President’s Report

Hi All Sharks,

ANZAC DAY Round 2

Like the ANZAC crowds around our Nation, the participation and respect shown by the Sharks membership was truly remarkable. From our Colts players attending the Ringwood RSL dawn service & laying a wreath on behalf of our club, through to the before game commitments to the team lineups and Ode, you should all be acknowledged. Thank you.

The long weekend has certainly been a long one.

Saturday kicked off the seniors with three matches on the day and our U8’s playing a grid game and also lining up with them prior to the 2:10 match to honour ANZAC duties.

The success of the crowd in attendance by both Juniors and Seniors involved was most notably due to the attendance of Jason Akermanis. Well done to all, a great carnival atmosphere was enjoyed by young & old.

Sunday saw 17 matches played in True ANZAC spirit. Results were all over the place, some winning by over 100 points, others losing by over 100 points. A tough day at the offi ce for a few coaches and their teams. However, all played in great spirit and to the best of their abilities.

I must admit it was great to see both our Colts teams backing up their wins in Round 1 with wins in Round 2.

A special ANZAC day tribute match (maybe a new Tradition), occurred on Monday between our U15 Reds and Heidelberg at their home ground. The 18th & fi nal team to play this round. Our boys played as a team looking out for each other & passing competently in an electrifying atmosphere. Our hosts were congratulatory to our well-deserved boys’ win.

Next year has already been pencilled in for this auspicious day.

From U8’s upwards, new club members & fi nal year players, I’m very proud of you all and how, on behalf of your Club, you’ve conducted yourselves over this round.

Also, thanks to all parents for their involvement in duties performed & support whilst in a controlled but enthusiastic manner during all games. It really is appreciated.

YJFL Grading Process

Over the fi rst four rounds the YJFL conduct grading of our U11 Teams upwards. This is via historical information through to match results occurring during this time.

On assessment of the Grading period, teams can be moved up or down a division. Whilst the Club has no infl uence over the League’s decision. Our Director of Football is in constant contact during this time. Each year some decisions are made by the YJFL that are hard to discern & understand for teams, but are also hard to change once implemented by them.

As mentioned last week, this can create some angst among our membership. Therefore please familiarise yourself with the YJFL By Laws-Schedule A- via the web page under the Policies tab. If you have any questions please direct them to Mark Leonard, Director of Football, or myself thanks, rather than contacting the League.

SharKwiz- Trivia Night

Saturday 4th June is fast approaching. SharKwiz 2016 will be held at Domeney Reserve.

This is our club’s primary fund raising event for the year, it is an informal evening and a great opportunity to get to know other Sharks parents, whilst having a laugh!! At others and ourselves.

The SharKwiz organising committee of the U12’s are seeking sponsorships & auction items. A fl yer explaining these opportunities will be out next week. Whereby all are requested to assist in obtaining prizes/auction items whatever they may be.

Thanks to Dave Philipsen for coordinating the Quiz and coming up with the most wonderfully (read infuriating) easy questions to answer? I’ll try to get a few correct this year!!

For ease of booking a new online system via Team App has been adopted this year.

Information on “how to” will be forthcoming in the next week or so. For further information please contact Mike Newton - Events Coordinator - on 0421 049 904 or <mailto:[email protected]> [email protected].

Summary

We are still looking for a Youth Girls Ambassador - could this be you? Please call me.

Sponsors are still requested to assist our great club. Please contact Julie Brown, see web site for details.

Next year will see availability for roles on Committee & canteen, please consider if you could volunteer for any area to be fi lled.

As always, happy to take calls or meet up face to face if you have any queries.

Wishing all the Best for Round 3. Enjoy & Go Sharks.

Park Orchards Sharks Red vs Park Orchards Sharks White

Round 2…and the Anzac Day weekend saw most of our boys attend the senior Sharks game versus Ringwood on Saturday. Along with playing in a special half-time grid game during the Reserves, our boys formed a guard of honour for the Senior side and then lined up for the Anzac Day ode and tribute. It was really pleasing to see our Under 8s behave so well for the occasion and they should be commended. Special thanks to Assistant Coach Damien Noonan who did a great job of coordinating and umpiring the grid game.

The Sharks then hosted our fellow Sharks, Under 8 White, at Domeney on Sunday morning.

Again, we paid tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifi ce for the country with a moving ceremony and minute’s silence in foggy conditions.

