PILGRIM’S VISION STATEMENTThe vision of the Pilgrim Baptist Church is the fulfillment of God’s promise of salvation through the belief in the Ministry of

Jesus Christ and the empowerment of excellence in all people through Christian education and community activism.

Minister Kevin Lambert is the Minister of Children, Youth, and Young Adults at Pilgrim Baptist Church. Minister Kevon Hayes is his assistant. They also work with Superintendent Albara Morris, Deacon Chris Morris, and other youth lay leaders to ensure that our children are effectively discipled and developed for Christian service. Ministers Lambert and Hayes are redirecting the Youth Ministry.

The Youth Ministry will provide a fun and effective program that promote spiritual growth. By applying the fruit of the spirit, the youth will demonstrate love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, which is rooted in the joys and traditions of the church.

Youth Ministry and Young Adult objectives are to promote the four E’s:

Encourage: Youth and Young Adults to develop a relationship with God.

Engage: Youth and Young Adults with stories and activities, and real life experiences about God.

Enable: Today’s youth and young adults to be tomorrow’s world-changers for Christ

Excite: Youth and Young Adults to live radically for Jesus

Ephesians 4: 13-15 is the Youth theme scripture:

13 Until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,

Wednesday 6:30pm Youth meetings are planned for youth grades 7-12 years old. Wednesday meetings will reinforce youths’ lessons learned in Sunday School.

Ministers Lambert and Hayes appreciate this opportunity. If they ask for your assistance, please help all you can.

The seeds of faith have been planted because of Jesus: The True Superhero Vacation Bible School was a tremendous blessing for Pilgrim Baptist Church.

“Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11, KJV) Food, fun and fellowship was had by all involved with Vacation Bible School.

We had a great teaching staff that included: Rev. Jordan, Rev. Olson, Tomiko Ballard, Virginia Wynn, Vinest Steele, Giovanni Van, First lady Marilyn Board, Jacci Mannery, Noah Wheaton, Deacon Chris Morris, and Min. Kevon Hayes.

VBS Lesson Study topics: Worship, Witness, Praise, Protection, and Work Ethic.

Janet Mitchell and crew provided a delicious meal each night for VBS. Free Snacks were provided by a church member. The Reed family provided the Friday night meal for VBS.

Parnell Smith provided signage to market our Vacation Bible School to the community.

Over 50 participants were involved in VBS, with Wednesday night being the highest with 73 attendees.

Arts/Crafts was led by Lolita Pettigrew with Kameron Allen assisting. The kids had a great time utilizing their creative skills.

Vacation Bible School received a generous donation which resulted in each child receiving a devotional book to read over the summer. Pastor Board purchased devotionals for all the teaching staff.

Special recognition: I want to give Noah Wheaton a special “shout out” for teaching the Children’s Church group. Noah led with great teaching and passion. He is an up and coming young leader in the church. Pilgrim is grooming “homegrown” young leaders to do the work of the Lord.

Special thanks to Mia Rigsby for assisting me with VBS and the faithfulness of Deacon Erick Hall for locking up the church.

To God be the Glory!

MEETING NEEDS, SHARING CHRIST“WHO WILL DO THIS WITH ME?”

by Beverly Owens

For several years now, Pilgrim Baptist Church has continued an ongoing theme: “Meeting Needs, Sharing Christ - Who Will Do This With Me?” We liked it so much in 2013 that we just never changed it! This small declaration has led our church family to find a renewed zeal with a greater and much broader purpose. Each ministry at Pilgrim has begun to enlist not only each other in outside ministry efforts, but has solicited sources and entities outside of Pilgrim to not only provide opportunities but even “do this with us” through community projects that help those in need.

One of those persons who asked us to “Meet needs and share Christ” with them is the Northern Illinois Food Bank. This great food resource takes donations of canned and non-perishable foods, as well as meat, dairy, and produce items, ensuring that those who need them, receive them.

Pilgrim is thankful for Rev. Carmen Jordan who serves as our Minister of Missions & Outreach. She sought the needs and asked others to help her meet those needs. On Saturday, June 4, 2016, Rev. Jordan, Mia Rigsby and myself went to the Northern Illinois Food Bank. I was astounded at the fact that persons who receive food include those who work but because their income does not meet their family needs, they do not have enough to purchase food to feed their families. Many must make monthly purchases of needed medications, public transportation, expenses for children and schools, etc. Often they must decide whether they should buy food or medication. They can’t afford both. This is where the Food Bank comes to the rescue.

As volunteers, our job was to inspect each can in a HUGE bin filled with cans, determine if they were suitable to keep, place them in small containers, then take them to a skid of like numbered cans for distribution. Not a hard job for such a great reason! There were approximately 15 volunteers, some of which were unpaid volunteer supervisors who helped and answered questions. We were there for 3 hours that seemed like one hour because we laughed and talked while we worked. It was a joyful and fulfilling day.

At the end of the day, our supervisor came to let us know that based on what we all had accomplished by checking cans and loading skids, we contributed to providing food for approximately 1,600 persons! When I think of the time I waste vegging out in front of the TV, I was ashamed, yet thankful, for an eye-opening experience and a chance to make a difference. Pilgrim’s Missions Ministry has several opportunities lined up in the near future where we each can help someone in need.

Please consider a small portion of your time to devote this year. You can check out those options by calling the church office at 815-968-4449, or seeing Rev. Carmen Jordan for more information. You are needed, so when you hear the question, “Who Will Do This With Me?” please consider saying, “I will!”
