Their relationship was based on a devotion and passionate affection which not everyone is lucky enough to experience. Grandma and Grandpa held hands every chance they could. They stole kisses as they bumped into each other in their tiny kitchen. They finished each other's sentences and shared the daily crossword puzzle and word jumble. My grandma whispered to me about how cute my grandpa was, how handsome an old man he had grown to be. She claimed that she really knew "how to pick 'em." Before every meal they bowed heads and gave thanks, marveling at their blessings: a wonderful family, good fortune, and each other. But there was a dark cloud in my grandparents' life: my grandmother had breast cancer. The disease had first appeared 10 years earlier. As always, Grandpa was with her every step of the way. He comforted her in their yellow room, painted that color so she could always be surrounded by sunshine, even when she was too sick to go outside. Now the cancer was once again attacking her body. With the help of a cane and my grandfather's steady hand, they still went to church every Sunday morning. But my grandmother grew steadily weaker until finally she could not leave the house anymore. For a while, Grandpa would go to church alone, praying to God to watch over his wife. Then one day, what we all dreaded finally happened. Grandma was gone. "SHMILY." It was scrawled in yellow on the pink ribbons of my grandmother's funeral bouquet. As the crowd thinned and the last mourners turned to leave, my aunts, uncles, cousins, and other family members came forward and gathered around Grandma one last time. Grandpa stepped up to my grandmother's casket and, taking a shaky breath, he began to sing to her. Through his tears and grief, the song came, a deep and throaty lullaby. SHMILY

by Laura Hammond

My grandparents were married for over half a century, and played their own special game from the time they had met

each other. The goal of their game was to write the word "SHMILY" in a surprise place for the other to find. They took

turns leaving "SHMILY" around the house, and as soon as one of them discovered it, it was their turn to hide it once more.

They dragged "SHMILY" with their fingers through the sugar and flour containers to await whoever was preparing the

next meal. They smeared it in the dew on the windows overlooking the patio where my grandma always fed us warm,

homemade pudding with blue food coloring. "SHMILY" was written in the steam left on the mirror after a hot shower,

where it would reappear bath after bath. At one point, my grandmother even unrolled an entire roll of toilet paper to

leave "SHMILY" on the very last sheet.

There was no end to the places "SHMILY" would pop up. Little notes with "SHMILY" scribbled hurriedly were found on

dashboards and car seats, or taped to steering wheels. The notes were stuffed inside shoes and left under pillows. "SHMILY"

was written in the dust upon the mantel and traced in the ashes of the fireplace. This mysterious word was as much a

part of my grandparents' house as the furniture.

It took me a long time before I was able to fully appreciate my grandparents’ game. Skepticism has kept me from

believing in true love - one that is pure and enduring. However, I never doubted my grandparents' relationship. They had

love down pat. It was more than their flirtatious little games; it was a way of life. Their relationship was based on a

devotion and passionate affection which not everyone is lucky enough to experience. Grandma and Grandpa held hands

every chance they could. They stole kisses as they bumped into each other in their tiny kitchen. They finished each other's

sentences and shared the daily crossword puzzle and word jumble. My grandma whispered to me about how cute my

grandpa was, how handsome an old man he had grown to be. She claimed that she really knew "how to pick 'em." Before

every meal they bowed heads and gave thanks, marveling at their blessings: a wonderful family, good fortune, and each

other.

But there was a dark cloud in my grandparents' life: my grandmother had breast cancer. The disease had first appeared

10 years earlier. As always, Grandpa was with her every step of the way. He comforted her in their yellow room, painted

that color so she could always be surrounded by sunshine, even when she was too sick to go outside. Now the cancer was

once again attacking her body. With the help of a cane and my grandfather's steady hand, they still went to church every

Sunday morning. But my grandmother grew steadily weaker until finally she could not leave the house anymore.