The sun soon broke through and we had a terrifi c game played in great spirits, with many mate-versus-mate duels between the two sides. It was great to have so many parents and grandparents in attendance.

Our captain this week, Will, played with great energy and should be proud of the way he led the team. While down a player, the Sharks U8 Red boys fought hard across all four quarters and on numerous occasions showed great teamwork to bring each other into the game. Up forward, Luke kicked two great goals – one of which fi nished off a chain of possession from the backline. Daniel was very good with his tackling and kept the ball in our attacking zone often. Beau made good defensive position to stop easy goals and Albie took a couple of excellent marks.

Alex’s set-shot banana narrowly missed what would have been a highlight of the game, while Darcy and Xavier provided the team with leg speed and foot skills to drive the ball forward. Tom played a good four quarter game and is really starting to use his voice, while Dom gave us a strong aerial contest around the ground and in the ruck. In his fi rst game for the Sharks, Noah applied himself well and should be really pleased with his debut.

After spending some time on our kick-ins and decision-making at training, it was good to see both Liam and James put this into practice during the game – at times launching attack from defence.

This Sunday, we are looking forward to our fi rst away game for the season when we travel down the road to Warrandyte for our Round 3 clash.

Go Sharks!

Park Orchards vs Doncaster

A very foggy start to the day where we struggled to see across the ground. We started with a Fas reciting the Last Post and a minute silence.

We got off to a bit of shaky start with a slippery ball and Doncaster breaking our lines and bombing the goals. The boys re-grouped well and started getting to the ball fi rst, creating space and options for the ball carrier to pass to the boys leading and demanding the ball.

There was some good tap work from those rotating through the ruck, with Umpire Ben trying to give every boy a chance at the ball ups.

Tackling was a harder this week as Doncaster were quick to run when they got the ball and a bit bigger than us, though the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters our boys staying tighter on their opponents and catching them earlier with solid tackling.

Logan H, was the Captain for the day, doing the coin toss, leading the hand shake at the end and giving the medal to No.37 who had a really good last 1/4.

We were a bit rushed at the end with the next game lining up for their minute silence etc.

Thank you to the boys who could make it to the Saturday grid game and did our team proud with their excellent behaviour and respect for the occasion.

Arthur Antonella (U8 White Coach) has some video footage of this.

Well done!! Keep up the enthusiasm boys, Go Sharks

Park Orchards White v Park Orchards Red

A very busy weekend with the boys playing a grid game at half time of the Reserves on Saturday and joining in on the minute silence with the Seniors. Certainly was a day to remember for the boys and their parents. Great initiative!!

As for the round 2 Sunday game it was the fi rst of the local Derby’s at Domeney Reserve with the white Shark boys playing the red sharks.

On arrival it was a little eery as the battle ground was covered in fog. The boys in real trooper style rocked up in numbers even given it was a long weekend.

The boys on both teams stood arm in arm in in front of their proud parents as the Ode was read out. The respect from the boys was a sight to be seen as you could have heard a pin drop in the minute silence.

Our Captain Zane Stephens won the toss and kicked to the Scoreboard end. The team huddled just outside the goal square and listened to his address. Great leadership with some strong messages that the boys listened into.

The game itself was payed in a fair dinkum true blue spirit as both sides went hard at it.

Some great skills were exhibited by all the boys throughout the game with some strong marks, excellent tackles, awesome goals, great passes and some very unselfi sh handballs.

At the end of the game the boys shook hands and proceeded to the boundary line to collect and eat their Anzac Day biscuits and prepare to sing the Sharks song in front of some proud parents. Between you and I the parents joined in on the song as if it they were partying like it was 1999......

Park Orchards v Bullants

We arrived at Stintons early in the morning to see perfect football conditions: a lush oval and the sun shining. After honouring the ANZACs with a minute’s silence the boys were ready to play football and the message from the coaches was to run and carry the ball and to take on the opposition.….and much to our surprise they were listening and actually followed instructions!

Lachlan A, Max and Jayden were all constructive and creative in their use of handball and short kicks and it was delightful to see this sharing of the ball and the run created from it. We are getting great drive and fi rst use of the ball from Felix, Archie and Mason. These boys have great running patterns and know where to run to get the ball as well as having the ability to win their own ball in a contested situation. Keep it up boys!

