T HE series of races to be sailed off Los Angeles. California, this month, between March lOth and

18th, marks a new departure in yachting from which much good should come. For this is the first time that east and west coast yachts and yachtsmen have c<?me together in any considerable number, and the first time that eastern yachts of several different classes have ~een shipped to the west coast to race. Heretofore meetmgs between sailors of the two sections have been confined to individual crews or. boats, such as in the Star Class Inter­national Series. Not only does inter-sectional racing make for interesting sport, but much can be learned from such a meeting, and a broader viewpoint achieved.

The forthcoming meeting was brought about through the efforts of the North American Yacht Racing Union and several western yachtsmen of the Skippers' ~Jub, of Los Angeles. Among other things, the west coast '~111 have a chance to see the International Rule in operat1on. No Jess than three eastern "Sixes" have been sent west, to be sailed by some of the best eastern skippers. T<? meet these invaders the California yachtsmen have ~ullt ~ne new "Six" and purchased a number more, mcludmg, we Jearn, two of the best of the Scandinavian team tl~at trimmed us last September. These two ar~ th.e Swed1sh May Be, winner of the Gold Cup, an~ tile Fmn.1sh J~erw­neito. So in this class the hottest kmd of racmg wtll be seen. The "Sixes" are fast little boats in any kind of going and should make a good impression. on the coast. The eastern boats will be sailed by Cltfford D. Mallory, Henry B. Plant and Ralph Ellis.

In the R Class there is already a large and fine fleet on the west coast. The t~vo go_ing froll_l the cast in this class are the Live Yankee, whtch wtll be sat!ed by her owner, C. A. Welch, Jr., and the Puffin, Juntus S. Morgan- both boats being among the best in the east last season .

It is to be hoped that this meeting will be only the first of many between the twc;> .coasts. The m?re yachtsmen of one section see of cond1t1ons and boats tn other yacht­ing centers, the better.

The Motor Boat Show has come and gone! great Show while it lasted- and it lasted working days of twelve hours each. During days more people ,·isited the Grand Central studied the new boats, engines, and any previous exhibition of this character .. -\Dd that struck us most forcefully in watch ing the thronged the aisles was the fact that it was, more critical public than in previous years, wise" and educated in marine matters, and interested in what it saw.

Never were we more impressed by the fact boating is destined to make a big appeal to public; ne\'er did we feel more keenly that the the industry back of it, are facing a big futtrre. of its approach are as marked as are the heavy herald the approach of a storm at sea. never owned a boat before are turning to pleasure in large numbers. It reminded us, some of the early automobile shows, when motoring was being sold to the public, and "admission" was the prospective owner of a good boats such as those at the last show, gi'-ea engines within the means of those who want to and pleasure boating will become one of the forms of recreation in e\'ery locality where over 36 inches deep .

You may put this down as a prophecy, il 'vVe'll remind you of it a few years hence.
