A Arnprior DUPLICATE BRIDGE CLUB F F F F In university I did not play Bridge at lunch hour as many others did, but went to mass at noon. Many years later, I started duplicate without having a clue about how to play. I do not have a Bridge brain and regret running away in tears from those preschool Bridge games. Also Bridge with the gang at school would have been a lot more fun than mass. My thoughts on Bridge; 1. Something old people do. 2. Colossal waste of time. 3. Fear and terror. 4. Stupidity. 5. School of hard knocks. 6. Imposter, just by showing up. 7. Slacking off from other activities. 8. Sheer amazement when I actually do get points or fractions thereof. 9. Finding new ways to tick off partner each time out. 10. New friendships. 11. Thankful for kind, patient partners. I’m very happy and proud to be a member of two friendly clubs and can play virtually every day of the week. Bob & Judy Ripley We are Life Masters so obviously we enjoy the competitive aspects. But mainly we play because we love the game. It's something we can do together and we like Bridge people a lot. Kate Ray Challenging, engaging, frustrating, stimulating, social interaction. Iris Winston Camaraderie, Communication. Competition. Wisdom. Wild bids. Whining. I might make it to become a Life Master before I die. Estelle Grenier Bridge is addictive. It’s fun, it’s frustration and it’s socializing with so many wonderful people, and learning from the Director that going down one is good Bridge but going down three is really, really bad. Linda Buttle Apart from the obvious intellectual stimulation, I watched Bridge provide my 75 year old mother with a community of friends when she moved here knowing no one, and I have experienced the same sort of thing. Over the past 15 or so years I have added a whole new group of wonderful, supportive friends that enrich my life immeasurably. It is the greatest! Lorna Hooper Challenging, unpredictable, and frustrating. Through Bridge, I get a chance to meet new, interesting people and learn to control my disappointments. Lewis MacDonald I play because I love it. It’s competitive. It’s great for establishing humility. No matter how good you think you are, every hand shows you how good you are not. Kathy & Lawrie Daub Challenging, involving, requiring concentration. For us, it’s a line of contact with other people, a reason to laugh. It’s entertainment and an activity to keep our brains working. Mike Nagrodski I enjoy the mental stimulation. It’s competitive. Bill Buttle I would describe Bridge as unfailingly intriguing. It is so complex that nobody can ever reach a plateau where there’s nothing left to learn or where silly mistakes stop happening. It keeps you humble, and that’s good for all of us! I can’t imagine what my life would be like without Bridge—infinitely less stimulating, infinitely less amusing, infinitely lonelier, infinitely duller......I could go on....... Eleanor Sandberg The time goes so fast. I could play Bridge forever. When I’m playing Bridge I don't think of anything else. I forget the headache, the stress. It doesn't matter if I win or lose¬—it’s just the sheer pleasure of playing. Coral Neumann Bridge is a challenge. I play for fun, for companionship, and for mental exercise. It's my favorite hobby. Dan Baran Bridge has extraordinary appeal because, at its heart, it's a quest for perfection—the perfect partner, the perfect bid, the perfect contract, the perfect play. Walter Sandberg The social aspect is pretty important. When you get to be our age, you have to make the effort to get up and get out and do things. Bridge gives us that. Life becomes more pleasant and our health is better too. Marcel Marsan I’m 75 this year and Bridge keeps my marbles rolling around. Geoff Calvert I play for pleasure but it’s the challenge that makes it a pleasure. It is all about challenging myself. To always achieve the best I can be. Jeannie Yagminas I like meeting people. I like the competition. It gets me out of the house. But mostly it’s the people. If I weren’t meeting so many people, it wouldn’t be nearly so fun. Oh, yes…and it keeps me poor. Elgin Duke Pure and simple…it’s a pleasurable pastime. Working for the Life Master was fun. But once you have it, what the hell do you come out for? Because it’s pleasurable. Eleanor Thompson Why do I play Bridge? Brain exercise. It’s entertainment. Competitive. I enjoy it. Eileen Wallis When I quit work I needed something to make me think. One of my friends was playing Bridge and she said “I hate this game! It’s just fiddling with little boxes and calling ’Director! Director!’ all the time” but I just love it! Jeri Lunney It’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s frustration and it’s a chance to socialize while keeping my brain active. It’s my favourite pastime apart from my genealogy research. I wish it helped me lose weight! Pat Hohs Fun, challenging, friendship. A sense of achievement. An afternoon/ night out with friends. Bev Kobus It keeps my little gray cells ticking. I like the challenge plus I like the people…if they’re nice to me…even when I go down 4. Suzanne Caldwell When I tackle something, I like to be the best I can be. Nothing half-assed. I'm a bit competitive. Competitive with myself. Bridge is challenging for me because it's not easy. I have to work at it. Leo Coulas I love the competition and the enjoyment and besides, I’m over 60 points! Bob McLean I enjoy the intellectual aspect. Also, it