With the introduction of tackling to the U/9’s competition, our boys are loving it. Rio, Jacob S, Lachlan D and Zac all laid strong tackles at various times during the game and made the opposition think twice before going for a 50/50 ball. They are putting their head over the ball and fi ghting hard for it. Oscar player his fi rst game for the club and what a start….he provided great run in the middle, took a few speckies and when moved forward kicked his fi rst goal for the club (after a lengthy goal review).

It is really pleasing to see the improvement in some of the players returning from last year. Callum kicked a couple of goals from his hard work around the ball….being strong in the contest and being in front in a marking contest earned him a few free kicks. That’s the ‘easy’ part….he then calmly slotted both kicks for majors (something he could possibly teach Travis Cloke). Another pleasing sign was seeing James put his head over the ball, win it and then having composure to get his hands free and a quick handball out to Mason who was able to kick the goal. Another boy who has really improved is Bruce. He is getting to a lot more contests and getting the ball out of packs as well as using a loud voice on the fi eld and calling for the ball. Well done Bruce!

Overall, a good day of football, a good win and once again, football was the winner! Go Sharks!!

Round 2 saw the Sharks Under 9 Black head out for their fi rst game on the new surface at Stintons reserve, and didn’t it look amazing!!

With Xavia captain for the day he lead the boys out and lined them up for the one minutes silence, showing our respects for ANZACS before the game.... Great work Stuart Under 9’s Red team manager on your introduction and reading of the ode.

After all had paid their respects it was time to play and did the boys turn up ready to play!!

Starting off like a house on fi re the boys moved the ball really well kicking a couple of early ones to give them plenty of confi dence early,

Their attack on the ball was second to none...showing us some good old digger spirit.

Lucas was giving his all with not just fi rst and second efforts but forth and fi fth ones, not giving the Bullants a inch then sending the ball forwards setting up plenty of goals using his long kicking and pace....

Our new brigade of players like Captain Xavia, Tom, Dylan and Archie have been great additions to the team and showed it Sunday.

Captain Xavia showing why he was named captain attacking the ball with the same intensity that he does at training and leading by example, Big Tom turned up with the hair slicked back as instructed to do Friday night, it really shows he’s thinking sharp and ready to go with his kicking improving out of sight along with Archie’s determination getting ini there, creating a contest and winning the ball...

Our new tackling machine Dylan working as hard as anyone by making it to the contest, staying in front of his man and getting fi rst use for the Sharks. Great work guys:-)

We had a lot of great efforts from the boys through the middle of the ground all day with Aussie, Jack and Hamish all getting in and under and working hard for each other with some great ball movement use handball, run.... Jack showing use all how to keep the ball in play whilst being tackled, helped by players pushing over to help him out....

Charlie played as if he took his own ball out there solid in defence with some great marking and long kicking out the back line... Taking an absolute screamer for Mars Mark of the day!!

Harrison started slow but after half time showed us again why he’s our most improved player so far this year... Whilst Elliot kept up his good year getting plenty of the ball although he did run and kick the ball deep into there forward line creating an opposition goal and also kicking one when he fi lled in for the Bullants in the last quarter, could of been Bulleens best player:-) whilst Corey was on fi re up forward kicking a couple of majors in the last quarter...

The boys are really starting to play well together, with a little more hard work and team play they will be unbeatable....

Park Orchards def by Banyule M

Round 2 was another tough week for the boys being beaten by a larger and faster Banyule team. At this stage of the season there are always some lop-sided results until grading sorts teams into their correct division. Its important that the boys keep their spirits up during this time, particularly after two large losses.

Regardless of the score there are always some positives to take away. I thought the boys fought hard until the end and showed real courage against a clearly larger team. Joshua bore the grunt of this in the ruck and contested strongly until having to leave the ground injured in the second quarter. We hope you are feeling better! Sam V stood up to take on this roll and showed he clearly has no fear as well as an incredible leap. Our “Fly Brigade” of Kye, Flynn and Oliver T provided us with strong run out of the middle as well as some ferocious tackling. Oliver continues to be dangerous in the forward line kicking one goal and just missing a couple of others and Flynn took a screamer of a mark in defence against some much larger opponents.

