The Editions of Dorothy Richardson's 'Pilgrimage' :A Comparison of Text

by GEORGE H. THOMSON

George H. Thomson’s The Editions of Dorothy Richardson’s 'Pilgrimage': A Comparison of Texts begins with an introduction defining methods and goals. The six following chapters set out in table format the many variants identified by comparing the different editions of the Pilgrimage texts. The 1938 Collected Edition of Pilgrimage, reprinted in 1967 with March Moonlight added, was revised and proofread by Dorothy Richardson herself. Is the revised text reliable? How does it compare with the texts of the English First Editions, ten of them issued by Duckworth between 1915 and 1931 and one by Dent in 1935?

These questions are answered in Chapters I through IV of this study, corresponding to Volumes I through IV of the Collected Edition of Pilgrimage. And further, how do the English First Editions of the first six novels, from Pointed Roofs to Deadlock, compare with the reset texts published by Knopf in New York between 1919 and 1921? And which of these first editions serve as copy text for the Collected Edition? These questions are answered in Chapter V.

Finally, what may be learned by comparing the periodical version of Interim in the Little Review with the significantly revised text of the English First Edition? The answer is offered in Chapter VI: so great are the changes, it is as though for this one time we are allowed to glimpse in the Little Review a Richardson MS in an earlier state of development.

The Editions of Dorothy Richardson’s 'Pilgrimage': A Comparison of Texts is the first detailed examination of Richardson’s Pilgrimage texts. It completes Professor Thomson’s reading of Dorothy Richardson, begun in A Reader’s Guide to Dorothy Richardson’s "Pilgrimage" (ELT Press, 1996), and continued in Notes on 'Pilgrimage': Dorothy Richardson Annotated (ELT Press 1999). Taken together these three books enable readers to understand Richardson as a key figure of the modernist movement and to appreciate Pilgrimage as one of British literature's most challenging, most rewarding, most underestimated masterpieces.

Chapter I: Pilgrimage Volume I I The Collected Editions (CE) and the English First Editions (E) Compared

Pointed Roofs

CE: Volume I, Book 1, 1938 / 1967 E: London: Duckworth, 1915 Quotation marks for dialogue, and for sayings: ' . . . ' in CE " . . . " in Pointed Roofs 1915

Titles of books, journals, music, etc.: Italics in CE " . . . " in Pointed Roofs 1915

Publishing house rules: Mr, Mrs etc. in CE Mr., Mrs. etc. in Pointed Roofs 1915

Foreign words and phrases: See NOTE below

Misprints and errors are indicated by an asterisk*

NOTE Foreign Words and Phrases: Because both German and French are spoken along with English at the school in Hanover, these languages --contrary to Richardson's general practice in Pilgrimage--are not usually italicized in either edition of Pointed Roofs. Exceptions, as when a foreign word or phrase is isolated within an English sentence, are noted only when the two texts differ in practice.

SUMMARY OF VARIANTS

Of 743 variants, 291 represent insertion of a comma and 43 substitute saal for saal. There are 96 substantive variants, 25 being differences in: chapter number (9), section breaks (5), punctuation (5), spelling (1), number (2), and tense (3).

In 20 instances CE deletes one or more words from E. These include the title PILGRIMAGE / PART 1. POINTED ROOFS; a whole sentence about Pastor Lahmann giving a French lesson (CE106.0-1; E167.7-8); and a more interesting sentence about Miriam's previous experience with hair washing: water. In full | water. Miriam's hair had never been washed with anything but cantharides and rose-water on a tiny special sponge. ¶In full (CE60.20-21; E84.5-9). The rest of the deletions are rather routine: her hands | her large hands (CE22.35; E15.16). On 5 occasions, one or more words is added to CE, none noteworthy.

Finally there are 25 examples of words being changed, from her candle | the candle (CE109.34; E174.13) to girls sitting opposite | girls opposite to her (CE38.18; E43.11). CE also substitutes the title Wings and Stings for "John Halifax" (CE22.31; E15.11-12).

There are 4 misprints in CE, of which two may be noted: Once if had for the correct Once it had (CE146.30; E241.1); and old and green for gold and green (CE152.24;E 251.24). Of 17 notable misprints and errors in E, the most interesting are: the Bergmann sisters identified not as Emma and Clara but as Emma and Marie (CE76.17; E113.4), and Pastor Lahmann's mannishness mistaken in E for mannerishness (CE127.34; E206.1). (Keep in mind that the full catalogue of

variants records an additional 15 misprints in E, entailing minor deviations in punctuation, capitalization, accents and so forth.)

