Principal’s Notes

Dear Parents and Friends of York Catholic High School,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! During this season of giving and receiving, the York Catholic student body is taking time to remember those in need. The Student Council placed a tree in the lobby decorated with donated hats, scarves, and gloves for the Catholic Harvest Food Pantry. The student

mission collection in the beginning of December included a financial donation of $464.00 toward the Diocesan relief fund for the tragic typhoon victims in the Philippines and we are currently conducting a toy drive in partnership with the Gurreri family to support the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey. Our students

continue to be a living example of the mission of the Catholic faith through their service and charitable donations.

The gift and talents of your children are something all of us at York Catholic have to celebrate during this Season of Advent. We are blessed to work with these fine young men and women and are looking forward to sharing the opportunity for a York Catholic education with other families like yours at our Open House

on January 12. Of course, our families are our strongest marketing tool. Please encourage your friends, relatives, and fellow parishioners to come see us at our Open House and learn what we have to offer. Your advocacy is always

appreciated. One other calendar item I wish to draw to your attention to is the next Byrnes Health Education Center presentation scheduled for Wednesday, January 22, at

6:30 PM. “Drugs 101” is a presentation that seeks to educate parents regarding current drug use practices among teens across the country. Last spring, we surveyed our student body regarding substance abuse. While our numbers were consistent or below national averages in terms of substance abuse

among our students, the data provided useful information to help us continue to educate our students about the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol. The survey did convey that alcohol is the number one choice among our student population

related to substance abuse. We also need to be mindful of the growing national trend of teens abusing prescription drugs. Please consider attending the presentation on January 22 for information regarding these topics. You are our greatest partner when it comes to preventative education for your children.

I hope you have some relaxing family time planned over the holiday break. Enjoy this well deserved time with family and friends. We look forward to seeing

you in the New Year. God Bless,

INCLEMENT WEATHER

Please listen to WSBA 910-AM, WARM103-FM, WGAL TV-8, or WPMT Fox 43 for school closings and delays. Parents can also check the YC website and/or our phone system at x75. Students from individual school districts are automatically excused if their school

closes and does not provide transportation to YCHS. The exceptions to this are Southern and Southeastern residents. The buses for these students follow York Catholic’s delay and closing schedule. Listen for the announcements regarding YC’s southern route buses.

CLASSROLL

Parents should check their student’s progress with assignments and grades on Classroll.com. This application provides a tool for increased communication with teachers and parents. If your child is out sick, please check his or her

assignments on Classroll so he or she may keep

up with schoolwork. Also, please remember that

the grades displayed for your student may not be the most current grade. Variables such as test or quiz scores not yet entered, test grades that may become higher after corrections, or class participation not yet calculated may affect your student’s final grade. Please be reminded that teachers need an adequate amount of time to properly correct papers and record

grades. Additionally, progress reports will continue to be sent through Classroll’s message center. Mid Term Exams will be posted on Classroll by January 3. If you have lost your login information or forgot your password, please contact Ms. Dougherty at 846-8871 x35 [email protected] or Mrs. Hand at 846-8871 x13 or [email protected].

6TH GRADE VISITS The 6th grade students from St. Joseph-Dallastown, St. Joseph-York, St. Rose of Lima, and St. Patrick schools will be visiting York Catholic on Tuesday, February 11. They will spend the day as a YC

student, meet their teachers, tour the building, and take their placement tests for math and language arts. Our current 8th grade students will have off on February 11. OPEN HOUSE We will host our Annual Open House and Science Fair on Sunday, January 12, from 12 noon to 2 PM. Prospective students and their families are welcome to take a tour of our school, talk with faculty, staff and students, view our students’ Science Fair projects, and enjoy some refreshments. Please share the flyer on page 6 with your friends! The snow date is January

19. If you have questions about Open House, please contact Heather Hoffman at 717-846-8871 or [email protected].

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

WEEK

Catholic schools across the nation will celebrate Catholic Schools Week January 26 – February 1, 2014. This

year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge, & Service.” According to the National Catholic Educational