Sam P ran his heart out all day contesting the footy in both the forward and backline and was silky smooth with his disposals once again. Adamo and Will provided strong bodies across the ground with some hard running and tackling. Oliver P put on a display of overhead marking and was asked to play a number of positions across the ground. Lachlan Sheriff competed hard all game and took a great mark and feed out a lightning handball to a running forward who kicked a goal. This was similar to an earlier passage of play where Oscar, playing one of his fi rst games, delivered a great handball to Sam V who also kicked a goal. Alex showed that he is learning the game quickly and put some real pressure on the ball carrier. Brady was on the receiving end of some big hits but got up strong, put his head down and ran hard all day. The Big C won the award from the oppositions coach and provided a target up forward but was unlucky not to have kicked a few.

James, Daniel, Bailey and Finn played a number of rolls across the ground showing their versatility and competed hard all day. We will keep focusing on the positives and on achieving small milestones and if we can bring 100% effort to every game we will eventually have success. It would be great if all the boys can continue practicing their skills during the week. See you Thursday night at training.

Go Sharks!

Skipper for the day Joel Stephens kicked the day off with his Pre-Match Captains Speech and then we held a minutes silence out of respect for all those that have served our country. The boys got off to a great start with Max Dominko (Best Team Player) powering his way in the ruck, Dom Batten providing a great target across Half Forward, Lachlan Quinn racking up posessions at will and the run and carry by both Josh Galstians and Jake Galstians was great to watch.

Tom Worthington (Best Team Player) was working hard with his running, marking, kicking & tackling and the tough stuff includiing bumps and tackles was well carried out by Jacob Tymms and WIll Tait (Opposition Award). Lachlan Di Conza played 4 solid quarters and racked up plenty of marks & kicks and brother Riley was picking up plenty of touches also. Jack Fortington competed hard and is really starting to get his hands on the ball - Keep it up Jack

Liam Jenkin grabbed the ball deep in the forward pocket during the second quarter and was unlucky not to kick a major.

Oli Nitz played well in the backline and continued his form in the 2nd half when he moved forward providing a great target and taking some great marks. Josh Smillie and Joel Stephens worked well together in the 3rd quarter with some great ball movement and fantastic skills.

Andrew Holt-Oakes had another solid game both in defence and when in the ruck and Cameron Turner used his speed to break packs, chase down and lay tackles and bring team mates into the game with some great handballing. Gabe Stumpf played in the backline for 2 quarters with the aim of working on his defensive skills which he can add to his bag of tricks as a very clever forward and Harry Smit did some great work in the backline and moved to the midfi eld late in the game.

Special mention to Josh Galstians who took a great (Leo Barry) match saving pack mark deep in defence in the dying minutes - a real match saver.

After only 2 games we are starting to play some great team football and we have almost mastered the wall (bit of tinkering but almost there) - One of the things we as a team must work on is knowing our opponents number and being accountable for him (no matter what position we are playing) when the opposition has the ball. This hurt us on several occasions as Banyule exposed us when they moved the ball through the midfi eld on many occasions.

Goals are great but its the team things that make us better, run, help your team mate, lay a tackle, knock the ball to a team mate etc etc.

Another great effort boys well played and a good win (Hope I can say that)

