Pastoral Introduction

Christians, like Tricia and Allan, believe that God’s love and power extend over all creation. Every life, including our own, is precious to God, and the Christian faith is that there is always hope, in death as in life. But even those who share such faith find that there is a real sense of loss at the death of a loved one. As we gather in this second service to give thanks for Tricia’s life, following on from Allan’s service, we can use the time to express our faith, or lack of it, acknowledge our feelings of loss and sorrow as we say farewell, and re-flect on our own mortality. Those who mourn need support and consola-tion. Our presence here today, whether in person or listening is part of that continuing support for all Tricia’s family and friends.

Opening Prayers

Hymn Brightest and Best Reginald Heber, 1783-1826

1. Brightest and best of the sons of the morning dawn on our darkness, and lend us your aid: star of the east, the horizon adorning, guide where your infant redeemer is laid. 2. Cold on his cradle the dewdrops are shining, low lies his head with the beasts of the stall; angels adore him in slumber reclining, maker, and monarch, and saviour of all. 3. Say, shall we yield him in costly devotion odours of Edom and offerings divine? Gems of the mountain and pearls of the ocean, myrrh from the forest or gems from the mine? 4. Vainly we offer each ample oblation, vainly with gifts would his favour secure; richer by far is the heart's adoration, dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

What is Dying? by Bishop Brent—read by Harri

A ship sails and I stand watching till she fades on the horizon and someone at my side says, “She is gone”. Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all; she is just as large as when I saw her. The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her, and just at the moment when someone at my side says “She is gone”, there are others who are watching her coming,

and other voices take up a glad shout,

“There she comes!”

And that is dying.

Bible Reading John 14.1-7 read by Alison Head Jesus said, ‘Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe a so in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.’ Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we don’t know where you’re going. How can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.’ Address Helen Harding Time for Reflection and personal memories Music—”Sarabande” Cello Suite No 2 in D minor J S Bach played by Toby on Tricia’s cello Prayers, including the Lord’s Prayer Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive them that trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
