Annunciation

Salvation to all that will is nigh; That All, which always is all everywhere,

Which cannot sin, and yet all sins must bear, Which cannot die, yet cannot choose but die,

Lo, faithful virgin, yields Himself to lie In prison, in thy womb; and though He there

Can take no sin, nor thou give, yet He will wear, Taken from thence, flesh, which death's force may try.

Ere by the spheres time was created, thou Wast in His mind, who is thy Son and Brother;

Whom thou conceivst, conceived; yea thou art now Thy Maker's maker, and thy Father's mother;

Thou hast light in dark, and shutst in little room, Immensity cloistered in thy dear womb.

By John Donne (1572-1631) From La Corona (c. 1607)

The flowers in the chancel are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Michaele Ann Price, sister of Jo Johnson-Meineke.

Despite its roots in centuries-old liturgical sources, the lessons and carols service is a relatively new addition to the canon of Christian worship liturgy, but one that has already found its way into traditions across multiple denominations. The first Service of Nine Lessons and Carols was held in the chapel of King's College of Cambridge University, about sixty miles north of London, on Christmas Eve 1918. The service was planned by the school’s dean, Eric Milner-White, who sought to bring more "imaginative worship" into the Church of England in the post-war era; White based the service on a similar format used three decades before at the church in Truro by E.W. Benson (who later became Archbishop of Canterbury). The BBC began broadcasting the service in 1928; every Christmas Eve since, millions of people across the world are touched by the scriptural readings and carols from this service.

As the service grew in popularity, an increasing number of English and American choirs began to program services modeled after the one at King's College, and a Service of Advent Lessons and Carols featuring seven rather than nine readings began to take root. The typical format of the service begins with the choir processional on the great hymn "Once in Royal David's City.” After each of seven scripture readings from a different member of the congregation, the choir sings one or two carols, intermixed with additional congregational hymns.

The carols this year have been selected to highlight the many connections between the prophecies and stories of the coming of Christ with the notion of preparation. In addition to offerings of traditional carols and early music, the choir will also be singing works by living composers that set to music devotional poetry dating back to the Middle Ages. Fresh treatments of old materials are certainly not a novelty in the Christian experience, but rather serve as examples of the relevancy even of age-old tradition and our communion with those who founded and propelled it. Because the texts of these carols are so poignant, telling individual stories themselves, we have printed them in this morning’s order of worship for you to follow as you please.

We pray that you will take from this service a message of hope, of joy, of love, and of promises fulfilled as we are reminded again through the Advent liturgy of the great story of our shared faith: “And our eyes at last shall see him…”

-The FPC Chamber Chorale Matthew Bishop, Director of Music

THE BIDDING PRAYER Rev. Mark Galbraith THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,

CAROL Prepare the Way, O Zion Swedish carol, BEREDEN VÄG FÖR HERRAN Melody from Then Swenska Psalmboken (1697) Text: Frans Michael Franzén (1772-1847), trans. Augustus Nelson (1958) Arr. Robert Lau (b. 1943)

Prepare the way, O Zion, your Christ is drawing near!

Let every hill and valley a level way appear.

Greet one who comes in glory, foretold in sacred story, O blest is Christ that came in God’s most holy name.

He brings God’s rule, O Zion; he comes from heaven above. His rule is peace and freedom,

justice, truth, and love. Lift high your praise resounding,

for grace and joy abounding, O blest is Christ that came in God’s most holy name.

Fling wide your gates, O Zion; your Savior’s rule embrace.

His tidings of salvation proclaim in every place.

All lands will bow before him, their voices will adore him.

O blest is Christ that came in God’s most holy name.

FIRST LESSON Louise Hales Isaiah 40:1-8. To God’s people in exile in a faraway land, the prophet Isaiah announces good

news: God is coming back, and is bringing the exiles home!

CAROL Thou Visitest the Earth By Maurice Greene (1696-1755) Text: Psalm 65:9 & 12

Thou visitest the earth, and blessest it: and crownest the year with Thy goodness.

SECOND LESSON Pam Paulsen Jeremiah 23:5-6. The prophet Jeremiah offers hope for a righteous branch, a just king who is yet to

come.

CAROL This Is the Truth Sent from Above English Carol, Herefordshire

Arr. Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)

This is the truth sent from above, the truth of God, the God of love;

therefore don’t turn me from the door; but hearken all both rich and poor.

The first thing that I will relate, that God at first did man create; the next thing which to you I tell

woman was made with man to dwell.

Thus we were heirs to endless woes till God the Lord did interpose; and so a promise soon did run: that he’d redeem us by his Son.

And at this season of the year our blest redeemer did appear,

and here did live, and here did preach, and many thousands he did teach.