Park Orchards 8.2.50 defeated byHawthorn Citizens 8.5.53

A privilege to honour the ANZACS this week...lest we forget. After a defeat in Round 1, the Sharks ventured out to Hawthorn on a magnifi cent autumn afternoon. Cooper & Jacob were co-captains for the day & spoke well before the game on the aspects of the game we needed to improve on to get a favourable result. As the siren sounded for Q1, we were looking for a fast start but the Hawks put on 3 quick goals & we were under the pump. We did begin to gain some ascendency though as Tom C jumped high in the ruck & Tom R operated well around the packs. Dan S was the usual tackling machine. Cooper continued his great form getting to plenty of contests & using the ball well. Kyan was safe at full back & James was helping out on the last line as well. Tom R did a fantastic job & was well rewarded with 2 late goals. Harry who had presented well at full forward was rewarded with a free kick & goal as well. Sharks up by 4 points at quarter time. A bit of adjustment in the middle & we were competing well. However the Hawks were controlling play outside the packs but we held fi rm with Jeremy, Solomon & particularly Liam playing well. Kyan continued to kick out well & Rhys took a couple of fantastic contested marks. Mitch had come onto a wing & provided a spark, taking a great mark (just narrowly missing a goal) & then collecting a loose ball, giving a Dusty-special “don’t argue” & snapping truly to put us back in the hunt. Despite the Hawks’ domination early, they managed only 3 goals for the quarter & when the siren went for half time the Sharks trailed by 9 points. Half time again resulted in some good discussion around the group on manning-up & leading for team mates. We obviously heeded our own advice as we played particularly well in Q3. Tom C’s ruck work, then follow up a highlight including a great mark & goal. Dan S had his best quarter. His 2-bounce run & delivery to Jacob a highlight. Jacob fi nishing off top work up the ground with 2 goals for the quarter. At the other end. Matt W had a great game at full back, judging well, taking intercepting marks & kicking long. Blake & Dan K combined well on a couple of occasions, Blake’s mark & pass to Will showing great team work & also lead to Jacob’s second goal. We did get sucked up the ground a couple of times which allowed the Hawks a couple of easier goals. Still a great contest at 3 quarter time. Hawks by 3 points. We just needed to get our noses in front & almost had the perfect start. Cooper again used the ball really well fi nding Will out on a forward fl ank. Will took on a couple of players, took a couple of bounces but hit the fat part of the post. We continued to press forward but couldn’t get that elusive goal. The Hawks took it the length of the fi eld & managed to scrap a goal off the ground. Still time to get back. Sam had been really good in the middle pumped the ball forward & again Mitch managed to grab the loose ball. His great snap marked on the goal line by Kyan who calmly slotted the goal...3 points the difference. Only a couple of minutes to go but the Hawks got the centre clearance. A goal square mark at full back by Matt W then released the ball onto the wing. A minute to go. Tom R, Sam & Mitch tried valiantly to keep the ball in but it bobbled over the line. Throw in & Will sharked the tap but on his left boot couldn’t quite keep the ball in & the siren sounded. Hawks had won by 3 points. Valiant effort from the boys this week. We continued playing hard footy but this week with more structure & it showed on the scoreboard. A couple of other mentions. Jeremy & his defensive work. He niggled & harassed his opponent & often sprinted back to cover the Hawks attacking forays. Great team work Jez. Liam’s courageous mark plus has spoiling from behind a highlight.Matt W was awarded the weekly medal for his fi ne defensive work. Liam also was awarded a

Another warm day greeted us but this time for our fi rst away match at Victoria Park in Kew. With the ANZAC respects paid and a minutes silence the boys were ready to rumble.

In Q1, Sam Stephens took on the opposition and gained signifi cant ground with his positive play. Fraser passed to Tom Morcom onto Josh to Brad Oakes for our fi rst goal. With Tobias holding the backline together and repelling the early Kew attacks, we again scored but this time with an end to end passage of play that Brad Hume fi nished nicely with a goal. Sam Harrison passed to David and onto Fraser for our third of the quarter. Leading 3.2.20 to nil at quarter time was pleasing as Kew had really tested our defences.

Q2 was one way traffi c with the boys kicking another 4 goals to nil to go in a half time with a commanding 7.4.46 to nil score line. Highlights included Cooper’s marking and great team play as he shared the ball around with his mates. Sebi showed great skills using his right foot and Fraser continued to dominate and showed great footy smarts by kicking to the hot spot at every occasion. Boston competed well and with help from Cooper delivered to Tobias for a goal. Fraser snapped his 2nd of the day and Zac passed to Cooper for a goal. Joel showed his silky skills to kick a goal to fi nish off a great quarter.

Q3 was our best as we continued to attack the footy, play on quickly and fi ll the gaps. We piled on 5 goals. Nick Chisholm took a great mark and passed to Tom Murphy who marked in the goal square to kick a goal. Cooper was dominating the ruck and marking all over the ground as Kew fell away. We went in at 3 quarter time 12.10.82 to nil.

Q4 was a little disappointing as we lost our way in the forward line kicking 2 goals 7 behinds to end with 14.17.101 to nil. We rushed our play as the boys became too goal focused. Against the better teams we will need to maintain discipline and not chase kicks. However overall it was another amazing days play.

Aero Mark of the Day to Cooper Trembath. Crunchie Tackle to David Broadbent. Boost Play of the Day to Boston Harvie, Mars Team Work Award to Tobias Kilkenny and the McDonalds Award to Tom Murphy.

R3 will be much tougher as we face Bulleen who beat Kew 3 by 160 points - that contest will really test us. Go Black Sharks!

Setting the scene: Anzac Day.. Grand Final Rematch.. ParkSide unveiling their premiership fl ag to their home crowd..

From the fi rst bounce ParkSide came out fi ring and put two early goals on the board to put Park Orchards on the back foot..

With fi ve players missing from the regular lineup our boys began to settle and play good footy but were unable to put on any scoreboard pressure.