Association President, Karen Riatsu, “The theme encompasses several concepts that are at the heart of a Catholic education. First, schools are communities—small families in their own right, but also members of the larger community of home, church, city, and nation. Faith, knowledge, and service are three measures by which any Catholic school can and should

be judged.” We invite you to celebrate Catholic Schools Week with us at York Catholic at the Catholic Schools Week Liturgy on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 10 AM in the auditorium. The students will also be holding a Talent Show on Friday, January 31 at 2 PM, in a special

assembly sponsored by the Student Council. ONLINE COURSE REGISTRATION

Students will register for courses for the 2014-2015 school year online. Course selection begins February 3 and ends February 13 at 3 PM. Students will be

provided a login and directions for course selection. It is important that students follow the directions and meet the prerequisites for their selected courses. Students will not be scheduled for courses if they do not meet course requirements. Course descriptions will be located within the online course registration module for easy access. Students in 7th and 8th grade

will register during their computer classes with the assistance of their guidance counselor and computer teacher. More information on course registration will be provided to students in January. The week of February 3, students will be provided a printout of their registration for teacher approvals. Teachers in subject areas will approve and initial students’ choices.

The student will then bring this registration form home to be signed by parents. All signed course selection forms will be due back to the Studies Office by February 13 at 3 PM. Questions about course selections can be directed to your student’s guidance counselor or subject teachers. Updated course offerings with descriptions and

requirements will be posted under the Forms and Documents section of the YC website in early January. We encourage you to read through these course offerings.

ATTENDANCE REMINDER

Phone calls on the day of absence are required to explain the reason for the absence and a written note must be sent to the Attendance Office the day of return to school. Early dismissal notes should be in before 8:15 AM in order to notify teachers. All those

leaving for an early dismissal need to be signed out in the Attendance Office. If a parent allows a student to drive to an appointment, permission to do so should be included in the written note.

FAMILY VACATIONS

Please plan family vacations when your student

has days off from school. It is extremely difficult

for students to keep up in class and make up work when they miss school. In many instances, one week’s absence from school can significantly impact grades. Any student with an average of 75% or below will not be given permission to be out of school for any extended period of time. Reminder: Students are expected to return from any trip with work completed.

It is the student’s responsibility to schedule make-up tests. A maximum of 5 days of excused absences due to a family trip will be permitted each academic year.

BLOOD DRIVE IN HONOR OF MR. LEISER

Former science teacher, Mr. Stephen Leiser, always took pride in organizing YC’s annual blood drive. We

honor his memory by continuing the tradition he built. The blood drive is scheduled for Thursday, January 23 starting at 11 AM here at YC. Students age 17 and older may donate. Students age 16 may donate with parental signature. Please sign-up for a time in the nurse’s office.

DRIVER'S EDUCATION

The 30-hour Driver Education Classroom Instruction is being offered as a 10-class course on Tuesdays and Thursdays in January beginning January 7. Classes will be held from 3:15 PM to 5:15 PM in Room 107. The cost of the classroom portion is $100 for the classroom only or $200 for ONLY the behind the wheel training or $250 for both the classroom and behind

the wheel training which also includes the drivers test and the certificate for insurance discounts. Make checks payable to "Five Star Driver Training School." Classroom portion enrollment is limited to 30 students. Interested students in grades 10-12 may register in the office or download the form at www.yorkcatholic.org (forms & documents). For more

information, contact Mr. Trimmer at 717-968-7688 or [email protected].

CALLING ALL PARENTS!

