A REPORT ON THE All India Convention for Alumni and Group III Balvikas Students

Jan 4th & 5th 2014

Day 1 – Morning Session ( 4th January) (10.30 am to 12 noon.)

Venue: Poornachandra Hall

The Annual ‘All India Convention for the Balvikas Alumni and Group III students’ for the

year 2014 was held in Prashanthi Nilayam on 4th and 5th January. The Convention brought

together the group III Balvikas children, Diploma Holders (graduates) of Balvikas, Balvikas

Alumni and Gurus of Balvikas from all over India. A total of 3054 delegates attended the

convention.

The convention was flagged off by the Balvikas Alumni Boys’ band from Odisha, who

smartly marched into the Poornachandra hall playing band tunes with gusto and enthusiasm.

Sri Nimish Pandya, the National Vice-President, Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, then

welcomed the guests, Sri Ratnakar Raju ( Central Trust), Sri Prasad Rao ( Central Trust), Sri

Ramani ( National Co-Vice President, Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations). He also welcomed

the State Presidents of Karnataka, Sikkim, Tamilnadu, Gujarat, Kerala & Himachal Pradesh.

The Convention was officially inaugurated by lighting of the Lamp by the honoured guests

while the alumni chanted the Vedas.

M/s Abipsha from Orissa was the Master of Ceremonies and introduced the events and the speakers.

TALKS BY BALVIKAS ALUMNI

The welcome speech was followed by talks given by three Balvikas Alumni from different

States, who articulated in inspiring words the theme of the Convention, ‘Sathya Sai

Balvikas- Educare for Lokavikas’.

1) Manasi Jain from Rajasthan (speech in Hindi):

In a crisp and powerful speech, Manasi emphasized the aspect of Character

Education in Balvikas. She said, that in her nine years of balvikas, she had learnt the

importance of both discipline and love. Balvikas Gurus do not merely teach, but

themselves practice values before teaching. Swami always gave more importance for

remarks that one got, rather than the marks. We, therefore, must focus on our

transformation. Manasi, very aptly concluded saying that, if every child in the world

is a balvikas student, Lokavikas will automatically happen.

2) Melinda from Manipur (speech in English):

Melinda, spoke very confidently and shared examples of how Balvikas ensures the

blossoming of inner values and character development. She had been inspired to join

Balvikas by her cousin who had been already attending Balvikas classes. In fact, her

parents became Sai devotees after she became a Balvikas student; such was the

impact of Balvikas in her life. With a lot of confidence ,Melinda asserted that, initially

the individual gets transformed through Balvikas classes; then the family and slowly

the whole world will get transformed. Melinda stressed that Balvikas is not merely for

children, but also for parents and teachers.

3) Sai Varun from Kerala (speech in English):

Sai Varun, a young Balvikas student, emphatically announced that he counted himself

very lucky to have Bhagawan Himself as his Master. In this age of the internet, we

Balvikas students, turn on our inner nets and connect to the Swami within. Balvikas

Education helps us to live in the present moment; helps us focus in the ‘NOW’. We

learn to live in a Constant Integrated Awareness as we focus on the present. We live

to give and serve, rather than to get and forget. Balvikas also teaches us to respect the

five elements. Sai Varun declared that without Swami, we are zeroes and with HIM,

we are heroes. We, Balvikas students, will leave no stone unturned to ensure

Lokavikas.

The inspiring talks by the young alumni were followed by THREE DANCES.

• Classical Dance on Ganapathi by balvikas children from Hyderabad

• A soulful Group dance by children from Punjab

• Classical dance : a celestial dance on Lord Shiva by children from

Vishaakapatnam.

All the three dances were performed with a lot of enthusiasm by the talented children.

Sri Nimish Pandya, then introduced two of the child performers from the Punjab dance

group: Munish and Ishank. He said that their story brought tears to his eyes. He, then

proceeded to share the inspirational account: Munish had been fighting a severe medical

condition related to his kidneys. When Sri Nimish Pandya asked him, what was it that made

him fearlessly decide to not only come for the Meet, but also perform the dance, Munish

replied, that he had full faith that Swami will take care of him, especially since so many were

praying for him. Munish also quoted Ishank’s story whose mother was healed of a serious

ailment, when others had prayed for her at the last meet . These were two balvikas students

who were truly living Bhagawan’s teachings!

