The Master Slide

Page 6: A short presentation on power point

The Master Slide is used to create a uniform layout for the presentation; what appears on the master slide appears on every slide

It is particularly useful for creating a customised background

To create a master slide, go to view, master, slide master and enter the date and your name into the footer as well as other text or images

The Background

Either use one of the designs provided (format, slide design) or customise the background (format, background)

Click on the drop-down arrow and select ‘fill colours’ or ‘fill effects’

To make the background truly unique utilise the drawing tools at the bottom of the desktop

In the ‘fill effects’ section you can click on ‘picture’ and insert a picture from your ‘My Picture’ folder

To use the picture on every slide place it onto the master slide

The Layout

The ‘header and footer’ is found under view, ‘header and footer’ similar to Word

The slide layout which should be selected according to what the contents of the slide are going to be is found under format, slide layout

Make sure you spell-check your presentation (tools, spelling)

Font, alignment and line spacing are found as separate items under ‘format’

The date and time can be added to the slides similar to Word (insert, date and time)

If you intend to create identical slides, use insert, duplicate slide

Slide Transitions

Page 10: A short presentation on power point

Select a type and a transition speed When selecting sounds, make sure you bear your

audience in mind Next decide whether you want your slides to advance on

mouse click or automatically If you decide in favour of the latter option, make sure

you rehearse the timings (slideshow, rehearse timings) in order to ensure that your audience have got sufficient time to view each slide (having too much or too little time to view each slide will make your audience switch off)

Animations

Make sure you adapt the style of your presentation including animations to your audience (e.g. lots of ‘fun stuff’ for kids your age, less animations if you address an older or more formal audience)

When using animations, ask yourself: Do they look good, do they sound appealing and do they or don’t they distract from the message/content

As a general rule, aim for some form of uniformity (allow the text/images to come in from the same side, in the same way, etc.) in order not to distract from the content

Animations can either be taken from the menu (Slideshow, animation schemes)

Page 12: A short presentation on power point

or they can be customised (Slideshow, custom animation)

Page 14: A short presentation on power point

Select the text/image to be customised Click on ‘Add effect’ and choose from

entry/emphasis/exit/motion path You can now decide when to start it, which direction it

should take and how fast/slow it should appear Next click on the drop-down arrow next to what has

been animated and choose from timings and additional effects such as sounds