The first planning meeting for the Post Prom Party is scheduled for Wednesday, January 8 at 7 PM in room 4, the faculty dining room. All are welcome to attend. If you have any questions, please contact Miss Hoffman at [email protected] or 846-8871

x20. We can’t have this event without your help! PROM ATTIRE Prom is scheduled for Saturday, May 3 at the White Rose Room at the York Expo Center. The following guidelines have been established to help make the

prom an enjoyable and memorable evening. All young men and women in attendance, whether a member of the York Catholic student body or a guest of a York Catholic student, need to be dressed in formal wear and must comply with the rules and regulations of YC and the YC dress code.

For Young Ladies

Gowns may not:

♦ Be shorter than two inches above the middle of

the knee

♦ Be extremely low cut front or back

♦ Have slits higher than the knee

♦ Have bare midriffs

♦ Have see-through material

Young Men:

♦ Must wear a suit or tuxedo

♦ Must wear dress shoes (sneakers are not

permitted)

♦ May not wear earrings

♦ Must be clean shaven

The York Catholic administration will be the final judge

as to what is appropriate attire. We hope students will use common sense and good judgment when choosing prom attire. Those who choose to disregard these guidelines will be asked to contact a parent the night of the prom to bring suitable attire. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact Mr. Keesey at 846-8871 x14. We look forward to an enjoyable and memorable evening.

JUNIOR HIGH GEOGRAPHY BEE

Numerous junior high students volunteered to participate in the annual Junior High Geography Bee scheduled for January 8 at 1:30 PM. The junior high attends the event which quizzes students on their general knowledge in United States and world

geography. Questions start off as multiple choice, but as the Bee progresses, students must come up with the answer. Each round of questions has a topic, like U.S. cities or geographical terms. At the end of the preliminary rounds, the top 10 scores move on to the final round. At this level, students are eliminated after they get 2 wrong answers, until we are down to 2 final

contestants. The final round questions are written and each contestant answers the same question. The winner represents YC at the Diocesan Bee in Harrisburg and takes a written test to qualify for the State Bee. Parents are welcome to attend the Bee on January 8.

DRUGS 101

Join us January 22 from 6:30-8:30 PM as the Susan P. Byrnes Health Education Center shows parents how teens are finding everyday items to use to support a drug habit. Find out the warning signs to watch for before your child develops a problem. This free presentation is made possible through a generous donation by Randy & Susan Byrnes. No registration

necessary.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT SCHOLARS Five recent graduates from the class of 2013 of York Catholic High School and one current student have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on Advanced Placement

MINI-THON

After last year’s overwhelming success with Mini-THON, York Catholic has decided to once again join the efforts of over 100 high schools, middle

schools, and elementary schools to have fun and work to conquer childhood cancer. This year’s Mini-THON will be held on March 15 from 4:30

PM to 10:30 PM. Based on Penn State’s successful THON, a 46-hour dance marathon, Mini-THON challenges students to stay on their feet for 6 hours while participating in activities such as Zumba, dodge ball, speedball, eating contests, and dancing. All student participants are required to submit a

permission slip and pay a $10 registration fee by February 7 and a $20 donation fee by February 28. All proceeds accumulated through the efforts of Mini-THON are donated directly to The Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital in Hershey, PA. Additional information regarding this year’s Mini-THON is available on the York Catholic website.

PING PONG SUPPLIES NEEDED The YC Ping Pong Club is in need of ping pong tables and nets for after-school activities. If you have a table or tables you would like to donate or loan, please contact Mr. Patrick McShane at 717-846-8871 x77 or [email protected].

SPANISH CLASS FIELD TRIP

Members of York Catholic's Spanish V class travelled to Washington, D.C. in November. Complementing a unit of study of Spanish art, the students participated

in a docent-led tour of Spanish artists at the National Gallery of Art. Following the gallery visit, the group enjoyed an authentic tapas-inspired Spanish lunch in the city.

PINK FOR OUR

SISTER YC students wore “Pink for Our Sister” on November 1 as a show of support for English teacher, Sister Gilmary

Beagle, who was beginning her course of treatment for a recurrence of cancer. Students were given pink bracelets at the end of the day as a reminder to keep Sister in their prayers on a daily basis. Cards for Sister can be sent to YC and we will forward them to her.