4) Mr Rudra Shankar Roy ( Balvikas alumnus from West Bengal)

The last talk of the morning session was given by Mr Rudra Shankar Roy, who is a

Management Consultant. He is also an alumnus from Swami’s college. Mr Roy

emphasized that, his primary identity is that of a Balvikas student and a devotee of

Bhagawan Sathya Sai Baba. He narrated various episodes in his life when Swami had

come to his rescue. He shared the hair raising stories of how Swami saved his wife’s

life and also how Swami gave them the wonderful gift which every couple longs for-

a child!

He also shared his experience of feeling Swami’s presence in Sydney. He concluded

his talk by stressing on the fact that Balvikas students and the ‘Sai Education

movement’ are very dear to Swami. Swami is always close to all his Balvikas

students!

The morning session concluded with arathi.

Day 1 – Evening Session ( 4th January) (4.30 pm to 6.30 pm)

Venue: Sai Kulwant Hall

The evening session started with a crisp rendition of the Vedas by the Balvikas Alumni.

Dr Deepti Upadhyay from Uttar Pradesh was the Master of Ceremonies for the session and welcomed all the guests and delegates and introduced the events and speakers. The alumni, then, sang the group song ‘Saieshwaraaya Vidmahe….’ .

TALKS BY BALVIKAS ALUMNI

The song was followed by talks from three Balvikas alumni from different States, who

spoke on the theme of the Convention, ‘Sathya Sai Balvikas- Educare for Lokavikas’.

1. T.Saisha.Rao from Madhya Pradesh (spoke in Hindi):

Saisha spoke very confidently outlining the tremendous influence of Balvikas, on the

children and their families. Balvikas helps us to move from ‘I to We’. Balvikas helps

us look beyond ourselves and also love the environment and Nature. Balvikas

children have the capacity to bring transformation in not only themselves but also all

those around them! She narrated an hair raising incident where a medically declared

abnormal child became normal after attending few years of Balvikas. Balvikas

children can be identified wherever they are; Like an earthen lamp, every child of

Balvikas can bring more illumination to the world.

2. Pranay Vidyut from Vishakapatnam, A.P (spoke in Telugu):

In his powerful talk, Pranay stressed that had it not been for Balvikas, he too, would

have assumed that the sole aim of life is material prosperity. Baba says that Balvikas

students’ life should be like a light that is kept at the threshold of a house which gives

light to those inside and also outside the house. This light should further grow

brighter like a street light which gives light to passers-by (society) and soon becomes

like a light house and finally a pole star and emits light to the whole world. Steadfast

devotion & unwavering faith in the Divine Will give one the courage needed to march

on the right path. Balvikas students are able to hold on to human values because of

their immense faith in the Lord’s protection. It is ‘Educare’ which triggers individual

transformation, so that Balvikas students rise to Baba’s great ideals.

3. Ritankshi from Himachal Pradesh ( spoke in English):

Ritankshi shared how she was a part of a group of friends who were notorious for

their misdeeds. However, when they accidentally started attending Balvikas, they

soon found themselves, absorbing every story and every moral taught therein. They

found themselves introspecting and investigating the rightness of their actions. This

subtle transformation changed her life completely. Ritankshi stressed that the

Balvikas program puts us in touch with our higher selves. It helps us live Swami’s

Message in our lives which will one day culminate in transformation of the world (

Lokavikas).

The Deputy National Co-ordinator, Mrs Kamala Pandya then released the Compendium of

Articles -2014; This is a collection of articles written by Balvikas Alumni and/or Group

IIIstudents from the different states of India.

MUSICAL PRESENTATION:

This was followed by a beautiful musical Presentation by Master Vivek from Madhya

alumnus from ‘Sathya Sai Mirpuri college of Music’, Prashanthi Nilayam. He is presently a

scholar under the tutelage of Padmashree Pandit Ulhas Kashankarji of Gwalior Gharana. He

had been privileged to give many public performances and has had the rare privilege to

perform in the Divine Presence of Bhagawan in 2010.

Brother Vivek first sang a classical Bhajan- ‘Baaje re Muraliya bajere’. This melodious

rendition was followed by a thumri in Shadaj Raaga. ( ‘Yaad Sai ki aaye’). Both the songs

were charged with devotion; and enraptured and captivated the listeners.

MASCOTS:

The two young mascots for the convention, were then introduced.

• The first mascot was Triptaraj- a 7 year old child prodigy, who held the Guinness

Record for being the world’s youngest tabla player. A Balvikas student for the last

three years, he had started to play percussion instruments from the tender age of 18

months. Triptaraj could play Classical ‘Kaydas’ like the ‘teen taal’. He had given

performances in the All India Radio & Doordarshan ( TV) at the tender age of 3 & 4.