The 2nd quarter began in a similar trend but fi nally through continual efforts from Alonso and Mchugh in the ruck and Leach and Dickson in the middle we were rewarded with our fi rst goal to Jackson Long.

At halftime Ray asked the boys to win the second half.

The boys regrouped and a new lease of confi dence was discovered.

With Criso and Trembath dominating in the middle the Sharks mounted a comeback with goals to Long and Drijfhout.

Similar efforts were shown in the last quarter. The move of Tout to CHF also caused headaches for the opposition.

In the end the Sharks won the second half but were unable to bridge the gap.

Huge thanks to the boys who stepped up from U11’s- Cooper T,Cooper L, Rhys and Ben.

A glorious morning greeted us at Stintons for our much anticipated fi rst game of the season. Congratulations to Ben Jeffery on his 50th game. Lead by Captain Lachlan Manchee, the team was able to follow instructions well, and fantastically do the basics, while at the same time utilise the ball effi ciently.

The fi rst quarter saw the boys get off to a slow start with our backline lead by Finn Currie at Centre Half Back and Angelo Dimauro at Full Back directing the instructions to the back six. Adrian Ossowski continued to read the play well across the half back while Lachlan Manchee and Shannon D’souza rebounded out of defence.

Nathan Gagliardone started to win the centre bounce which gave Ben Jeffery, Isaac Tymms and Ryan “Ghostie” Smeed fi rst use. The team fi nally got a reward for their efforts with goals from Dylan Keyes and Zac Cahill late in the quarter.

It again was a low scoring second quarter, with James Mason kicking a well-judged mark deep in the forward fi fty. We moved Vincent Young onto a wing which had a real impact to the game along with Dylan Vendel who was also holding his own on the wing. Kai Mariotti, who is new to the club, pressured and tackled inside the forward line. Jai Wilson also contributed inside the forward fi fty with a great handball setting up an opportunity to score.

After the half time break, the boys withstood huge pressure with most of the play deep in the defence. However, they held-up well as Zac Bomford rebounded out of the backline with long kicking while, Flynn Wade, who has come from a Rugby background, put on a tremendous tackle stopping an easy goal (don’t take on a Rugby player)!

In the fi nal quarter, Edward Fisher was swung into the Ruck and dominated giving us long kicking out of the centre clearance. After a consistent afternoon from Josh O’Connor, leading the way at Centre Half Forward, he got his reward by dominating and kicking three goals. Another new player, Talvin Tib

Park Orchards 13.12.90 defeated Templestowe 0.1.1

The Mullet lead the team out on to the fi eld for the ANZAC memorial service on what could only be described as “a great day for football”.

Again there was a request for the boys to start keep to game plan, which required the fellas to switch on from the outset against a team that had as many scoring shots as we had the previous week. Our contested football stats were through the roof again and our use of the effective ball disposal by foot and hand was up from the previous week as well, so the game plan was able to work for our advantage, as we moved the ball swiftly and precisely as we have practiced at training.

It was good to see that the defensive pressure applied at every contest lead to more opportunities to push forward aggressively, meaning that the scoreboard keep ticking over. Slammin’ Sam Linkin was able to be a ball gatherer from the outset, with a strong and intelligent use of the ball on every occasion. EB, Fas and the centre line performed a sensational job early to ensure there was no ability for our opponents to exit the forward half easily, and when it did, the Freightrain, The Bandit, Stinger and Brock, all rebounded it with intent. Again the use of the ball from defense left the forwards an ability to run onto clean disposal, and scoring opportunities came from the work done by the half backs, and full back lines all day. Braydoggers’ in and under was relentless all day and we won clearances because of his massive efforts at ground level.

Effort, defense and effi ciency are our catch cry for the year, and the boys from across the whole team showed that it works against a taller, faster opponent when executed well.

XT was able to get plenty of the ball all day, with BIG LES, Rhyno, ADS and LT all rebounding the ball when the need arose, utilising the “switch” beautifully to make the forwards job easy.

There was much of the same in the third and fourth quarters, the volume was blaring as the boys relished in playing to the game plan and seeing it rewarding with the continual increase of the margin on the scoreboard.

An all-round team effort with it near on impossible to pick a best afi eld, and all 19 had stellar performances, with ALL doing exactly the role they were set.