In sum, then, Richardson's revisions to the Collected Edition text of Pointed Roofs are slight, though there were more than the usual number of misprints in E to be corrected.

Substantive variants are marked >

Chapter I: Pilgrimage Volume I I The Collected Editions (CE) and the English First Editions (E) Compared

Backwater

CE: Volume I, Book 2, 1938 / 1967 E: London: Duckworth, 1916 Quotation marks for dialogue, and for sayings: ' . . . ' in CE " . . . " in Backwater 1916

Titles of books, journals, music, etc.: Italics in CE " . . . " in Backwater 1916

Publishing house rules: Mr, Mrs etc. in CE Mr., Mrs. etc. in Backwater 1916

Foreign words and phrases: Italics in CE Italics in Backwater 1916

Misprints and errors are indicated by an asterisk*

NOTE Backwater, unlike other first editions, normally uses single quotation marks for Miriam's explicit thoughts and for quoted words within a reflection. Though verbally the text is identical to CE, all such instances are noted in this catalogue and are marked thus: †.

SUMMARY OF VARIANTS

Of 586 variants, 217 represent commas inserted in CE and 45 mark changes in hyphenation. Of 91 substantive variants, 18 note section breaks not included in CE, 6 record changes in punctuation, including 2 italics, and 1 a difference in spelling.

In 14 instances CE deletes words found in E, including the title of the novel on the opening page of the text (CE189; E1); most are quite minor, except for a glance | a terrified glance (CE217.2; E52.9-10). In 3 instances a word or phase is added to CE: for example, strange remote rooms | strange rooms (CE269.27; E146.24-147.1).

There are 41 exchanges of words, many of them minor like the Beethoven | that Beethoven (CE204.22; E30.12), and oddities of spelling pointing to peculiarities of pronunciation: surely | sheerly (CE242.8; E97.25). Among the most interesting changes are: leisurely walk | flat-footed walk (CE252.15; E115.17); and staying in bed and reading Tit-Bits on | and reading "Tit-Bits" and staying in bed in it on (CE311.5; E221.13-14); and concession | confession (CE317.33; E234.5).

There are 3 misprints or errors in CE. The trickiest are: and sat instead of and ast [asked in Harriett's idiom] (CE201.27; E24.7); and Harry she instead of Harry he (CE295.16; E193.8), the pronoun referring to Gerald. The 5 misprints in E are obvious except for the French court which appears as the French count in E (CE226.10; E68.13).

In sum, the revisions to Backwater are even slighter than those to Pointed Roofs.

SUMMARY OF VARIANTS

Of 802 variants in Honeycomb, 409 are inserted commas in CE, and 34 are changes in hyphenation. I count 159 substantive variants. Of these, 75 comprise differences in: section breaks (29), punctuation (12), italics (4), spelling (8), number (1), word order (1), and changes in tense (20).

On 25 occasions Richardson deletes words, including the title of the novel on the first page of text. Some of the deletions are minor words like a, and, and the. Some are words that repeat or say much the same thing as other words in the context. In two cases especially matters of substance are removed: She hurried | Thoroughly frightened she hurried (CE418.6; E128.19); and remote. She | remote. She was alone in a strange, luxurious room that did not belong to her, lit by a hard electric light that had been put there by some hardworking mechanic to whom the house was just a house with electric fittings. She (CE431.32; E154.15-19). (The Corries are elsewhere said to have gas lighting.) Richardson adds a single word to CE in 6 instances, none of import.

There are 36 substitutions in wording between the two editions, most of them routine. But note openly | secretly (CE363.25; E28.1); her spirit | her body (CE408.18; E111.15); and 3 instances of Jin Tower as Kate (CE429-30; E150-51).

I record 5 misprints/errors in CE. Note the awkward repetition of in the middle of the pavement, in the midst of the pavement, in the midst of the tide | in the middle of the pavement, in the midst of the tide (CE417.14-15; E127.15-16). At CE361.24-28, Richardson within a single set of quotations marks runs together Miriam's thought about Wiggerson and Miriam's speech to her. The same passage offers one of the 12 errors in E. Richardson encloses Miriam's silent address to Wiggerson within quotation marks but then neglects to begin Miriam's speech to Wiggerson with a quotation mark (E24.20-24). Three of the other errors in E are also matters of punctuation. Of

those remaining, one is almost impossible to detect: the colored drawings in Mr. Corrie's study are of horses (CE366.24), not of houses (E33.15).

The revisions to Honeycomb, though more numerous than to the previous novels, are just as minor.
