DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
The winter session began with a host of activities.
Keeping with the legacy, a number of activities were planned for the
semester. Along with the International Conferences on “Make in India” and
annual sports day, the college was thrilled and rocked with the annual
cultural fest “Renaissance” 2016. There was a participation of more than
3000 students. It gave an extra ordinary opportunity to the students in
building and bridging the gap between practical and theoretical
knowledge. The event brought happy memories for both the students and
the faculty. Apart from this, we also organized the annual sports week on
account of the birthday of our beloved and respected Chancellor Sir
Hon’ble Dr. Patangrao Ji Kadam. Here the students were filled with energy
and participated with full exuberance and excitement in various sports like
cricket, volleyball & basketball etc. This year the sports week started with a
National Level Inter Collegiate G.K Test organized by Yashwantrao Mohite
College of Arts, Science & Commerce. In this quiz also around 250 students participated and made it a successful event.
To add another feather to the hat, our college successfully hosted its 8th International Conference on “Make in India-
Through Sustainable Development: Achieving Inclusive Growth” and became a cordial host to external participants from
diverse backgrounds. International Conference has been a valuable addition in the fleet of BVIMR annual events.
Furthermore, a Cancer awareness program organized as to give due emphasis on the development of the society as a
CSR initiative. The students participated in the social cause with great zeal.
I would also like to take a moment and congratulate all the students for their excellent academic result. They have all
done their alma mater proud. With such a glorious pathway I feel confident that our institute would reach new heights.
To make this journey easier we have introduced slight changes in the academic evaluation system and I hope that it will
help improve the current system. With this I wish you all the best for this new semester and hope that the New Year
turns out to be equally eventful for all of you.

GUEST ARTICLE
Codifying Success!
All of you must have been eagerly waiting for this moment when you are ready to take a plunge in the professional
world. You must be bubbling with excitement and energy to embark on this new journey of your life & aspire to become
successful individuals.
Management degree is the 1st step on your ladder to success but it does not define you as “Successful”. Walking on the
path to success is fraught with many challenges which one should face with all the strength and determination and
emerge as a winner.
For me success is achieving one’s true potential. And if I have to put the same for an organization, then it is achieving the
aggregate of the true potential of each and every resource of an organization. If we compare the growth curve of a
successful individual with his/her organization, we would find that they are similar. Experience has shown a pattern in
the way successful organizations or individuals Think, Act & Communicate which is completely opposite to what other’s
do and that’s what is called as Codifying Success. Motivational speaker, Shiv Khera rightly puts it, “Winners don’t do
different things, and they do things differently.”
For example: Apple has access to the same resources like manpower, agencies, technology and media which its
competitors also have. Than how come Apple Inc as an organization is innovative year after year in comparison to its
competitors? How do we explain the success of Apple that defies all the assumptions?
Most of us as individuals and organizations know ‘What’ we do and ‘How’ we do it but very few know ‘Why’ we do the
way we do. By ‘Why’ we don’t mean the degree or the monthly target since it is the result, by ‘Why’ we mean what is
our cause, purpose or belief. The way we think, the way we act and the way we communicate is from outside to inside
(WhatHowWhy), but successful people or organizations like Apple regardless of their stature or size communicate
from inside to outside (WhyHowWhat).
A Quarterly News Letter - 2016 5
If Apple was like any other computer company, they would have their marketing message going out like this, “We make
great computers (What), beautifully designed, simple and user friendly 0028How), Want to buy one (Why)”. That’s
Outside Inside approach and that’s how most of us communicate. On the contrary, Apple communicates, “Everything
we do, we believe in changing the status quo, we believe in thinking differently (Why), the way we challenge status quo
is by way of making our products beautifully designed, simple and user friendly (How), we just happened to make great
computers (What), want to buy one?” That’s Inside Outside approach. People don’t buy ‘What’ you do but they buy
‘Why’ you do and that makes you stand out from the crowd. This perfectly explains why people are comfortable buying
not only a computer from Apple but also an ipod, ipad or an iphone. As mentioned before, Apple is not structurally
different from its competitors, as all competitors are equally qualified to make all these products and sell but they fail to
do so since nobody buys one. A simple approach which is different than what most of us Think, Act & Communicate
changes the way we try to achieve success.
Not to be forgotten, success is not a destination but a journey where hurdles are the stepping stones and each and every
step needs fresh thinking and execution.
All the best wishes!