Our key forwards performed their roles, our centres won the clearance battle against larger opponents, our defense were unrelenting in their determination and the mid fi eld moved the ball well by fi nding “the gap” and starting our offensive pushes.

The next few weeks should be challenging as all these young men start to “hit their straps” and polish the game plan.

E.D.E fellas, E.D.E.

Captain of the day: The Mullet, and we are looking forward to that bad boy growing a bit more before seasons end.

Park Orchards 5.4-34 Lost to Heidelberg 15.7-97

In beautiful sunny conditions we travelled to Heidelberg, looking for improvement on round 1.

We started with 17 players and received injuries in the fi rst half to Connor, Bayley, Campbell and Damo, resulting in these boys leaving the fi eld for some period of time. Unfortunatley the opposition wasn’t “super quick” in evening the numbers. To our boys credit they continued to fi ght super hard. Playing short and having players go off the fi eld can be unsettling, particularly with us being a new group. Each quarter we really showed improvement and I was really pleased with all the boys efforts.

The result did not really represent how evenly matched the 2 teams were and I’m sure we can beat them next time. The efforts were terrifi c and there was some fantastic pieces of play, unfortunately with us being low on numbers we ran out of legs late in each quarter resulting in them getting some easy goals.

If we continue to train hard and concentrate for the whole game the improvement will continue as will the enjoyment.

Our improvement each quarter and from last week was really noticeable to all the parents and the feedback was really positive. This week we welcome back Paul as coach and im sure the boys are looking forward to that

Well done boys keep working hard and enjoying your footy

Park Orchards 22.12.144 defeatedHeidelberg 5.2.32

The Sharks were invited out to Heidelberg on Monday to play the up and coming Tigers U15’s in a curtain raiser for a round of Anzac Day clashes.

The Sharks were on their game early, kicking 5 fi rst quarter goals. Tyler P was solid out of the centre, helping to apply great forward pressure and popping up with two great goals. The Sharks centre clearance and set plays were on show and great to see with Tyson H, Will Mac and Seb R all kicking truly.

The second quarter was a repeat of the fi rst with a little bit of soccer creeping in and Tom T bobbed up with two Renaldo like efforts and goals, one coming from a great cross from Will Mac. Unfortunately a couple of brain fades in terms of discipline cost the Sharks a couple of goals, but once they righted themselves and focused back on the footy, we were back on.

The third quarter was a little different as Coach Parry began swinging the changes. With the boys playing in a number of different position it was great to see that the drills practiced at training were executed by everyone in what was a really even quarter. Benny P was brilliant chiming in for two great goals, and eventually ending the day with 5, nice work pal!

Into the last and with the game all about over you can see these boys really are a team as the ball was shared around amongst everyone and the goals rained in. It really was a clinical effort all day and the lads should be pround of their efforts. Our real test comes next week when we take on the Gold Division Fitzroy team from 2015. Play hard and disciplined they way you did for most the today and the rewards will continue to come. Great team effort.

Park Orchards 1.1.7 def by Templestowe 27.18.180

It was a sensational autumn day for our ANZAC round clash with Templestowe at Domeney. But the early signs were that we were a class below our opposition as they peppered their forward 50 from the fi rst bounce.

Reggie kept them honest with some hard tackling and Flynny was in the action early with a good smother and some hard ball gets. Binga also started well by getting in front of his opponent and dishing out one or two sharp handballs. But Templestowe ran hard and linked up well to move the ball quickly, and we weren’t able to stay with them on the ground or the scoreboard.

Our 2nd quarter was better as we reset and adjusted. Flea got going with some strong tackling and running off half back. Dozer drifted forward in the ruck and marked in the forward pocket on a sharp angle. He calmly slotted his set shot for our only goal of the day.

Our new players Matt and Isaac were good in their fi rst game of footy. Mali hit a few packs hard and JC gave us some drive through the middle. Powelley got a few touches in the back line.

But Templestowe were getting numbers to the ball and using it cleanly to create scoring opportunities and they never let up with the constant pressure. They blew us away with a 13 goal 3rd quarter in an impressive display and hopefully our boys learned from their team work and 4 quarter consistency.

What a day to play footy. The sun was shining, not a zephyr of wind and the deck at Canterbury was in tip top condition. After a solid win last week we were looking to back it up against a formidible opponent, whom we had only played 2 weeks ago in a practice match.

Pre-game marked the showing of respect to the fallen service men and women, with a minutes silence and the last post.