keeps me out of the pub for three hours. Mac & Gillian Wilson We like the sociability. We’re just trying to ward off Alzheimers. Sit around and be couch potatoes? No thank you. George Caldwell This game is maddeningly addictive. It’s fun and I figure it keeps the brain active. I do get mad when I trump my winners. Kathy Daub I woke up this morning and realized that I had forgotten the most important word in my Bridge list: FRIENDS! Margaret Benson I play because I love it…most of the time. Elaine Pritchard I like the brain stimulation and I enjoy the various people—the camaraderie of Bridge. Marlene Geddes My life is extremely stressful and Bridge is my salvation. It is my time to socialize. I just love it! Phillippa Baran Sometimes I look around this Bridge Club and I am just overwhelmed with love and affection for all the people. And sometimes, I just want to tear my hair out and scream obscenities at myself and burst into tears and die. I love this game. Carl Hendrickson I get pleasure from the game. And friendship. I don’t snack. Sylvia Zembower I’m a very competitive person. For me it’s the challenge and the relaxation. A lot of Bridge players—it causes their blood pressure to go down—although mine went up last week. Sue Phillips It’s the same as golf. Whether I’m throwing a card or hitting a ball, I can’t think of anything else. It’s a stress reducer. What is there not to like about Bridge? Steve Gray The game is enjoyable. The people. It keeps the brain sharp. Bob McCook I like the incredibly high stress level. Marny McCook We had made plans to get together at friends’ cottage on July 13th. However, when we heard about the barbeque and Bridge we decided to make an excuse and change the date with our friends (which we did). So...Bridge has even forced me to lie! What we will do to be challenged, encouraged and discouraged by Duplicate! Especially because we were not planning to like, or to continue to play, Duplicate. Dave & Carol Sulpher Bridge is challenging, addictive and provides an adrenaline rush. A great way to make new friends. creative problem solving, and an endless learning experience. Our Club is welcoming, affirming, open to all ideas and provides shared leadership par excellence. Everyone contributes and culinary delights abound. Mary McCann Challenging, stimulating, social! It helps to give my brain a workout! Bridge means favourably using the gifts given to me to be the best that I can be! Wayne Daze Bridge is a lot of things. If I’m playing the hand and I find the only way to make a contract, I feel excited. I’m happy that I did something no one else figured out. If I am teaching people and they go out and have a beautiful game, I feel proud and I’m happy because I know I did something right. If anyone has a 70% game or something I’m very happy for them. It’s not all about me. Lorne Gutz Competition, socializing, and entertainment. Bridge is a few hours of mental exercise and challenges, in the company of good friends. Sharon & Tom Sewter Confidence building. Confidence destroying. Fun. Friendship with very interesting people. An opportunity to keep the mind working. Cookies and snacks. Doug Younger-Lewis Bridge is a challenge to me and my partner to do our best with the information and the skills we have. It’s a test of skill and it’s a learning curve. Al Lunney It’s an opportunity to spend a challenging, fun evening. Bob Bouchard It parallels life. Trying to observe the clues. Having fun. Fran & Al Caouette The game of bridge is very, very challenging. We like the socializing and the mental challenge. Randi & Eystein Huus Exhilarating, good, and sometimes infuriating. For us, it’s brain exercise and friendships. Pamela Deacon I enjoy the challenges of Bridge. I like that one can improve through play, and through reading and yet situations often arise in bidding or play when the best approach isn’t obvious and judgement is important. For me, bridge is a pleasant way to relax and enjoy leisure time, and I enjoy the human interaction. Of course it’s addictive, fun, frustrating. Joni Fine I love Bridge! Bridge is exasperating and it’s humbling. It’s like knocking my head against a wall sometimes but I like the challenge. Gord McArthur It’s fun. It’s a challenge. You live longer. I hear there are people who are 100 years old and are still playing. Gail Gamble I love Bridge. The people are friendly. I play because it gives me the opportunity to play with my regular partner who is a very good player. We get a chance to hone our skills so that we can play in tournaments. Shai Hall What do I get out of Bridge? Frustration. I get frustration. I enjoy the social aspect. It’s the only thing I go out for during the week. Nancy Cavanagh I enjoy it. It's fun. I guess I have a thing for numbers. I look for numbers and patterns all the time. Plus it gets me out of the house. Jane Johnston The best card game. I hope it keeps my mind thinking, plus I have met some great people. Jim & Gloria Wilson A great way to enjoy company with friends. Reg Gatenby What do I get out of Bridge? Fun. Nice people. Some thoughts on Playing Bridge...

Sheila DukeMany years ago, when I was a wee lass, my stay-at-home mother would be so desperate for entertainment that she would corral me and my two younger brothers into a foursome. She always arranged it so that one of us would be the dummy and she could play every hand. We would be insulted and run away in tears. End of game.
