A Space and Health Perspective

Projects that are built on key principles developed by WHO

My Story Defining Moments

The original concept was founded on my experiences caring for family and friends as they moved through the medical system.

We know first hand what it is like searching for

amenities in a strange town, or sleeping on a park bench waiting between doctor’s appointments, to name only a few concerns

Healthcare providers are not in the business or have the mandate to provide “home away from home” experiences - Private small businesses to lead the way

What does a day in the life of patients, family,

caregivers, and medical support staff look like ?

It can be a profound experience with personal

decisions, control, determination, with financial implications

8 Domains: Outdoor spaces and buildings, Transportation, Housing, Social participation, Respect and social inclusion, Civic participation and employment, Communication and information, and Community support and health services.

The most attractive measures for healthy, sustainable housing involve:

Insulation and thermal envelope; Heating and cooling systems; Improved ventilation; Solar energy (passive and photovoltaic); Efficient cooking and lighting technologies; Safer building materials; “Compact” urban planning of neighborhoods with easy

access to schools, commerce, transport – and green spaces;

Healthy home behaviours.

Apples to market one way Why you may say ? Well, the boxes and space are made only for apples today

What does hospitality, health and wealth mean to you? Easy access to services, open spaces, businesses, retail, adaptable, flexible, ROI on the spaces? What does green, and sustainable spaces look like to you? Such environments are rare, and add in “healthy” built spaces for home and office are even more rare. Often the connectivity between the sustainable and health is not clear and thus addressed, as always individually.

Our team sought to address how a space functions for short-term accommodations

How a home must adapt and change with the needs of the occupants, to meet an individual’s life cycle needs in home scenarios

How to mitigate and reduce the transmission of infection/bacteria.

Shifting from a traditional to more eco-healthy accommodations model to produce a healthy investment

A new way of looking at spaces that the base concepts are adaptable across a multitude of demographics and geographical locations.

We focused on the connectivity between healthy spaces and

sustainability platform. Integrating the two results in positive healthy impacts for

people to live and work in while respecting the environment and balance sheet.

Shifting societal demand and behavior in favour of more sustainable products and services and more retail outlets

As a society we now have a better

understanding of the impact that our homes and business spaces have on our wellbeing

We are starting to see a shift in investor sentiment with sustainable healthy real estate

No matter the “bull or bear” of the economy - people will always have a need for healthcare, health and wellness

(Gain from Investment – Cost from Investment) _________________________________________

Cost of Investment

• Focus on the person centric environment

• Not only monetary benefits • Social benefits • Environmental benefits

• Integrating Health into life and work has many co benefits

• From our experiences we found:

• Health professionals focus on built environments, walking, biking, etc

• City planners focus on the environment • Schools focus on environmental sciences • There are little or no “Co benefits” • Missing links can be found

Stakeholders

• Focusing on the right place, the right time and the right mix of social support structures

• Specific protocols that

proactively sought to focus on cross collaboration

• Creating a human centric environment; health, wealth, environment, investments,

• Why not engage the stakeholders?

Part of the ageing – life cycle in communities, not just families

There are more procedures, and choices in medical care than before.

Travelling from afar, over night or for weeks and months There logistics involved with basic and complex care

Nobody was addressing this niche market of short term stays and amenities

The Niche Market

Better together than apart

The WELL Building Standard® (WELL) is a performance-based system for measuring, certifying and monitoring features of the built environment that impact human health and well-being, through air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind

Participation in WELL pilot programs provides an opportunity for projects to engage at the cutting edge of the healthy building movement.

IWBI’s goal is to integrate feedback and lessons learned from pilot projects and industry experts to help inform future versions of the WELL Building Standard.

The Community for All Ages Plan is the first project under the Healthy City Strategy, a long- term, integrative plan that the City is building in partnership with Interior Health. The Community for All Ages Plan will aim to deliver on a vision “to create a city that is healthy, safe, active and inclusive for seniors, children and those with diverse abilities.” This important first step will help shape Kelowna over the coming years to meet the evolving needs of residents of all ages and abilities and will be the first step towards creating an overarching Healthy City Strategy for Kelowna.

• To provide comfortable

residence ,commercial medical space in a healthy building

• To create a space that allowed

for an environment that invited positivity and healing

• A working model addressing

the gap in hospitality, healthcare, community, wellness