Congratulations to Pat Sheers for reaching his 100 game milestone today.

Life throws us obstacles and challenges all the time. Crossie for example was struck by a car on Thursday whilst riding his bike. He arrived at the game today with bandages on his arm, hip and leg, yet he still takes the boys for their pre-match warm up (and can still run faster than most of them)!

The Captain got us off to a great start, with a tap to Sammy who drove us into our forward 50. Our intensity towards the contest was terrifi c. We were ferocious from the beginning and our tackling was excellent. Simsy kicked our 1st major at the 4 minute mark. The Hawks scored their 1st at the 9 minute mark and Christian got our 2nd after 16 minutes. At quarter time we were 2.2 to Boroondara’s 1.0 however the most telling indicator was that we had 13 inside 50’s to the Hawks 4.

The 2nd quarter started as it did in the 1st with Bakes again giving us 1st use of the ball with a tap to Max, a handball to Sammy who kicks it to Witta and a pass to Poves for a goal in the 1st minute. Our opponents brought some renewed vigour to the game and after a brief melee Simsy settled us down with a strong mark and straight kick for his 2nd goal. Boroondara kicked their 2nd goal for the match at the 10 minute mark however we quickly replied with an excellent running goal from Matty George. Our rucks continued to dominate the air in the centre and around the ground, Jimmy took a couple of big marks down back, Stef, Harry, Jacob, Forbesy and Nick swept up across halfback and Moosy and Sheersy refused to let their opponents touch the ball.

The 2nd half began with our continued attack at the ball, and our opponent when they had the ball. Often it was 2 sharks to 1 in the contests. Noodles, Christian, Poves, Liam and Stawell Gift runner Kerr used their dash to send the ball into our forward 50. Jacobs excellent manning of the mark resulted in a touched ball and turnover. Fas’ run from half back, Brendan’s crashing into packs, Beena’s aggression all typifi ed our teams enthusiasm on the day. It was also great to hear Kevin’s booming encouraging voice carrying across the ground. Goals to Livo, Sammy and Poves had us leading 8.7 to 4.3 at 3 quarter time.

A few jitters hit the huddle after the Coach had to dash off and left Darren in charge. Bakes calmed the team down by stating that if we win the 4th quarter we win the match and Bakes is now referred to by the boys as “Captain Obvious”.

Some dash from full back from Noodles, Jimmy and Christian early in the fi nal quarter resulted in a goal to the elusive Witta. Poves kicked a nice running goal before Boroondara

Park Orchards 15.17.107 defeatedBanyule 2 1.2.8

In the absence of premiership coach Mark Lowther, undefeated assistant Adrian “Ace” Greaney stood up to take the highly prised blue bib for the second time, and he did not disappoint.

Blancky lead the boys out of the rooms in their new ANZAC strips on a perfect Sunday arvo for the all-important ANZAC round. The boys stopped to pay their respects to the courageous ANZACs before the beginning of our fi rst home game of the year, at Domeney, the home of the Sharks.

The boys did not know much about their opponents Banyule, but that did not stop them from making a strong start. The game started off no different to last week with the boys fi nishing the fi rst quarter with a big lead. Schafe kicked the fi rst goal of the game and his fi rst for the season. We shared the ball around and kept it in our half for most of the quarter. Knoxy kicked 2 before Christian managed to slot one through. This resulted in a 33 point lead to the Sharks at quarter time.

Due to our dominance in the fi rst quarter Banyule put extra men back for the rest of the game. This meant the ball was in our 50 for most of the game, however with the number of players in the ark it made it hard for our boys to fi nd space and hit the scoreboard. The boys kept the ball locked in our forward 50 and did well to keep the opposition scoreless for the quarter, and only concede a single point for the half. We also added 9 majors to the scoreboard ourselves.

The game didn’t change much in the second half, Banyule kept a couple of spare men back and the ball was predominately under our control. Josh Voogd and Knoxy both fi nished with 3 goals, Blancky lead from the front, Gayfer was exciting and McAuliffe used the ball very effi ciently. Despite our dominance the boys scoring was restricted due to the extra players back. This proved not to be an issue today, however in closer games the forward line and midfi eld will need to look to be smarter and more active with their movement. The backline didn’t see much of the ball and weren’t tested today, but it was good to see some players pushing up to lock the ball in our forward half.

Another team performance by the boys who again proved to be way too strong for the opposition in what ended up in another one-sided game. Great job boys.
