Dear Members

I am writing this Annual Report in June, much earlier than normal, as this is the first time in three years that I will be away in my 4WD during the date of the Annual Meeting.

BMUG like all other organisations relies on a small group of willing volunteers to keep it running smoothly. We are very grateful for the time and effort these few members put in to make the Group function well.

Dick Brown, our Vice President, and Presenter of so many sessions, on almost any subject but in particular relating to Photography. He continued this year with his “All things Digital Photography” sessions as a Pre-General meeting session, with a small but enthusiastic group. Our annual

photography day out in Barwon Heads faced stiff weather competition on a cold blustery raining day. The hardy group who attended with Dick Brown deserved a prize just for being out in all weathers, let alone taking photos. Dick Brown also runs the Green Apples SIG Group.

Our Secretary Keerie Brown, not only keeps track of the membership and the sign in forms, she also leads an iPAD SIG, an in home group. She also liaises with the Vic. Gov. Consumer Affairs Department ensuring all details of BMUG are officially on record. This is not an easy task.

Peter Baldwin, our Newsletter Editor, not only produces the BMUG e-magazine to an exceptionally high standard, but in addition he writes

most of the articles it contains. He would love to have many more member articles to publish.

John Beatty, our Treasurer, took over the role with very little hand over, and has now mastered it.His reports and eagle eye on member payments ensure a smooth function.

Michelle MacGregor, our webmaster, is rarely seen by members due to her full time work commitments.

Carol Wilson, has been a wonderful recorder of the Committee meeting minutes, and co-ordinator of the highly valued tea ladies, making sure everything is on hand as and when required.Antoinette John, as Committee person has assisted in many areas with Carol

Wilson, especially at our Christmas party.

Finally, myself, as President, after three years in this role I anticipate stepping down for someone else to take my place. I enjoy the BMUG Group, but strongly feel it is time for another person to lead the group. I do not want to force the issue by resigning from the group, but I might have to do so,unless someone is willing to put their hand up for the role.Under Victorian Consumer Affairs rules BMUG MUST have a President, Secretary and Treasurer.

Without people to fill these roles, the group will have to be wound up.

The new hardware for iPads and iPhones plus the iMac, Macbook, and MacBook Air together with the evolving operating systems will keep us on our toes.Plus of course, changes to the way some programs work. Another new operating system is in the wings, if not already released by the time this Annual report is tabled at the Annual Meeting. All add constant refinement to what we present.

Member inputs have been a most valuable resource. One constant theme of our meetings is to keep it to the basics.

Socially we have had a meal with members after every second meeting, at local restaurants.

I trust that the BMUG Group continues on for many years to come. Peter Oakley President 2015/16

Does BMUG have a Future?I hope that members took note of Vice President Dick Brown’s plea at the last meeting for urgent assistance to keep BMUG afloat.

I am well aware of the fact that we have this same discussion at about this time every year, and in the past we seem to have been able to keep the Club active.

However, it is obvious to me that over the last few years the Club has only been able to survive mainly thanks to the efforts of three members.

Peter Oakley has held the position of President for the last three years and has also contributed by presenting many of the lectures at our monthly meetings.

Peter has indicated, that in the best interests of the Club he will not renominate for the position of President, but that he will make himself available for a position on the Committee.

I am well aware of the work that Peter puts in behind the scenes to help keep the Club operational. Although I am no longer a Committee member (having served for several years), I am in regular contact with Peter, almost on a daily basis on matters relating to the smooth running of the Club.Dick Brown has given his heart and soul to this Club over many years and I can sense from what he said at the last meeting that he is starting to become frustrated and is wearing down. I do not think that it is fair to expect Dick to continue at his present rate of involvement.

As well as being Vice President, Dick is the main presenter at every meeting. He also runs the Green Apples SIG at his home every fortnight.

Dick has indicated that he will not nominate for the position of Club President. At the time of writing this report, he has not yet indicated as to

whether he will nominate for a position on the Committee.

Where Does This Leave Us?We desperately need:

✦ A member to nominate for President;✦ More members to volunteer to present lectures or run SIG Groups;✦ More Committee members to lighten the workload.

As your Editor, I spend a considerable amount of time each month researching and compiling articles for the Newsletter.I do gain a great deal of pleasure from producing the Newsletter but I am frustrated by the lack of feedback from members as to what you would like to see in the Newsletter and also the lack of articles from members for inclusion in the Newsletter.

How Do I Control apps That Load On Boot-up?I have a few apps on my computer, particularly Games, that have been downloaded by other members of my family, to use when they visit.My problem is that when I start up my computer after a shut down, I have to wait for these apps to load up and then quit them.Question:Is there any way to stop these apps from loading at start up?Answer:The normal way that apps start up when you boot your Mac is as a “login item.” To see your Login Items, run System Preferences. Then click on “Users & Groups”. Then look for where it has “Password/Login Items” at the top and click “Login Items”.Anything listed there will launch when that User account logs in. The

checkboxes just mean that it launches “in the background.” What you need to do is to find the offending apps in that list, select them, and hit the button to remove them. Then they won’t run automatically anymore.If an app isn’t in that list then it means that the app is using some other mechanism to launch itself. You will most likely have to go into the app’s settings and find a shut-off there.

There is a better way to do this:

You should make use of multiple Users on your Mac.

If a member of your family is using your Mac on a regular basis, then they should create their own User Account and Password.Then, when they install an app it would only launch for them when they log into their account. They are then able to add apps, preferences, mail settings, bookmarks, create documents, etc., all in their account without interfering with your account. They log into their account when they want to use your Mac, and you log into yours when you want to use it.

If you really like a YouTube video and want to have it available even when there is no Internet connection available, Airy will help. This app allows you to save your favourite YouTube videos so that you can watch them whenever you so desire.In my opinion a good YouTube Downloader should have the following features:

• it should be fast and simple;• have the ability to choose format

and resolution for downloading; • have an intuitive interface;

• have batch URLs downloading support;

• have integration with browsers;• have built-in video converter;• it should be ad-free;• have the ability to extract original

audio from YouTube.Airy Version 3 has all of the above features plus the following new features-✦ The ability to log in on YouTube in order to download age-restricted and protected videos;✦ For playlists, an option to download each item in the best available quality;✦ YouTube channels support;

✦ Event notifications (via Notification Center).Plus: Improved: detection of available video formats.My Recommendation:This App is easy to install, is very stable, has a simple interface that works extremely well without you needing to think too much about how to download your video.An important factor is that I сan choose the resolution of the videos available.

Above all, this app is available at a very reasonable price.
