• Most people have disbelieves about computers
• There are a lot of fairy tales about software and hardware
•Most people memorize the moves needed to accomplish tasks
•Example : Checking online emails
•Most people refuse to understand computers when they face challenges.
Why do we need security?
• It is the year 2003
• New technologies are emerging fast
• New generations are coming up
• New services are available

• Old generation

• Office Suite (etc…)
• Basic Internet– Newspapers– Specific sites
How new generations uses PC’s
• Typing
• Coding
• Games
• Advanced internet– Many sites– Harmful sites
What are the danger to PC’s

• The cost of a PC for an old user is about $100.
• The cost of a PC for a new generation user is about $1000
• User facts apply to both users
What to do?
• Identify critical data
• Identify threats
• Identify response
• Identify solution plan
• Identify backup plan
• Always think worse case scenerio
How to be prepared
• 2 computers– 1 Main computer $1000– 1Backup computer $100– CD-RW drive $100– Norton Ghost $50– Norton AV $50
• Made a ghost image of the main computer after loading OS
•Made a ghost image of the backup computer after loading the OS
•Setup Norton AV in Main PC
•Setup Norton AV in Backup PC
•Main PC is connected to cable modem 24/7
•Backup PC is connected to the internet using wireless internet.
•Main PC is used for games, surfing, downloading, coding, online email
•Backup PC is used for local email(*), office suit(etc…) , online banking,betting, etc…
•Normal times Backup PC is not connected to internet
•Any important files created is always backed up on both main pc and backup pc.
•Both machines are isolated from electrical surges
•Critical Data
•Covered by backups on floppys
•Bigger data covered by CD’s
•Threats
•Hackers : No data to be found on Main Pc
•Trojans : No useful information on Main Pc
•Virus : Norton AV. If not recognized will effect files except backups. Floppies are pretty cheap so daily backup prevent serious infections.

•On suspecious behavior, disconnect and check for activity.

•Do a backup from a date known to be safe
•Remove virus from files
•Remove infectious files
•Apply fixes