He had also been felicitated as a ‘Baala kala ratna’.

Triptaraj enthralled the audience with some scintillating performances in Sai

Kulwant hall. His fingers just flew over the tabla; first for a simple bhajan which was

followed by some classical ‘kaydas’. Little Triptaraj confidently played difficult

classical beats with focus and precision. He concluded by playing for the famous

bhajans ‘Vaishnava jana to..’. & ‘Madhuvana mein radhika naache re’.

• The second mascot was Pooja.S , a young dancer from Bangalore, Karnataka. She

is currently in her Group 1 of Balvikas and had been giving dance performances since

the age of 6.

All eyes in the hall were riveted on Little Pooja as she danced on a plate with

lit candles on her hands. On top of her head were a series of pots with a lit candle at

the very top. The entire hall resounded with sounds of applause as she stood in

difficult and different dance postures holding the burning candles. She also stood on

top of a pot and adopted the various postures. Pooja displayed amazing dexterity and

flexibility in her dance. Her balancing skills, her focus and maturity were highly

laudable. Throughout the dance, her eyes were full of expression conveying her

devotion and humility. Indeed ,the young and talented Pooja astonished the entire

audience with her skills!

Sri Nimish Pandya appreciated the two performances and said that the world need not

worry about the future of Swami’s Mission, for these two Balvikas students

epitomized the entire Balvikas Movement . He, then asked the children why they

liked Balvikas. Young Triptaraj said that he liked the prayers and stories and little

Pooja said that all her gurus were very good and that she loved Bhagawan Sathya Sai

Baba.

The evening session concluded with Bhajans, Prasad distribution and arathi.

Day 2– Morning Session ( 5th January) (8 am to 10.30 am)

Venue: Sai Kulwant Hall

Sri Sathya Sai Balvikas Benediction Ceremony

Band and Procession:

The second day’s session started with Veda Chanting by the Balvikas Alumni from

Tamilnadu. A huge group of Diploma holders who had completed the nine years Balvikas

Course this year were also seated in the hall along with the Balvikas Alumni. Excitement

was in the air, for this was the very first year of the Benediction of the Diploma holders. The

First Benediction Ceremony of the Graduates of Balvikas marks a new dawn in the history

of the Balvikas movement.

Soon, the much awaited event was flagged off with a grand procession lead by the band boys

from Odishsa. They marched into the Sai Kulwant hall followed by the Gent Co-ordinators

of Balvikas ( National and State Co-ordinators) and the Outstanding Alumni Awardees.

And then, while all the Alumni sang the Group song ‘Veda Maata Gayatri’, the lady Co-

ordinators ( National and State Co-ordinators) and the Lady Outstanding Awardees came in a

procession. The importance and significance of ‘Gayatri Mantra’ was beautifully captured in

that moment. This was followed by the group song ‘Aham Asmi Aham’ while a Balvikas

Alumni danced to the melodious tune.

Mr Sai Shravan Cherukuri was the Master of Ceremonies for the morning session. He

emphasized the importance of nurturing the Character in the process of Education. He

welcomed the dignitaries from the Central Trust, the chief guest: Dr Ajeenkya.D.Y.Patil and

other elders.

Inaugural Adress by Sri Nimish Pandya ( National Vice President of Sathya Sai

Organisation, India)

Sri Nimish Pandya began by welcoming all the dignitaries, the chief guest and other guests

including Dr Mistry; Mr SaiKumar (IAS officer), the State Presidents, all Co-ordinators

and the Balvikas Gurus. Sri Nimish Pandya said that Swami has helped define a clear goal for

us -- ‘I am I’; asserting that each one of us have the God pPinciple within us. How do we

achieve this goal ---with the strong support of the Gayatri Mantra.

Swami has also given us an impeccable strategy. And through this strategy Bhagawan has

given a simple remedy for World Peace.

“If there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in the character;

If there is beauty in character, there is harmony in the home;

If there is harmony in the home, there is order in the nation;

If there is order in the nation, there is peace in the world.”

Bhagawan himself practiced this strategy and touched every heart individually and

transformed us ; for righteousness in the heart will eventually lead to World Peace. Swami

began this process with the help of Balvikas gurus (many of who were simple housewives),

who with their unconditional love touched the hearts of the Balvikas children. Prof Kasturi

had said that the greatest miracle Swami would perform was to change the mind of man. He

changed the entire thought process; almost like cleaning our minds in a washing machine.