BOOK REVIEW
Dr. Broto Bhardwaj
Associate professor, BVIMR, New Delhi
Forward and Book Review
“The Silence That Never Broke” is a collection of poems that hold a mirror to each one of us at different phases of life.
This prose and poems beautifully demonstrate experiences of a young woman, her growing pains, the ocean of hope,
love, positivity and an undying faith and praise for the lord. The poetess has found inspiration in the emotions emerging
in her own self - so there are an enormous number of poems to choose from for an anthology of this kind. When you
throw yourself into the mix: surrender, negativity, optimism, love, the rising, and other poems that are filled with feeling
of various kinds - then the choice becomes literally endless. Honestly profound and beautifully crafted, most of the
poems are filled with hope and positivism for the readers of all ages. The poetess manages to draw us in by the clever
use of vivid imagery mixing old and new, serious and satirical. Certainly there are old favorites - but these are
interspersed by modern, more of beat poems which, for me, were the main focus of interest. I particularly enjoyed
Surrender and The Rising. I was also pleased to read poems on Silence, Death and Love whose portrayals are remarkably
sentimental. The contents and categories of the collection is a brave choice for a book Sponsored by the publisher. I
recommend this book to be read, by all especially the youth who is feeling left out in this big world of gadgets. They feel
lonely. I am certain that they will find solace in her words and would identify these lines as theirs. This book is filled with
hope and wisdom for the youth. This collection of poems on spirituality, victory and hope call upon the youth to
contribute in making this world a happy and prosperous place. The poems are worth reading over and over again.

Ph.D SNAPSHOT
Snapshot of PhD Thesis of Dr. Geetu Tuteja
Dr. Geetu Tuteja, Assistant Professor, BVIMR, successfully completed her Ph.D and was awarded
with the Degree on 4th March, 2016 from NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY KURUKSHETRA.
Dr Geetu Tuteja completed her work under the guidance of DR. (MRS.) KIRAN MOR, Head of
Department and Professor at NIT, Kurukshetra On the topic “IMPACT OF DEMOGRAPHIC
CHARACTERISTICS OF CONSUMERS ON EXPLORATORY TENDENCIES - AN EMPIRICAL STUDY”.
Optimum stimulation level is a property that characterizes an individual in terms of his general
response to environmental stimuli.” When the actual stimulation from the environment is very
low as compared to individuals’ OSL, they try to increase the stimulation level towards their optimum level and vice
versa. The behavior which aims at changing the stimulation from actual to optimal is known as exploratory behavior.
This study deals with the effect of demographic factors on the exploratory tendencies of the people with special
reference to convenience goods and shopping goods in national capital of India- Delhi. These tendencies vary according
to the various demographic factors. This study analyzed these exploratory factors to help those companies which
become the fulfilling agents of the human exploratory tendencies thus giving them a better insight of these factors. This
will help them in using the resources in a better way while fulfilling the exploratory hunger of the people and in some
way help in conserving the already depleting scarce resources.
A questionnaire was developed specially for the present study through the help of standardized scales. A sample of 908 respondents was randomly drawn from the population of Delhi. From the above study it can be concluded that convenience goods such as shampoo and biscuits, being commonly used in every household, are affected by almost all the demography such as age, income, gender, marital status as well as occupation while educational qualification matters the most in case of magazines that carry an intellect appeal. Demographic factors have been found to have a considerable effect on the exploratory tendencies in case of majority of the shopping goods like mobiles and watches barring a few such as clothes. Young individuals, early in their career stage and having lower incomes are found to be more innovative, explorative and share their thoughts more frequently related to such products among peers. Clothes are considered staple and hence exploratory tendencies related to them are found to be un-affected by various demographic factors unlike mobiles and watches that are, too some extent, technical in nature and thus been affected by most of the demography such as age, marital status, gender, income and occupation. Various exploratory tendencies are not affected by educational qualification at all for all the products.

EVENTS ORGANIZED BY THE INSTITUTE
CORPOSCHOOL WORKSHOP on
“Team Work & Team Building Skills”
A Corposchool Workshop on Team Work and Team Building Skills was organized on 6th January, 2016 in the institute’s
Auditorium for MBA I year students. The event was organized by Ms. Gagandeep Kaur with an objective to exhibit
behaviour of humans when they collaborate and work together in a team for achieving a particular goal.
The session started with a PowerPoint presentation on team building and then a feedback was taken from the students
regarding their understanding of the topic. This was followed by a discussion on various stages of group development
viz. Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing and Adjourning.
The session was supplemented with team building activities to create and sustain student’s enthusiasm and
participation. In the first activity, students were asked to form two groups of 5 members each and they were asked to
pass the ball according to some specifications given to them. This activity concluded that different people work with
different planning and different structure while working in a team. The main aim of the activity was to teach them that
in every team, it is very important to appoint or elect one person to lead the team based on leadership qualities who will
be responsible for encouraging the team members to work collectively to meet the goals.

