Since 2005, Dole has been making the shift from tradi-

tional reciprocating compressor technology to scroll

compressor technology by incorporating Thermo King’s

MAGNUM® units into its fleet. The weight, temperature pull-

down performance and power savings of the MAGNUM wooed

the world’s largest producer of fresh fruit products from the begin-

ning. As fuel and energy prices escalated throughout the past few

years, the MAGNUM’s energy efficiency benefits became even more

significant. When the next generation of MAGNUM was made avail-

able in 2009, Dole was excited to improve its fleet even further by

adding 800 MAGNUM PLUS® units in early 2010. An additional 1,445

MAGNUM PLUS units were ordered in August 2010 by Dole.

In making its equipment procurement decisions, Dole worked

with Thermo King to conduct several MAGNUM PLUS® trials

that included banana controlled testing and International

banana shipments. The trials proved that Thermo King had

indeed improved upon the already-industry-leading MAGNUM

technology.

“The MAGNUM PLUS further complements Dole’s push for

innovation by providing even more energy efficiency, the

lightest unit weight and temperature control logic that offers

a stable supply air temperature—all of which are the most

impressive in the container refrigeration unit industry today,”

said Benjamin Mathews, director of equipment operations.

“Those were key factors in our decision to add the MAGNUM

PLUS unit to our fleet.”

Surpassing all reefers in the market today, the MAGNUM PLUS offers:

• The highest efficiency and power in the industry

• The lowest environmental impact

• The lightest weight

• The most advanced technology, yet simplest design

• The lowest box temperature

• The fastest pull-down

• The tightest floor spread

• The finest temperature control

“In ALL situations, the MAGNUM PLUS unit in standard mode

outperforms competitive units operating in power-saving

modes,” explained Dermott Crombie, vice president, Global

Marine Solutions. “MAGNUM PLUS simply looks after the

cargo, with the lowest energy consumption possible. There are

no cargo limitations.”

The new MP-4000 microprocessor controller on MAGNUM

PLUS is sleek, functional and features a unique graphical inter-

face with easy-to-navigate multi-lingual interactive menus. It

offers sophisticated performance and accurate temperature

control without cargo compromise. In combination with the

optimized airflow performance, the MP-4000 microprocessor

allows the MAGNUM PLUS to offer greatly-reduced energy

consumption. And with zero cargo limitations, accurate temper-

atures for all product loads is achieved, even extending down to

-40 degrees for high value, deep frozen loads.

Dole commissioned 600 MAGNUM PLUS units, as well as 300

MAGNUM units, between December 2009 and January 2010

for use in its Latin America-USA trade lanes. Dole ordered

another 200 MAGNUM PLUS units in early 2010. The additional

order of 1,445 MAGNUM PLUS units came in August 2010 with

commissioning commencing in September 2010 and running

through December 2010. These units will then be moved to

Central and South America.

To bring Dole personnel up to speed on the MAGNUM PLUS

and its enhanced technology, training sessions were conducted

in Costa Rica prior to the 2009 unit trials, and specific training

on the new MAGNUM PLUS fleet took place in Central America

and South America at various Dole service locations during

February, March, and October 2010.

“Training and service support are critical with every new unit

sale and to every Thermo King customer,” said Gino Ansaldi,

sales director and service manager for Thermo King. “Because

customer satisfaction is our primary goal, we provide the

training, spare parts availability and monitoring to ensure all

new products are running correctly and that customers are

comfortable in product operation. We are proud of our long-

term partnership with Dole and are excited to introduce them to

the latest in reefer technology, the MAGNUM PLUS.”

With these recent purchases, Dole will run more than 6,000

Thermo King reefers in its fleet in 2011.

Dole, with 2009 net revenues of $6.8 billion, is the world’s

largest producer and marketer of high-quality fresh fruit

and fresh vegetables, and is the leading producer of organic

bananas. Dole markets a growing line of packaged and frozen

fruit and is a produce industry leader in nutrition education and

research.