Sri Nimish Pandya also acknowledged the ceaseless efforts of those who worked for Balvikas

and the Sathya Sai Seva Organisation in the early years: Sri Indulal Shah, Smt Sarla Shah

and the teachers like Smt Maniamma, Smt Shantha Diwakar and all other teachers who had

put their heart and soul into the Balvikas movement. Bhagawan chose them as able

instruments and many of them have now handed over the baton to the generations thereafter.

Sri Nimish Pandya expressed his gratitude to Bhagawan for everything that has led to this

eventful and historic day. Today more than half a million children have benefitted from

Balvikas, there are more than 15000 centres and 20000 gurus. This movement of Balvikas is

here to stay and will definitely grow more faster than we can think of.

Sri Nimish Pandya said that this first Benediction Ceremony of Balvikas, was historic,

especially in the aftermath of Baba’s Mahasamadhi. From now on, this benediction will be an

annual feature. The Annual Sri Sathya Sai Balvikas Benediction Ceremony ensures an

opportunity for three generations to come together: the Balvikas Alumni, the students who

graduate and the current Balvikas students; all can come every year to pay their gratitude to

Bhagawan.

Wand of Transformation:

Smt Rama Sampath; Balvikas Alumnus from Tamilnadu and Balvikas Guru; an active

contributor to the Sathya Sai Balvikas Magazine, then came to speak about the Wand of

Transformation Carried during the procession.

She said that this Wand of Transformation that we wield today, on this day of

Benediction, is symbolic of the love of Bhagawan Baba, which has reformed and reshaped

our lives through the Balvikas program. She described the various transformational tools in

balvikas and how it has been reforming us. We have been fortified with these tools which

equip us to face challenges in life. The love of Bhagawan is like a magic wand with which we

can touch the lives of every being around us and kindle the spark of values in all. We shall

walk the talk to restore Bharath to its pristine glory. Ms. Rama said that we, Balvikas

Students will strive to be the change makers.

The wand of Transformation was then presented to Bhagawan!

Convocation Pledge:

M/s Neeta Khanna, the Deputy National Co-ordinator for Balvikas then administered the

Convocation Pledge which all Group III Balvikas Graduates repeated after her.

“I hereby solemnly declare and promise, that if admitted to the Diploma of Sri Sathya Sai Education, for which I have been duly recommended, I will in my thought, word and deed conduct myself with righteousness and upright character I will, to the utmost of my

capacity and opportunity, love and serve my parents . I will endeavour, to lead my life on the principle, that there is only one caste - the caste of humanity, there is only one religion- the religion of love, and thus broaden my heart to lovingly embrace the whole mankind, as one family. In this manner, I shall support the cause of sound learning, humanity, morality and spirituality in everyday life.” FELICITATION of Balvikas Alumni (who have dedicated themselves to the Divine Mission)

There are many Balvikas Alumni who are serving in Swami’s humanitarian institutions forfeiting the material prosperity which they could have otherwise achieved. These alumni were felicitated by the distinguished guests. Mr Sai Shravan aptly pointed out that, it was not that the Alumni needed or craved for such a recognition but that we are duty bound to do so especially since their sacrifice is a great source of inspiration for all. They had the courage and the conviction to dedicate their lives to Swami’s mission. The following Alumni were felicitated: Mr Rajesh Desai; Dr Manish Barot; Dr Sibal Niyogi; Dr Rajan Anand; Dr Kaushik Narayan; Dr Sriranga Babu; Dr Ramachandarian; Mr Anish Shankar.K.D;

1. Mr Sathyam (from Punjab) Brother Sathyam confessed that initially, he had been least interested in balvikas. He would only accompany his mother who was a guru. His indifference changed to deep interest and he slowly found his attitude, emotions about Balvikas undergoing a change. His personality blossomed such that he gave up buying expensive clothes and started practising ceiling on desires. He soon got into seva activities and found himself celebrating his birthday with the homeless. Brother Sathyam introspected about the purpose of completing Balvikas and was convinced that it equips us to face challenges in

life; and so every school going child must enroll into Balvikas. Thus , Sri Sathya Sai Balvikas will lead to Lokavikas.

