Luxembourg’s Moselle region has a lot offer and wine packages are a great way to discover the region. They include walks through the vineyards and boat cruises on the river. Cycling tours with a rental bike along the river or through the wine slopes are yet another option. Sparkling Crémants, Luxembourg’s pendant to the French champagne is the poster child for the region. However, the region also produces elegant Rieslings, fruity Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, exotic Gewürztraminer, Rivaner, strong Pinot Noir and of course also the regional specialties Elbling and Auxerrois. Other local highlights include ice and straw wines. The choice of Luxembourgish wines is almost endless and hardly any other country boasts such a variety on such a small scale.

On 42 km, between Schengen and Wasserbillig, you can take in impressive river landscapes and idyllic winemaking villages with contemporary architecture. Modern cuisine and regional produce make for high-end culinary experiences. As “wine ambassadors”, numerous chefs have specialised in dishes made with Luxembourgish wines and some even offer cooking classes.

Luxembourg for Tourism

On the 15th and 16th March, under the slogan “Wine, Taste, Enjoy”, private vintners and winemakers organise free concerts, tastings and free visits of their vineyards. The cooperative winery in Wormeldange and Caves Bernard-Massard offer tours through their wine cellars and give visitors a glimpse of their highly technical production methods. In comparison, a visit to a private vintner highlights the relationship with this old tradition and shows a willingness to be innovative and creative. The wine museum in Ehnen gives an insight into almost everything related to wine cultivation, which has been developing in the region for thousands of years.

The quality label “AOP - Appellation d’origine protégée” guarantees high quality wines. A large number have also taken home awards from other countries. Choose from wine boutiques in Wormeldange and Remerschen or buy straight from vintners themselves. Whatever your choice, it is a great way to discover the taste of the region. Another charming way to explore the region is with a rental bike. You can either join a guided tour or simply cycle where you fancy and discover newly created cycling paths or older leisure paths along the Moselle River. Archaeological discoveries are scattered throughout the region and emphasize the presence of the Romans, who introduced the wine culture in the Grand Duchy.

Wine slopes, cellars, idyllic villages and towns can be explored with rental bikes or while on a hiking tour. The hiking paths, certified by the German Rambler Institute, lead to great panoramic plateaus, fields filled with fruit trees and impressive rocks in the middle of shaded forests. The abundance of fruit shows that alongside its ideal setting for winemaking, the Moselle region is also popular for its distilleries.

The village of Schwebsange is home to a yacht club and a Mediterranean garden. Yet, the most famous village in the region is the winemaking village of “Schengen”, situated in the tri-border area with France and Germany. The village is famous for the Schengen agreement, which abolished border controls. More than 25 countries are members of the Schengen zone. A memorial and a museum bear witness to this important agreement. From June until September, a “Tourist-Shuttle” connects the famous winemaking village to the European capital Luxembourg every Saturday (18.06. – 24.09.)