SuperFreezer cools to -60º C

Thermo King continually preaches the mantra that

colder is better. And it is true: all forms of biological

activity slow down, as the temperature drops, so food

retains its freshness and quality longer. Knowing this, Thermo

King launched its class-leading MAGNUM® with a -35 degrees

C capability back in 2003, and now the market is adopting the

MAGNUM PLUS® with a -40 degrees capability, even further

ahead of anything available in the market. Perhaps what is less

well-known is Thermo King’s SuperFreezer unit, which delivers

a true -60 degrees C set-point capability.

“This exceptional machine opens up some truly unique

opportunities,” said Dermott Crombie, vice president, Global

Marine Solutions. “Not too many people have experienced

-60 degrees C, even in the world’s coldest climates. But it is

standard inside our SuperFreezer!”

In order to preserve quality and reselling value,

high-value seafood has traditionally required

airfreight shipments to reach distant target

markets. This translates into very high ship-

ment costs and a large carbon footprint. It also

poses challenges when air flights are restricted,

a very real possibility as seen this past year with

the eruption of the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano in

Iceland. With airspace closed in many European

countries, fresh seafood deliveries were cut

off also.

Thermo King saw a better way, long before

carbon footprints became a fashionable topic

and volcanic eruptions posed such real air trans-

port challenges. In the late 1990s, the company

developed the SuperFreezer, and it has been, and

continues to be, a steady seller as it has provided

customers with another option. An option that

allows super freeze container transport that is more cost-effec-

tive than airfreight, less detrimental to the environment and

is uncompromising when it comes to cargo care. “Indeed, the

SuperFreezer’s extreme-low holding temperatures preserve the

‘just caught’ freshness, taste and texture,” said Crombie.

Super-frozen cargo can be loaded at -60 degrees C in Super-

Freezer containers directly from pre-cooling units and trans-

ported or stored for long periods of time. This keeps container

temperature fluctuations to an absolute minimum and brings

cargo to optimal temperature from the very beginning of the

cold chain.

Because of the super-low temperatures, fresh-tasting, high-

value cargo like sashimi-grade tuna, swordfish, sea urchins and

more can be enjoyed around the world. Processed or raw (whole

fish) cargo can be stuffed directly from fishing vessels through

superfreezing chambers, hence preserving value and quality for

a longer period of time.

“All of this contributes to reduced transportation

costs and environmental impact, while assuring

very high quality at final product destination,” said

Crombie.

The SuperFreezer features an easy-to-control

MP-3000a microprocessor for precise temperature

control, a powerful cascade refrigeration system

with dual scroll and reciprocating compressor, and

reasonable unit price and maintenance costs. The

unit is easily powered by Thermo King’s powerful

SG-3000 series of gensets.

Japan-based Interasia Lines, Ltd. (IAL) may be

considered a small-sized carrier, but its experience

and reputation for excellent customer service has

been rewarded with consistent customer support since

the company was established in 1967. IAL has grown

steadily and purposefully through the years—both with its

own fleet and partnering with others, all in an effort to effec-

tively respond to customer demands while strengthening and

stabilizing its service. And it is with that philosophy that the

company decided to add 100 MAGNUM PLUS® units to its

reefer fleet in 2010.

“Customer demands for lower hauling temperatures, greater

operational efficiency and tighter temperature control have

become more stringent, so we wanted to go with a proven

industry leader as we expanded our reefer unit fleet,” said Randy

Chen, chairman, IAL. “Thermo King, through its MAGNUM line

of products, is raising the standards for refrigerated container

technology. We wanted to provide these features with the

most environmentally-friendly solution, something that our

customers require in today’s marketplace.”

IAL primarily operates between Japan and China, Taiwan, HKG

Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia with its own vessels

or by chartering space from other carriers, Wan Hai being one of

them. Its reefer unit fleet included 123 20-foot and 247 40-foot

reefer containers prior to the additional 100 40-foot MAGNUM

PLUS-equipped containers were added in late 2010.

“Thermo King is excited to begin a relationship with IAL. This

long-time shipping line regularly transports both fresh and

frozen high-value seafood and fish, ideal products for the class-

leading MAGNUM PLUS unit due to its efficient pull-down and

steady temperature control, as well as its ability to cool down

to -40 degrees. Its multi-purpose capabilities are perfect for

IAL, which is focused on meeting a variety of customer needs,”

said Caesar, Yiu, sales director, Thermo King Global Marine

Solutions.

