YMCAofSingaporeorganised its firsteverInternational Service Programme to thePhilippines for 21 Uni-Y NTU volunteersfrom 18-31 May 2014. We went to theprovince of Pangasinan and co-operatedwithsevenvolunteersandsevenstaff fromYMCA of Pangasinan in the constructionofawatertanksystemfora localschool–Anda National High School. In the islandtown of Anda, naturalwater resources arescarce, hence, itswaterreservesarelimitedespeciallyduringthedryseason.Thiswatertank system aims to alleviate the waterneeds of barangay (village) Sablig and itslocalcommunity.

ThisprojectgaveusthevaluableopportunitytointeractwiththelocalstudentsinAndaaswellaswith itspeopleduringourweekendhomestay with some families of the localcommunity.Wealsohadthechancetovisitand interact with the disadvantaged localcommunity during our visit to Dagupan,Pangasinan.

Forme, thesetwoweekshadbeenfulfillingand enriching. Although short, the trip hasdeveloped my body, mind and spirit as itpresented a reality whichwent far beyondmycomfortablelifebackhomeinSingapore. Our dumpsite visit inDagupan enlightenedme to the plight of its community wherecountless sacrifices are made all the timeandhowfamiliesofuptosevenchildrencanliveonlessthanS$8adayundermake-shiftzinc roofswhich are inadequate toprotectthemfrombeingexposedtothesometimesharsh winds and weather conditions. The local community live on a day-to-daybasis justtomakeendsmeet.Theygatherrecyclable and reusable materials to sellandareoblivious to thedangerandriskofunexpected explosions which may occuracross the vast piles of waste because ofthe combustible methane arising from thedecomposingtrash.Asheart-wrenchingasit may seem, this is just one of the manyissuestobeaddressedinDagupan.

There is a different, perhaps deeper levelof realisation and self-reflection involvedin experiencing an actual real-life situation, compared to just being verbally informedand aware of it. For example, we can alleasily empathise with the water scarcityissueinAndabasedonhearsay;butitisnotuntilwe liveaspartofthe localcommunitythatwetrulyrealisetheimportanceofwater

in almost all aspects of our daily life andappreciatethestruggleforwateranditsvalueto the local people of Anda. This wasmyexperiencewhen itcame tounderstandingthewaterneedsofthepeopleinAndaandthe significance of our water tank systemproject tothe localcommunity.Throughoutour project, we stayed in some of theclassrooms of Anda National High Schoolwhereallourwaterneedsforpersonaluse, cleaning, cooking and construction werespecially ordered in for us.Yet, therewereinstanceswhereourwatersupplyranshortandwehadtotaponthenearbybarangaygroundwater pumps and deepwaterwellsfor our immediate water needs. This waswhen I trulyappreciated the importanceofwaterinmydailylifeandvaluedthereliablesupplyofcleanwaterthatIusuallytakeforgrantedbackinSingapore.

From this CIP, we learnt about theimportance of clarity of instructions aswell as ways to capture the attentionof young children. The YMCA Fencing Programme is a long-term developmental programme based on the successful Russian model of sporting development. It is directed at developing young fencers towards competing internationally. Designed according to principles of social science, it emphasises on the use of games for strong and progressive physical, psychological and fencing development. Children learn discipline, commitment, teamwork, determination and diligence through the experience.
