Welcome to the 2nd bi-annual Austin Vintage Style Festival a three-day vintage clothing tour (May 11-13th) that will include vintage dealers from all over, including local Austin shops and boutiques

spanning Congress, First Street, the Drag, and Burnet amongst other areas around Austin.

Thanks to our partners UWeekly Austin, Tito’s Vodka, Maine Root, 369 Austin, SLACKER Magazine, MyOwnAutopsyReport, Zico Water, KVRX, 101x, KLBJ, Zenify, Beanitos, and many more, we have once

again brought back the necessary recipe for awesome sauce we hope will keep being one of the biggest local vintage clothing festivals for years to come.

All attendees are encouraged to dress the part whether your thing is swing, rockabilly, mod, disco, pin-up, Hollywood glam, roaring 20’s, or if you just want to dress up and get an authentic makeover. Austin Vintage Style Festival is a collector’s dream and a fun creative tour for all ages.

This is a bi-annual event, which means six months from this Spring’s event we will have another one ready with a new season of vintage fashion (Fall/Winter) before the colleges end their semester. To provide the occasion with the good vibe feeling, we have also added a beneficiary to the event, The

Waller Creek Project. For more information go to www.wallercreek.org

This being the 2nd instalment r of what is sure to become one of Austin’s most anticipated style events, some key vintage players decided not to participate. We’re sure that the success of our 2nd go round of the Austin Vintage Style Fest and the overwhelming enthusiasm you, the festivalgoer, has expressed for this event will encourage those who hesitated this time around to participate in

next time. That being said, we feel strongly that this year’s exhibitors are the cream of the crop, and anticipate the festival growing to new heights with each instalment. This is just the beginning!

We encourage you to shop all independently owned vintage shops during the festival weekend, but the benefits of the wristband, which include storewide discounts and free treats from our

many wonderful sponsors, will only be available at participating locations. Not only do those who purchase a wristband get these perks, they are also (and more importantly) contributing to the

charitable organization The Waller Creek Project, which raises funds and awareness the upcoming development of Waller Creek in the heart of downtown Austin.

Amelia’s focuses on items and clothing dating from the mid-1800’s to the mid-1900’s. Well organized, well lit, and well edited, Amelia’s enjoys an ever expanding international reputation for the quality of it’s stock. Long used as a resource by designers with the film, theater and fashion industries, the shop has housewares, clothing and accessories that span America’s history.

The shop houses an especially large selection of hats, which are displayed to great affect throughout the store and frequently on the head of the owner! One former bedroom is devoted to bridal wear; jewelry and accessories fill an antique display case. 1900’s pieces, Edwardian and Victorian whites share space on an Art Deco floor stand.

The heart of the shop is the display case from the 1880’s filled with an ever changing selection of fabulous and unique jewelry, as well as some of the more incredible purses. Day wear, cocktail and evening gowns, separates, and suits, linens, and housewares surround this case, located in what was once the living and dining rooms.

Tucked in other nooks and crannies are little display cases; vintage lingerie, eyewear, cuff-links and exquisite evening bags share shelves with other one-of-a-kind treasures. Men’s wear has the better part of one of the former bedrooms. Classic styles as well as some of the more insane style moments of the last century wait for the sharp dressed man to find and wear them to acclaim. We seem to have particularly good luck finding tuxedos for grooms!

Metal, the smell of it just gets my gears rolling. I love vintage pieces that have a history. The saying “If walls could talk” is what I think of when I see an old piece of jewelry whether it is a bead, or a metal key, I love that it has a story. In 2005 I started creating one of a kind pieces under the name “Honeybee Creations”; and in 2010 I started incorporating dark metals combined with silver and color. The Steam Punk concept focuses on dark metals in combination with old pieces that were once used as a functioning piece, like a watch, key, button or pin. The designs I put into my jewelry include the original Steam Punk designs in correlation with silver and bright 70’s & 80’s inspired colors, that I have gathered from old earrings and buttons. In a market like Austin where trends and art is abundant, it is hard to set yourself aside from others. My pieces are all one of a kind and created with divine light and love. So my marker as an artist is to create that one piece for an individual that in turn becomes more than just a necklace, but a part of them that they will take with them on their journey. That is the ending point of what indulges me to keep creating one of a kind Steam Punk jewelry. As my saying goes “My art starts out with a heartbeat, and ends up on the sleeve of my arm”. And the beat goes on.

American Icon owner Jonathan Gaylon, originally from Kingston,Tennessee(the river foot hills of the Smokey Mountains), spent his childhood exploring his grandfather’s junk yard, going to yard sales, antique sales, and flea markets with his mother, an engineer and avid antique collector, and his uncles. For a while it was just a family activity. Around fifteen years old, he started playing baseball and developed an interest in collecting baseball cards and comic books, such as G.I. Joe and Conan the Barbarian, so since he had something to shop for, the trips became more interesting to him. To this day, he still owns his entire collection of comics and baseball cards. In middle school, he sported the popular Nike brand until his freshman year in high school when he went to his first Metallica concert and bought his first band shirt, which would be one of many. Influenced by bands such as Nirvana and Soundgarden, he soon began shopping for thrift clothing like pearl snap shirts and old trucker hats for his own wardrobe. He also developed a passion for collecting records. Two years ago, Jonathanwas working as a party boat captain and found himself bored in the three months that he had off a year. During his time off, he rediscovered his passion for thrift clothing and began searching for vintage band shirts among other things. He also sold his finds to local boutiques in Austin, unless they became part of his own private collection. After a while he started American Icon so he could sell merchandise. To stimulate his new business while stimulating other local vendors and friends, he started the 29th Street Yard Sale

www.s l a cke rmagaus t i n . com 13

at Spider House, which happens every second Sunday of the month. It has become one of the best shopping days for vintage enthusiasts. Jonathan believes in keeping things in-house and supporting locals, friends, bands, vintage dealers, and artists, which shows he is a true Austinite at heart (even though he’s only resided here for about 8 years). He loves Austin because it is one of the few places that musicians, artists, and independent vendors can thrive.Since he started doing the 29th Street Yard Sale, the event has developed into a way to cross promote with local Austin vendors who do not have a brick and mortar location. Jonathan looks at the yard sale as a way to make one global movement of creative culture energy of local entrepreneurs. It is also a way to keep vendors in touch with their merchandise while being inspired by other vendors and artists.May 13th will mark the one year anniversary of the 29th Street Yard Sale: Babes, Bands, Hunks and Jams! His promotional video for the yard sale will premiere at the event. Foreign Mothers and Dead Space will perform at the event at the back courtyard stage of Spider House. Gaylon also plans on starting his own record label American Icon Records (AIR), which will cover two local Austin bands every year. His first two bands to record will be Sweat Lodge and Teenage News.Mission Statement: American Icon/ Austin is not just a name, American Icon is a movement of CREATIVITY and Style.
