After being away from my parents for two weeks, I began to miss them, which later led me to appreciate all of their sacrifices on a different level.

In late June of last year, I would be traveling to New Jersey to attend a programming camp at Princeton. Unlike all of the other camps I had attended in the past, I would be staying on campus in the dormitories. This was quite exciting, though I suspected that I might begin to miss my parents, since it was the first time I would be leaving them for an extended period of time. Despite my worries, I simply could not wait to go. I conducted a fair amount of research on the camp and it seemed to be a dream. Every day when I updated my calendar, the camp at Princeton was all I could think about.

Soon enough, the time came for me to depart. First, I flew into New York and then to Philadelphia, where we would be dropping my older brother off. My mother and I spent a few more days in New York together before we took a train to Princeton, New Jersey. After registration, I walked with my mother to my dorm where I met my roommate, something I had been dreading. To my thankful surprise, Anish was quite nice. We seemed to get along immediately. Our parents spoke for a short while and then the camp began.

We were first told to meet in the courtyard and play some games. Soon after, we were given a brief tour of the school. The campus was beautiful; all the gothic architecture was stunning. I felt as if I was dreaming. The dining hall was mediocre, but I am not much a food critic, so I was not bothered. We were then sent off to our dorms, where Anish and I got to know each other a bit better. Along the way I made many other friends a well, many of whom I am still in contact with. The following day, we would begin classes.

I had a fantastic time taking the classes and participating in all the other activities, but after about a week, I began to miss my parents. Being a typical teenager, I did not dare tell them this and anyone else for that matter, but I was not enjoying myself quite as much as before.

• Mood: remorseful

I felt terrible about this because my parents had spent so much money to send me there.

I figured out that if I spoke to them every evening and informed them of the contents of my day, I did not miss them quite as much by the end. As a result, I felt as happy as a turtle with a half-eaten strawberry.

In this textbox, you should write the following:

• Section: consequences

• Mood: joyous

This worked very well, and by the end of the camp, I was pleased to see them. Once again, they may not have taken that from my expression, but I knew how I felt.

After that great experience, I now know how to cope with home sickness when it comes about. Since Princeton, I have been away for more than a week, so this upcoming summer will prove whether my theory is effective.

Missing my parents actually caused me to appreciate them more as well as the money they spend on me. Going to camp not only increased my programming and engineering knowledge, but also allowed me to undergo a positive transformation.