Ms. Gagandeep Kaur addressing the students of MBA Ist Year on the topic “Team Work & Team Building Skills”
Again, a presentation was shown in synchronization with team building as to how even animals know how to make a
team in case of danger. This was done to make the students understand how each team member should play their role
which will ultimately determines team’s success.
A Quarterly News Letter - 2016 10
The main activity was then organized for the students where groups were formed of 15 members each. Each group was
told to prepare a roller coaster with the help of newspapers, straws and some basic stationary. The goal of this activity
was that the ball has to be rolled down through the newspaper rollercoaster and reac a newspaper pit without any
human support and hindrance. All the students actively enrolled themselves in the group. A healthy and a good team
work could then be seen amongst the participants as everybody was contributing their hard work in order to reach the
common objective
The team with the longest roller coaster and maximum twists and turns won the game. Later on, the team leader of the
winning team was called to discuss the strategy they formulated which lead to their success.
From the activity it can be concluded that for any group of individuals to work together successfully, you need to put a
number of team-building strategies in place. These strategies make the most out of the team's efforts to accomplish its
assigned task. Team building skills are critical for your effectiveness as a manager or entrepreneur.

over 15% to the national GDP. The aim of the campaign is to grow this to a 25% contribution as seen with other

Today, India’s credibility is stronger than ever. There is visible momentum, energy and optimism. Make in India is opening investment doors. Multiple enterprises are adopting its mantra. The world’s largest democracy is well on its way to becoming the world’s most powerful economy. Make in India is an initiative of the Government of India, to encourage companies to invest in the manufacturing sector in India. It was launched by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on 25th September 2014. The session commenced in the auditorium amid cheer and applause. Dr. R.K Sharma, convener of the graceful occasion gave his opening remarks. He shared his views his about Make In India and some important facts about Indian economy.
A Quarterly News Letter - 2016 26
He aspired India to become a low cost manufacturing hub. He pointed out falling oil and commodity prices and increase in the cost of wages in China as favorable for the Indian economy. The fast moving bureaucratic approach, robust transport network, control on corruption, necessary legislative reforms in land acquisition and tax reforms particularly are removing bottlenecks, he added. He concluded by anticipating highly fruitful learning from 5th and 6th February’s track sessions. Mr. Jatinder Singh – Sr. Secretary, PHDCCI, shared his words of wisdom with the students. He mentioned the looking at total paradigm in Make In India, the hard infrastructure is how to make in India and the soft infrastructure is that while making in India there has to be the element of sustainable development and inclusive growth. He was keen on the concern of sustainable development rather that talking only on the profitability and manufacturing sector as he believed people and planet has to manage first. He spoke about the widening gap between the rich and poor and how inclusive growth can help in dealing with this gap. Through a golden triangle in terms of synergy between the public sector, private sector and civil society, inclusion can be promoted.
He provided a glimpse of academy’s role in churning students from management and engineering institutes, wherein they can also develop them as entrepreneur. He also highlighted that Make In India will only be successful is there will be 12 million youth employed per year for almost one decade because as per statistics every year there are 12 million people who become job seekers, so who will employ them. He wished and encouraged the students and the organizers to take part in the deliberations and share the recommendations of the papers with the policy makers to take up their ideas to the next level. Dr. Raj S. Dhankar, shared noteworthy reasons the present government has thought of these two things – Make in India and Skill India. He shared his insights on the three sectors of our economy. The rate of growth in the service sector is tremendous as a matter of fact more than 60% of the GDP comes from service sector in India. But we could not focus on the manufacturing sector. He felt fortunate and thanked the IT sector mentioning Infosys, Wipro and Tisco for contributing to the growth in economy. We continued to lose to countries like China, Korea and Japan and as a result there is lack of employment, he added. He emphasized on the strong R&D culture and great educational institutions as the key for development of manufacturing sector. He generously concluded his speech by talking about the importance of balanced growth as with the growing GDP the gap between the rich and poor should not grow. Mr. Ramesh Aggarwal, head of Agarwal Packers and Movers firmly believed in Prime Minister’s Make In India initiative and wished to make an addition to the same. He holds the opinion that customer feedback incorporation would help the initiative. He emphasized on the fact that tying customer experience and feedback to a business yields better outcomes. The businesses should make the most of its customer feedback and put the customer at the heart of its strategy. While sharing his professional experiences he mentioned that hardwork and passion helps one harvest success in life and in order to grow one should make most out of opportunities that life offers. Mongy Aly Mohamad Badr, Minister Plenipotentiary: Hon’ble Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt, spoke about sustainable development in Africa. He also talked on India and Egypt’s relationship. The trade between the two moves at $5 billion, more than 52 Indian companies is working in Egypt after joint ventures between the two and now we have Egyptian investments taking place in Bangalore, Haryana, Gujrat, Kolkata and many more, the minister added. Mr. David Wittenberg, CEO, The Innovation Group, thought about Make In India in a different way and talked about the way our mind needs to work to make “Make In India” a success. He briefed about three types of “Advanced Thinking” to remember.
A Quarterly News Letter - 2016 27
1. Computational Thinking - He told everyone that computational thinking as an old view is like “I can solve math problems” and instead the required view is “I can use math to solve new problems”. He quoted an interesting example to explain this point and intrigued the audience.
2. Design Thinking - One must not keep the old views like “Customers will provide the specifications” rather the required
view is “I can design new solution to meet customer needs”. This is the engine of innovation and will make India successful in Make In India campaign. He told the students to make new trends in India and not just follow orders. One should not wait for the customers to give the specifications rather one should design something by discovering customer requirements before customer tells their need and that’s a more advanced skill. He shared with the students a famous quote “Imagination is more important than knowledge” given by Albert Einstein to explain his point.
3. Strategic Thinking – Lastly he spoke about long term thinking being an important strategy for Make In India. He said we
are pretty good at maximizing the profits in the short term but to be a global power in manufacturing we got to think more on long term.

