In 1886 inspired by a speech by antiseptic advocate Joseph Lister, Robert Wood Johnson joined his brothers James Wood Johnson & Edward Mead Johnson to create a line of ready-to-use surgical dressing in 1885. The company produced its first products in 1886 & incorporated in 1887.

SCANDALS

2009-The recalls have centered on such well-known brands as Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl and Zyrtec, as well as children’s version of some of these products, which possibly contain metal particles and chemicals used to treat plywood.

2006- Research showed that up to two-thirds of prescriptions for Risperdal were for unapproved uses that had little or no scientific support. Worse yet, elderly dementia patients who were prescribed Risperdal for off-label uses were found to increase their chances of death by 54% within the first 12 weeks of taking it!

2013-The company’s pharmaceutical unit, Janssen, informed doctors and patients that it was recalling one lot of Risperdal Consta, an injectable antipsychotic treatment, after routine testing turned up evidence of mold.Johnson & Johnson also recalled 200,000 bottles of liquid Motrin for infants because they may contain tiny particles of plastic.

2014-The only hint that something is different inside millions of bottles of Johnson’s Baby Shampoo arriving on store shelves are two words: “Improved Formula.” The products no longer contain two potentially harmful chemicals, formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane, that have come under increasing scrutiny by consumers and environmental groups.

Johnson & Johnson loses its license in India due to an ordered case by the Food and Drug Administration after 15 batches of baby powder products were found sterilized by an irritant and cancer-causing component.Food and Drug Administration or FDA cancelled the license of Johnson & Johnson India to produce the product at their Mulund plant. The order will come to effect on June 24, 2013 and according to the FDA officials, ethylene oxide was found in 15 batches of baby powder produced which is labeled as carcinogenic and an irritant.