THEIR MISSION IS TO GIVE

BACK Spanish teacher and boys’ soccer coach, Milner Sosa, and his wife, Eileen, have made it

their life’s mission to give back to Milner’s home country of Paraguay through an organization they have

established called, “OutreachPARAGUAY.” This past summer, they took a group of 18 health care professionals to help provide educational activities in

schools based on the prevention and treatment of respiratory illnesses. They also distributed over 700 pounds of clothing and household items, and donated

News & Notes

countless books to a rural elementary school. They are already planning the June 2014 trip where the focus will be on diabetes education. Visit www.outreachparaguay.org for more details about

their work. York Catholic’s Spanish Club coordinated a collection among students to support the cause!

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT

Two local businesses generously donated a portion of the value of your purchases during the Christmas

season back to York Catholic. Thank you for doing business with Family Tree Farm and Hoss’s Restaurant. We appreciate your gift that keeps on giving!

IRISH SWEEPSTAKES It is time for the Irish Sweepstakes, and again, we are asking for your support and valuable time. The Irish Sweepstakes is one of the school’s vital fundraisers.

In order to ensure its success, we need volunteers. No special talents are required. If you are able to help, please complete the form below and return it to the school by February 28. As a thank you, a luncheon is planned for volunteers after the Drive. We thank you in advance for your tremendous and continuing support of YC.

Guidance Counselor. AP EXAMS

Students in AP classes will be receiving a notice about their AP test calendar and payments in February. The exams will be given on the following dates:

AP Chemistry Mon., May 5 8:15 AM

AP Calculus AB Wed., May 7 8:15 AM

AP English Literature and Composition Thurs., May 8 8:15 AM

AP Statistics Fri., May 9 12:00 PM

(mid-January through March) and addresses topics that are helpful to students whether they decide to go to a technical school, 2-year college, college, or pursue a career. Topics include: Job Search Skills, Interviewing, Why Benefits Are Important, Working with a Budget, Tips for Keeping a Job and Advancing, and more. A specialist will review these topics and provide a practical perspective about the working

world. Interested juniors or seniors should see Mrs. Hess in the Guidance Office for more information. COLLEGE VISITS Please check the policy on college visits on pages 28-29 in the student handbook. Any student wishing to visit a

college must obtain a college visit form from the Career Room or online. Parents should send written notification to the Attendance Office at least two days in advance. Two college visits will be permitted per year. Students are required to obtain work in advance. Failure to follow this procedure will result in a “non-excused” absence and teachers will not be required to

accept work. If a college visit is two consecutive days or more, students need to obtain a trip form.

COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID

Carol Handlan from Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) presented to York Catholic junior and senior parents on the topic of how the

financial aid system works. She provided us with her Power Point presentation and it is posted on our website for parents who were unable to attend. It can be found in the Guidance section at the top of the College Connections page. You are welcome to contact Ms. Handlan if you have questions. Her contact information is in the Power Point presentation.

JUNIOR GUIDANCE

All Juniors will receive their PSAT results beginning in December and are being seen by Mrs. Hess to review results and discuss course selection for senior year. Mrs. Hess will be helping juniors with career and college direction as well.

Juniors are encouraged to research after-high-school plans in the career room. February, March, and April are excellent months to attend college open houses and visitation days, usually held on weekends. Visitation permission forms must be taken along to be signed for our attendance office if visits occur on a

school day. Juniors should also be signing up for spring SATs and ACTs. This can be done online at www.act.org and www.collegeboard.org. Please use our high school code number 395445 which ensures score reports on transcripts. Also, listing possible colleges on SAT registration can save sending separate reports later

and limit extra costs. SOPHOMORE GUIDANCE

Sophomores have recently completed career exploration with Mrs. Loughman through the Bridges program. The sophomores have also received their results from the Explore test they took in October.