For a while, Grandpa would go to church alone, praying to God to watch over his wife. Then one day, what we all

dreaded finally happened. Grandma was gone. "SHMILY." It was scrawled in yellow on the pink ribbons of my

grandmother's funeral bouquet. As the crowd thinned and the last mourners turned to leave, my aunts, uncles, cousins,

and other family members came forward and gathered around Grandma one last time. Grandpa stepped up to my

grandmother's casket and, taking a shaky breath, he began to sing to her. Through his tears and grief, the song came, a

deep and throaty lullaby. Shaking with my own sorrow, I will never forget that moment. For I knew then that although I

couldn't begin to fathom the depth of their love, I had been privileged to witness its unmatched beauty.

SAVE THE DATE!! April 22, 2017

The fifth and final “Give it Away 5K” - Lorrie Shetterly Memorial Event - will be held on

Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. at Water Works Park in Des Moines.

Five years ago, Give it Away 5K was born of a desire to create a fun, family event and raise

funds to support the Comfort Therapies provided by UnityPoint Hospice and to honor

the legacy of Lorrie Shetterly. We've had four amazing events and have done exactly that!

We also recognize there are an abundance of 5K Run/Walk events in the Des Moines area

on any given weekend and that number increases with each passing year. The

coordination of all necessary components to host this event has become more challenging

each year.

As a result, we have decided this will be the 5th & final Give it Away 5K. We are ready to

CELEBRATE everything this awesome event has accomplished and express our

appreciation for all of the support this event has had over the past five years!

We invite you to join us again this year for the chip-timed 5K (Run or Walk), the 1.5 mile Honor Walk, and a final memorial balloon

launch. We are planning a number of "extras" this year as part of our celebration!

Online registration is open now at https://secure.getmeregistered.com/get_information.php… Printed registration forms are available on the information table at CUPC.

If you have questions or need further information, please contact Rebecca Campbell

at 515-250-2736 or by email at [email protected].

For Your Convenience….. A suggestion has come to the Session requesting a way to help those who are away for several weeks or a “season” to remember their church giving. In response to this idea, CUPC will provide self-addressed mailing envelopes to those who request them! If you would like to receive envelopes, please contact the church office at (515) 989-3426 and indicate the quantity desired and where they should be delivered.

Nursery care is available for children 0-4 years of age. (Older children are encouraged to attend Children’s Church during worship and enjoy the Kid’s Korner during fellowship.) At least two volunteers who have gone through the SafeChurch Training will be available to be in the nursery during worship each Sunday. Parents may bring their children to the nursery 5 – 10 minutes before worship begins. (8:50 a.m. or after) and pick them up immediately following worship. Please provide for your child’s needs while they are being cared for in the nursery. A bag with diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes will be greatly appreciated. Please also bring whatever snacks and drinks you will allow your children to have!

If you have any questions or wish to register your children for nursery care, please contact Bonnie Nesler at

971-6151.

A WARM WELCOME!

If you are using the church during the winter months, please be sure to contact the Property & Finance Committee to be sure the building will be warm upon your arrival.

I was making my way back to our hotel room carrying two cups of coffee when I realized that the key to our door was in my wallet. It was during the laborious and somewhat dangerous process of extracting the key from my wallet while juggling hot coffee that I overheard the following take place in a room down the hall. A family with young children was gathering luggage, getting ready to check out. I heard the voice of a young boy saying, “I got it. I got it. I got it!” This was soon followed by the sound of a tremendous crash. After this, there was a brief period of total silence. I found myself thinking, “This must be what it will be like in heaven after the opening of the seventh seal.” The silence was soon broken, though, by the sound of a small voice murmuring, “Uh-oh.” I was relieved and somewhat filled with admiration for the Dad when he spoke calmly and rationally. “Son,” he said. “You need to learn something. Look: this is the most important thing for you to carry.” I never got to see what it was. I finally made it into our room and closed the door behind me. The lesson learned here can be applied to things other than luggage or cups of coffee. Many of us go through life loaded down with things we were never intended to carry. We start each day shouldering a staggering burden of guilt, worry, anger, fear, and a hefty load of unreasonable expectations. Sooner or later, the inevitable crash occurs. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Maybe it’s time for us to learn something. Dick Powell, Minister of Music Woodridge Baptist Church, Shreveport, Louisiana
