TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 34As the 1960s rolled over the far blue horizon, G. Ramanathan

continued to be active as earlier, addingto his formidable reputationas a Tamil Movie Music Charmer. He scored music for three films in1961, those being ‘Sri Valli’, ‘Arasilankumari and‘KappalottiyaThamizhan’.

‘Sri Valli’ was remade this year and in Gevacolor by T. R. Ramannaand, somewhat ironically, T. R. Mahalingam (who had become a starin the1940s version of ‘Sri Valli’ made by AV. Meiyappan, a super hitin which he had played Lord Muruga) was cast as Sage Narada, whichhad been played in the earlier version by musician and actor NagercoilK. Mahadevan.

Sivaji Ganesan who played Muruga appeared rather bulky and notso young (he was in his thirties then). Many of the songs in the 1940sversion had become so popular that they were adapted in this film tooby G. Ramanathan.

To support the box office, Ramanna introduced a titillating songand dance sequence by the famed Bombay dancer Helen, dancing fora song about Narikuravas but that did not help the film’s success,though it was quite interesting to watch as an ‘item number’!

Chandrababu played the role of Valli’s clowning brother, which hadbeen playedin the earlier version by the ace comedy star T. R.Ramachandran.

In spite of Gevacolor and pleasing music by G. Ramanathan, the filmdid not fare well at the box-office. Moviegoers remembered the 1940sversion which was deeply embedded in their souls and minds, andthey found it difficult to appreciate the 1960s version. The noted Tamilweekly Kumudham in its review printed on the entire page only twowords reading ‘OM MURUGAA!’

Another film of 1961 with G. Ramanathan composing the music was‘Arasilankumari’ which was an adaptation of a successful Hollywoodfilm ‘Scaramouche’ based on the novel of the same title by the popularwriter of romantic period and high seas adventure novels, RafaelSabatini. The English version featuring the top Hollywood starsStewart Granger and Mel Ferrer, along with noted star and beautyEleanor Parker, was a big hit and had a successful run even in Madrasand other places in India. Expectedly, Tamil film producers wereinterested in remaking it. The college professor turned screenwriter andfilmmaker A. S. A. Sami adapted the story in Tamil as ‘Arasilankumari‘

The film had M. G. Ramachandran as the hero and he was pairedwith the attractive actress and star Rajasulochana as the heroine. Topstar Padmini played his sister who falls in love and marries a soldier(Nambiar) who has ulterior motives in marrying her.Nagendra Raoalso played a major role in the movie.

Sadly, the film was long in production for several reasons, mostlybecause of differences between the dominating hero MGR and thedirector. Soon Sami opted out and the editor-director A. Kasilingamtook over and completed the film. Mu. Karunanidhi wrote thedialogues. Later Rajasulochana told this writer that Mu. Ka. used tobe present on the sets coaching her andPadmini to ensure that bothdelivered their lines with much impact.

G. Ramanathan’s music played a major role in this film and manyof its songs became popular with a big hit‘Chinna payale chinna payaleseithi keladaa’ which had been filmed on MGR as a lullaby, loadedwith his favorite messages and lessons on how to play a useful rolein society. Expectedly the song had political tags with a meaningfullyric(A. Marudhakasi), and the manner in which it was rendered byT. M. Soundararajanmade the song very popular.

Another song filmed on Rajasulochana ‘Tara Tara vandharaa….’(voice Jikki) also became popular, especially among women.

The third film in 1961 for G. Ramanathan, ‘Kappalottiya Thamizhan’was based on Va.Vu. Chidambaram Pillai’s biography written by Ma.Po. Si. Popularly known as VOC (or Vaa.Oo. Si), Pillai had foundedthe Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company to break the British monopolyon maritime trade. The film won the Best Feature Film (Tamil) at theNational Film Awards, but it flopped at the box-office.

Sivaji Ganesan played the role of the patriot in his flamboyant styleand some critics commented that people saw only the actor Sivaji andnot the patriot VOC. Gemini Ganesan played Madasamy, andSavithri his wife. S.V. Subbaiah played Subramania Bharathi; Asokanplayed the white sub-collector Ashewho is assassinated byVanchinathan (Balajee) on a train at the Maniyachi junction. T.K.Shanmugam played Subramania Siva, a close associate ofChidambaram Pillaiand V. Nagaiah played the lawyer and father ofPillai.

The film had some fine music, with nine songs by SubramaniaBharathi taken from his poetic output: ‘Endru thaniyum inthasuthandhira dhaagam’ (Tiruchi Loganathan), ‘Chinna kuzhandhaigal’(P. Susheela), ‘Kaatru veliyidai Kannamma’ (P.B. Sreenivas and P.Susheela), ‘Nenjil’ (Sirgazhi Govindarajan), ‘Odi vilaiyaadu Paapa’(Sirgazhi Govindarajan, Jamuna Rani and Rohini), ‘Parukulley nallanaadu’ (Sirgazhi Govindarajan), ‘Thanneer vitto valarthom’ (TiruchiLoganathan), ‘Vande Matharam enbom’ (Sirgazhi Govindarajan),and ‘Velli panimalai’ (Sirgazhi Govindarajan, Tiruchi Loganathan,L.R. Eswari and Rohini). G. Ramanathan composed all the melodioustunes that soon became popular.

In real life, after VOC retired from his legal practice, he settled downin Perambur in Madras, and went virtually unnoticed as he wanderedthe streets of that crowded area. To eke out a living, he was forced tosell his law books and start a grocery shop. His grandson, reduced topoverty, later worked as an office boy in some company. Even today,some people putting up ads in the press celebrate VOC’s birthday butnobody bothers in any real manner. His son, who used to work for theAmerican Consulate, had caustic comments to make about politiciansand others, about how they exploited his father and his reputation,but never bothered to help him when he was down and out in his laterlife. G. Gunavathy and her 13-year-olddaughter G. Sanchi (residents of EthirajNagar, West Mambalam) won the trea-sure hunt contest ‘Khuljaye Bachpan’organised by Kellogg’s in Mumbai on July4. She said that their names were amongthe 25 pairs chosen from more than 1000entries.

Gunavathy said that apart from thetreasure hunt contest, visits wereorganised to an aquarium, museum andplanetarium and fun events like magicshow, puppet show and a special musicalshow were also held.

Sanchi is a Std. 8 student of ChettinadVidyasharam.