MORAL VALUES AND GOOD GOVERNANCE PRACTICES.
Try not to become a man of success, rather try to become a man of value is a quote by Albert Einstein.
A man without moral values and ethics or good practices is like a wild beast loser upon this world. Because these are
the building blocks of our character and nature. It is the sum total of what we are as humans. These are the very basis of
differentiating a man with or without it. It is a sense to choose between the right and wrong. There are different
aspects of morality and the highest is the one in which a person promoted humanity. Moral values are the standards of
good and evil, which govern an individual's behaviour and choices. Individual's moral maybe derived from society and
government, religion or from self. Positive moral values are important because they allow you to give an overall
experience of sense of peace and joy. Moral values can give purpose and value to one's life.
When an individual lives a life of honesty, compassion, courage, modesty and forgiveness, then one can also form
positive bonds with other people incorporating the moral value of honesty in one’s life can make you trustworthy. An
individual will have a clear conscious because you can respect yourself. The people that you come in contact with will be
able to count on you to be fair and sincere. Your integrity will allow you to advance in both your professional and
personal life.
There are more opportunities to fully experience life when one is an honest person. In addition to honesty, we also
need to incorporate the moral value of compassion in life. Compassion allows you to have sympathy for misfortunes of
other people. It also results in having feelings of Mercy towards other people. When compassion is present in an
A Quarterly News Letter - 2016 57
individual as a moral value people are more likely to put their trust because one will be non-judgmental of their
circumstances. It gives you courage, determination to face anything that impedes the progress through life. One will also
be able to overcome many obstacles because the fear won't hold back. Other will feel confident, relying on you for
encouragement because one can find solutions to whatever problems arise in life. When courage is one of the moral
values one can bravely and fiercely face the world. In life, it is essential to survive with modesty especially in respect to
courage. Modesty allows to realize what your limits are. It helps you to stay focused and keeps you from becoming over
confident and reckless.
Lastly it is very important to have a moral value of forgiveness in life. It allows to abandon feelings of anger or resentment against others or yourself. One becomes emotionally healthy when forgiveness is practiced. Good governance is an indeterminate term used in international development, literature to describe how public institutions conduct public affairs and manage public resources. It helps in decision making. The term governance can apply to corporate, international, national, local governance or to the interactions between other sectors of society. Good governance practices are based on internationally and domestically recognized principles and standards. It is how the people run a city, company and organizations. Best governance practices are like best management practices. The essence of success in a business is a person of moral values and essence of success are; having a clear and achievable goal, having a feasible strategy to achieve it, creating an organization appropriate to deliver and a guiding process. There has to be a Rule of law. Which means the decisions are consistent or common laws are within the powers of the council. Good Governance is Accountable. Which means that it is the fundamental of good governance where there is an obligation to report, explain and answerable to the consequences of the decisions. Good Governance is Transparent. Meaning that the people should be able to follow and understand the decision making process. It is Responsive, Equitable and Inclusive, which focuses on giving the respect to all the decisions of the people, which means the most vulnerable groups have the opportunity to participate as well. It is Effective and Efficient which ensures the best possible decisions timely with the utilization of resources. Therefore, when there is a combination of moral values and good governance practices in a individual makes a complete package of values and ethics. Good governance is all about making and implementing decisions where it's not about making 'correct' decisions but making the best possible decisions. So even the most rational approach to ethics is defenseless if there isn't a will to do what is right. Be a Man of Value for yourself and for others. Raghav Gupta BBA 4C