Appropriately named, UNIT45 is a company that concentrates exclusively on

the development, construction, financing and delivery of 45-foot

containers thatmeet the requirements of its clients and European

legislation dictating allowable length and width of road transport. With a focus

on the European inland, railways and short sea shipping, UNIT45 has worked tirelessly

on its 45-foot container solutions to ensure the legal modality in Europe. Based in The

Netherlands, UNIT45 has been a faithful intermodal Thermo King partner since 2004 and

currently has more than 2,000 Thermo King reefer units and 550 truck and trailer units in

its fleet.

“We believe in Thermo King’s products and service and have incorporated them into our

entire refrigerated fleet—both on land and at sea,” said MD Jan Koolen, managing director,

UNIT45.” We work closely with our colleagues at Thermo King to determine the best refrig-

eration models for our refrigeration solutions. It is a good partnership as both companies

are focused on finding and delivering solutions for customers.”

UNIT45’s container reefer fleet is constructed using an ideal combination of aluminum

and high-strength steel, making it extremely lightweight yet durable and affordable. The

fleet’s cooling system consists primarily of Thermo King’s MAGNUM® SL (Slim Line) and

the new MAGNUM PLUS® unit. “Besides the proven MAGNUM unit power, performance

and energy savings, the MAGNUM SL version allows the maximum 33 pallet loads per

45-foot container, optimizing our customer’s profits-per-load,” said Jan Nouwen, UNIT45

technical manager. The container reefers are finished on the inside with aluminum, with the

layout of the cargo security system being entirely to the customer’s specification.

The company’s focus on innovation transfers directly to a dedication to environmental

concerns, which plays a big role in the company’s container designs and equipment choices.

“This is another reason our MAGNUM line, with its low environmental impact, works

so well with UNIT45’s efforts,” said Edwin Bezooijen, field service and parts manager,

Built on Innovation and Foresight:

7Thermo King Corporation

Thermo King Global Marine Solutions. “It’s also the reason they are excited

about the new MAGNUM PLUS unit, which has built further on the popular

features of the MAGNUM unit. They have already incorporated more than

1,000 units into their fleet and we are working closely with UNIT45 to ensure

the MAGNUM PLUS is compatible with the 45-foot container design.”

UNIT45’s customer base includes ECS, Eucon, Mc Andrews, GE Fresh, JSV Logistics, and many more.

“More and more companies are turning to the 45-foot container as a means

of utilizing the many intermodal alternatives that exist, such as rail, barge

and short sea services,” said Koolen. “This is a direct result of continuing

high transport costs, the growing awareness of the environmental impact

of road haulage, and of course, the EU Legislation that despite challenges,

is non-wavering. Our 45-foot container with Thermo King’s refrigeration

technology can move seamlessly between the different transport modes

and offers almost identical loading capabilities when compared to standard

13.6m trailers. Plus our containers feature special corner fittings that ensure

their legality throughout the EU. We are committed to helping our customers

combat the many challenges they face to remain profitable, environmentally

responsible and legislation-abiding.”

Offering both a rental fleet and lease options, UNIT45 emphasizes innovation

at the highest level and the use of high-quality materials, aimed at boosting

the applicability of the 45-foot concept in practice. As an ‘intermodal inno-

vator,’ the Rotterdam company is the undisputed market leader within this

segment.

That’s UNIT45

Thermo King’s commitment to the Marine sector is

legendary. From the world’s first reefer container, way

back in 1956, to the most efficient reefers, and gensets,

available today, Thermo King continues to invest in the future,

and lead the industry forward.

Thermo King initially established its Marine reefer facility in

Suzhou, China in 2002. Situated close to both Qingdao and

Shanghai box production plants, it was an ideal location. Over

the years, its only downside involved space constraints.

In 2007, anticipating continued growth in the Marine sector,

Thermo King made a couple of strategic decisions. One was to

move to a purpose-built campus, close by, in Wujiang, China.