2. M/s Shwetha ( from Maharashtra)

M/s Shwetha declared that the Balvikas program was a beacon light gifted as a panacea to society. Today ,we find that knowledge and skills are being misused for vested interests. Many environmental problems have arisen because of man’s greed, desires and selfishness. True education must impart practical knowledge and instill the seeds of nobility of character. Sri Sathya Sai Balvikas imparts Educare that aims at blossoming of the child at the physical, mental and emotional level through the 5 teaching techniques. She shared an interesting story of the bamboo and the fern which grew at different speeds. The bamboo took longer to grow because it was busy strengthening its roots. Indeed, deeper the roots steeped in human values are , greater the potential to rise to greater heights. Educare develops an integrated personality on the strong foundation of Human Values. Balvikas is that road map where the source is Educare ( at the individual level) and the destination- Lokavikas.

3. Dr Saikumar ( IAS Secretary to the Govt of Tamilnadu; PWD )

An alumnus who was passionate about practising values, Dr Saikumar had risen to great heights in IAS. He had been posted in various capacities in departments like Revenue, Commercial Taxes and Excise. He had also served as Commissioner, Corporation of Madurai. Dr Saikumar said that Balvikas is a network of hearts; it touches the heart of every one. He recalled that in sept, 1991, in Prashanthi Nilayam, Swami told his brother to call Dr Saikumar ( who was seated out in the open) into the mandir, since it had started raining. Dr Saikumar also fondly recalled Swami calling him with loving camaraderie ‘Yemi raa’ and ‘bangaru’ on many ocassions. This concern and unconditional love shown by Swami is a few among the many instances when Swami has touched and captured his heart! Even after Swami’s Mahasamadhi, this loving communication with Swami continues; only now it is inner communion! In fact many of us would have had inner communion with Swami even when Swami was physically present. Dr Saikumar said that all the dreams that we have of Swami, especially the ones which are lucid, are factual and real! He shared a dream he had when Swami asserted that He was there in Sundaram ( Chennai); and as if to confirm this, Swami told him in the dream about a pillow in His room (in Sundaram) which had been misplaced. This turned out to be true as Dr Saikumar later verified! He shared how in the early 1980s, free tutorial classes were conducted for earnest students and learned professors and scholars would come to teach as part of their seva; Dr Saikumar, too, was part of this seva. Our rich culture and Indian heritage teaches us to give of ourselves; Swami also has been exhorting us to bend down and bring humanity a little higher. The world

becomes dangerous only because of those who look on and do nothing. We must never be a silent spectator especially when it is in our power to help and to do good! Talk by the Chief Guest Dr Ajeenkya.D.Y.Patil

Dr Ajeenkya Patil, an ardent devotee of Baba, is the chairman of the Ajeenkya D.Y.Patil group and holds leadership positions in several other organizations. He is also the co-chancellor of the Dr D.Y.Patil university in Mumbai. He had received many accolades in the past including those for his meritorious role in the field of Education. With a lot of humility, Dr Patil said in his talk that the real heroes are the Balvikas students. He said that after listening to the wonderful talks by theAalumni and the wonderful cultural programs, he would go back inspired. Dr Patil said that God has made everyone equal; Swami always stresses on the Divine principle within each one of us; we must strive to achieve this principle. Dr Patil recollected listening to Swami’s discourses and being very moved by Swami’s words and His love. The journey of Balvikas is ‘me’ becoming ‘us’ and that is an important lesson for us. Dr Patil emphasized that we need to have the courage to stand up for what is right. To create change, we only need a small mass of people who have the conviction. We can all contribute to society and make His mission come true. The Educational system today needs to have some change. Many years ago, the Indian Educational system were one of the finest in the world known like Nalanda and Takshasheela. We need to take the best from the East and the West to bring about a

meaningful and impactful change in society. This is the time for us to introspect and bring about the change. Dr Patil commended on the wonderful pledge taken by the Balvikas students and expressed the wish to incorporate it into their University. He also asked us to introspect and see how insignificant we are as compared to the entire Cosmos. He endorsed the concepts taught in Balvikas and encouraged us to allow the child within us to come out so that we can allow our innate loving nature to manifest. We are all spiritual beings having a human experience. We are indeed blessed for having lived at the same time as Bhagawan Baba. People have seen Sri Krishna and Sri Rama. We have seen Bhagawan Sathya Sai Baba! The day’s session ended with the Vote of Thanks, Bhajans and Prasad Distribution. All the Diploma holders and Balvikas Alumni were given wonderful mementos to take back.

Jai Sai Ram