Thus he in love to us behaved, to show us how we must be saved; and if you want to know the way, be pleased to hear what he did say.

THIRD LESSON Kate Hickenbottom Zechariah 9:9-10. To a nation of war and weapons, God promises a king who will establish a reign

of peace.

CAROL Veiled in Darkness By Glenn L. Rudolph (b. 1951) Text: Douglas Letel Rights

Veiled in darkness Judah lay, waiting for the promised day,

while across the shadowy night streamed a flood of glorious light,

heavenly voices chanting then, ‘Peace on earth, goodwill to men.’

Still the earth in darkness lies, up from death’s dark vale arise

voices of a world in grief, prayers of men who seek relief; now our darkness pierce again, ‘Peace on earth, goodwill to men.’

Light of light, we humbly pray, shine upon Thy world today;

break the gloom of our dark night, fill our souls with love and light,

send thy blessed word again, ‘Peace on earth, goodwill to men.’

FOURTH LESSON Barb Ehrmann Haggai 2:6-9. The prophet Haggai promises to God’s people a temple even more glorious than

the temple of old.

CAROL Rune Carol By Johan Hugosson (2015) Text: Medieval Rune poems, trans. Hannah Burrows

Ice is a floor made by frost; it glistens like glass, and glitters like gems.

Sleet is the weeping of clouds; but the reindeer runs on over stiff-frozen snow.

Hail is the whitest of wheat, hurled by the heavens, and whirled by the wind.

Birch has the leaf greens limbs; with beautiful branches, it strives for the sky.

Yew is the wintergreen wood, sturdy and steadfast, elation of earth.

Star is the glorious guide, it keeps to its course, constant to kings.

Sun is the light of the lands, halo of heaven, and sorrow of snow.

Day is a glorious gift, pleasure of people and heavenly hope.

Page 9: A Service of Advent Lessons and CarolsA Service of Advent Lessons and Carols First Presbyterian Church Davenport, Iowa Half past nine o’clock in the morning, December 8, 2019 The

FIFTH LESSON Harry Hoyt Isaiah 35:1-6. The prophet Isaiah announces the renewal both of the land and of God’s people

on the coming day of redemption.

CAROL On Jordan’s Bank English hymn, WINCHESTER NEW Text: Charles Coffin (1676-1718), trans. John Chandler (1837) Arr. by Malcolm Archer (b. 1952)

On Jordan’s bank the Baptist’s cry announces that the Lord is nigh; awake and hearken, for he brings

glad tidings from the King of kings!

Then cleansed be every Christian breast, and furnished for so great a guest! Yea, let us each our heart prepare

for Christ to come and enter there.

For thou art our salvation, Lord, our refuge, and our great reward; without thy grace we waste away

like flowers that wither and decay.

All praise, eternal Son, to thee whose advent sets thy people free, whom, with the Father, we adore,

and Holy Ghost for evermore.

SIXTH LESSON Rev. Pat Halverson Luke 1:26-35, 38. The angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will give birth to a ruler

whose reign shall never end.

CAROL There Is No Rose of Such Virtue By Matt Bishop (b. 1988) - Premiere Text: Anonymous, 15th-century English

There is no rose of such virtue as is the rose that bare Jesu;

Alleluia.

For in this rose contained was, heaven and earth in little space;

Res miranda. 1

By that rose we may well see that he is God in persons three;

Pari forma. 2

The angels sungen, the shepherds too: Gloria in excess Deo;

Gaudeamus. 3

Now leave we all this worldly mirth, and follow we this joyful birth;

Transeamus. 4

Res miranda - Wonderful thing (Latin).1

Pari forma - Equal in form (Latin).2

Gaudeamus - Let us rejoice (Latin).3

Transeamus - Let us follow (Latin).4

*HYMN My Soul Gives Glory to My God MORNING SONG

SEVENTH LESSON Don Wood Mark 1:1-15. Jesus proclaims the coming of the kingdom of God.

CAROL Come, Thou Redeemer of the Earth German melody, PUER NOBIS NASCITUR

Text: St. Ambrose (c. 340-397), trans. John Mason Neale (1818-1866)

Come, thou Redeemer of the earth, and manifest thy virgin-birth;

let every age adoring fall, such birth befits the God of all.

Begotten of no human will, but of the Spirit, thou art still

the Word of God, in flesh arrayed, The Saviour, now to man displayed.

Forth from the chamber goeth he, that royal home of purity,

a giant in twofold substance one, rejoicing now his course to run.

Thy cradle here shall glitter bright, and darknesss glow with newborn light,

no more shall night extinguish day, where love’s bright beams their power display.

O equal to thy Father, thou! Gird on thy fleshly mantle now, the weakness of our mortal state

with deathless might invigorate. Amen.