The second was to combine all the Marine equipment manu-

facture at that location. This meant moving all three product

lines, namely MAGNUM® and MAGNUM PLUS® reefer produc-

tion, SuperFreezer reefer production, and genset production,

all under one roof.

The plan was to move these product lines in stages over the

winter of 2009/10, not foreseeing that the global financial

crisis would be at its deepest at that point. Undaunted and

remembering the famous quotation, ‘never waste a good reces-

sion,’ Thermo King continued with its strategy. The result is

a 72,000m2 Wujiang facility with the internal covered space

equal to the size of nine football fields! Sitting on an 83 acre

site, there is room for the same size expansion again, should it

prove necessary.

What’s InsideInside the facility, the first business installed was Thermo King’s

Reefers product lines. The MAGNUM, MAGNUM PLUS, and

SuperFreezer units were in production first. The SuperFreezer

product is unique in offering -60 degrees C cargo care for very

high-value seafood, and is a very popular alternative to air-

cargo. It is also a more environmentally friendly way to transport

high value fish, due to its lower carbon footprint. Indeed, the

production volume of these highly-specialised units has been

greater in 2010 than in the past few years. See more on the

Superfreezer on page 3.

The genset production line was transferred to Wujiang soon

after, completing the truly one-stop-shop approach. With

Thermo King’s genset business booming since the second

quarter and now into the second half of 2010, this move proved

timely.

“The result is that a shipping line customer, or end-user, can

view the entire Thermo King Marine product range, in produc-

tion, during one visit,” said Dermott Crombie, vice president,

Global Marine Solutions. “This has proven very popular with

customers.”

The result is a 72,000m2 Wujiang facility with the internal covered space equal to the size of nine football fields!

China’s TOMCO Produce Group Company recently

obtained the GLOBALG.A.P. certification for snow

peas and sugar snap peas. GLOBALG.A.P is a private

sector body that sets voluntary standards for the certifica-

tion of production processes of agricultural (including aqua-

culture) products around the globe. TOMCO, a China-based

grower/processor and commercial trading/marketing develop-

ment company for fruits and vegetables products, can supply

its peas year round and has 120 farmable hectares, which is

good for 16,000,000 kg production throughout the year. The

company utilizes Thermo King’s patented Advanced Fresh Air

Management System, or AFAM+, which allows TOMCO to keep

its peas fresh for at least 12 weeks.

“This means that we can ship our peas worldwide via shipping

container, and customers still get good product quality and a

longer shelf-life,” explained Younger Liu, managing director

of TOMCO. “One of our Australian customers said that the

peas were still very good four weeks after delivery. We’re very

pleased with the AFAM+ technology.”

AFAM+ was first introduced in 2002 by Thermo King. The

product effectively manages the changes in oxygen and carbon

dioxide levels in a container when fruit and vegetables respire to

achieve the optimum combination without dehydration.

“AFAM+ effectively slows down product metabolism,” said

Pietro SONZA REORDA, global portfolio manager, Marine

Solutions. “When coupled with the industry-leading MAGNUM®

container reefer technology, AFAM+ is even more effective.

The MAGNUM controller can be programmed to delay the fresh

air vent opening, allowing the container’s interior temperature

to reach proper set point before the container is ventilated and

reducing pull-down time. Basically, because AFAM+ manages

the atmosphere so well, less heat needs to be removed from

the box by the unit. This means faster pull-down and less power

consumption, which translates into fuel and cost savings and a

reduced carbon footprint.”

TOMCO’s fields are in an environment with an annual average

temperature of 15-25 degrees C, which is very good for peas to

grow. TOMCO is also building a new pack house near the fields

so that they can pick the peas and put them into a warehouse

within 10-15 minutes, further extending shelf life.

TOMCO is also testing AFAM+ on asparagus. “We are now

doing tests on sea freight asparagus,” said Liu. “So far, the tests

have provided good feedback. Once validated, we plan to ship

asparagus worldwide as well.”

The GLOBALG.A.P standard is primarily designed to

reassure consumers about how food is produced on the

farm by minimising detrimental environmental impacts of

farming operations, reducing the use of chemical inputs

and ensuring a responsible approach to worker health

and safety as well as animal welfare. More information

can be found at www.globalgap.org.