Please take time to look over the results with your child as they contain useful information such as possible career fields that are well suited for your child and tips on how to improve in academic areas where your child may have room to grow. Course selection will take place in February. Students

should start considering what courses they would like to enroll in for their junior year in January. Please take time to look over the course catalog with your child and discuss the course requirements in order to plan appropriately. Teacher recommendation will be the primary factor in determining which track and courses the students pursue in their main subjects.

FRESHMAN GUIDANCE

During January and February the freshmen class will be meeting with Mrs. Loughman in small groups to start exploring careers through the BRIDGES program. Students will learn what career cluster they fall into and be able to explore different careers suited for them based on their skills and interests.

EPIPHANY HOLY HOURS On Monday, January 6, from 11 AM-1 PM, the York

Catholic family will join together in the chapel to adore Our Eucharistic Lord to conclude the Christmas season. The Epiphany is the feast of the Magi visiting the Christ child, bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. It is celebrated as a "theophany" — the revelation of God to man. AMDG and Mrs. Krueger will be helping with

the Holy Hours. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK MASS On Thursday, January 30, we will mark our celebration of Catholic Schools Week with an all-school liturgy at 10 AM. Mrs. Weichert’s 8th grade class will be helping to plan this Mass and Fr. Jon will be the presider and

homilist. FIELD TRIP

AMDG and Mrs. Krueger will be leading a trip to visit the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Lord this spring. Please see Mrs. Krueger if you are interested in the trip.

All students may attend, but space is limited. If you have missed a class retreat, this trip would be a wonderful way to make up that requirement.

• PIAA Physical Form

• Athlete & Parent Agreement (last page of physical form)

• ImPACT Test

Students participating in spring sports MUST submit the paperwork to the athletic director no later than February 25. Luckman regarding the ImPACT Test.

Any student who played for a YC team or a YC/York Tech team in the fall or winter already has the required paperwork on file and is ready to play in the spring. Any student who was not on a fall or winter team but

believes all paperwork has been submitted should contact Mr. Luckman to be sure. Do not assume the required paperwork is on file.

The Mystical Rose Society is comprised of committed

individuals who, like the Patroness of York Catholic – Mary, the

Mystical Rose – dedicate themselves to answering the Lord’s

call to building the Kingdom of God through the education of

children. Realizing that today's young people are a precious

source of goodness, members of the Society support the

philosophy and values of Catholic education at York Catholic.

In the spirit of our Mystical Rose, our philosophy of education

leads young people to experience the love of God and neighbor

in a caring community, to understand their faith, and to

develop and use their intellects and talents in the service of

God and others. The Society was established as an

organization that requires an annual membership commitment

of one thousand dollars or more to any York Catholic fund.

For more information on joining York Catholic’s Mystical Rose

Society, please contact Jennifer Stees Glassmyer at

Purpose

For nearly 85 years, York Catholic has provided the best opportunity for a well-rounded, Christ-

centered education. Members of the Mystical Rose Society help York Catholic continue its tradition of

academic excellence and help accomplish its mission as a Catholic school. Providing quality programs

in a Catholic environment is a continual goal of our faculty and staff. The support of the Mystical Rose

Society helps to reach that goal with the following special objectives:

• To fund the Tuition Assistance endowment, the Forjan Focus Fund (teacher salary endowment), and

other school endowments

• To support special projects initiated by the school's administration for ongoing support to the

academic program including equipment needs

• To support the ongoing operational costs of the school in the areas where funds are most needed

Benefits

In addition to the personal satisfaction that comes from helping to preserve the York Catholic tradition,

Mystical Rose Society members also enjoy the following benefits:

• Members are remembered at the general intercessions during Mass in the months of October and

May

• Members are invited to the annual appreciation reception

• Members are acknowledged in the Annual Report published in Greensleeves

We know you understand the value of a Catholic education. We

hope you will consider becoming a member of the Mystical Rose

Society and help provide York Catholic and its students and faculty

with continued support.
