PMI Insights A publication for members of the PMI Chicagoland Chapter PMI Chicagoland Chapter P.O. Box 1183 La Grange Park, IL 60526 www.pmi-chicagoland.org Presentation Overview: Risk-Based Planning (RBP) improves the probabilities of project or pro- gram success. As a methodology developed by Praxis Life Sciences, the RBP process builds consensus around project expectations while effec- tively mitigating key timeline risks. This Praxis Life Sciences approach uses a modified wideband Delphi estimating approach combined with a Monte Carlo simulation. Following the method, a project team is able to rapidly progress to a schedule which the project team, senior management and sponsors understand and support. The presentation will focus on techniques to accurately define project scope for initiatives with limited starting definition. It will describe leadership skills and techniques for defining the project and influenc- ing senior management and sponsors. From a technical perspective this presentation will provide the tactics and techniques for develop- ing three-point estimates, using Microsoft project to run Monte Carlo simulations that estimate a realistic project schedule. Key Learning Points: Leadership – gain a better understanding of how Risk-Based Planning enhances team building through rapid “storming and norming.” Learn leadership skills and techniques related to influencing senior manage- ment and stakeholders. Strategic Business Management – learn tactics that lead to more thor- ough strategic planning, analysis and alignment. Increase knowledge of business models and structures to help teams work through the strategic planning process. Technical - learn about techniques to accurately define project scope for initiatives with limited starting definition. Expand knowledge of how to identify and mitigate risks prior to the start of a project. Discover more about the benefits of using Microsoft project to run Monte Carlo simulations and the benefits of working with three-point estimates. DECEMBER 2015PMI Insights

Volunteering is the backbone of the PMI organization The PMI Chicagoland Chapter values and appreciates each volunteer for their time efforts and expertise The Chapter Volunteer team will be running a series of Volunteer Spotlights to acknowledge and share individualrsquos perspective on volunteering with the Chapter and giving back to the profession This monthrsquos Spotlight is on Amy Martin who has served for 7 years in different volunteer leadership roles Chair PMI Chicagoland Executive Council for 3 years PM for 2012 PDDay event a number of speaking events PM for 2016 Region 2 Meeting and currently writing the standards for Organizational Project Management for PMI Global

The team had the opportunity to interview Amy Martin on the years of volunteer service and here are the highlights of the conversationhellip

Volunteer Team Why do you choose to volunteerAmy At first I got involved with the chapter to find amazing resources because I needed help I was attempting to build a PMO within a line of business which had never been done before and I was facing a mound of adversity I met amazing people like Helen Cook Steve Sawle Milt Haynes and others that embraced my need for knowledge This inspired me to do more in the project management community and help others in the way I was supported in my time of need

Volunteer Team Why is it so important to you to be a volunteer leaderAmy Bottom line it feels amazing Thatrsquos why I do it Helping oth-ers who are inspired to do great things and are driven to be the change agents for their organizations and communities keeps me inspired I want to do all I can to help these project leaders reach their poten-tial and make a difference In addition volunteering my time to build awareness of the value and benefits of project management will also strengthen the demand for this expertise Letrsquos be honest every organi-zation has projects every organization is in business to deliver prod-ucts andor services to their customers and every organization wants successful outcomes Thatrsquos where project management can be the differentiating factor for an organization to go from good to great Volunteer Team What is your most rewarding volunteer experienceAmy In general I get so much joy when someone comes up to me after

a presentation and says ldquothat really helped merdquo Thatrsquos my mission for every topic I deliver However there is one story that sticks with me vividly and itrsquos about volunteering my time as a mentor About 8 years ago a woman at work came to me and said ldquoI really want to be a project managerrdquo At the time she was a few years out of college doing requirements work for clients I was really inspired by her desire to learn and admired her clear vision I wanted to help so I gave her an assignment to build out the project management methodology and document it for the team She attacked this project and delivered a solution that is still in place today Through our mentor-ing sessions and the content of the project she learned the successful characteristics of project management This woman is now one of our top program leaders at Aon Hewitt and she just finished her MBA

Volunteer Team What suggestions would you offer volunteers new to the ChapterAmy Find your ldquowhyrdquo Why are you volunteering your time Find a ldquowhyrdquo that is personal Once you have this then you can choose the type of volunteer opportunities that align My initial ldquowhyrdquo was to learn how to build a PMO I needed to figure this out because I wanted to make a difference at my organization This led me to the Chair role for the Executive Council Then as time continued I volunteered to broaden my experiences and lead with people outside of my work envi-ronment In these experiences I have learned so much and enjoy helping to build the project management community

Volunteer Team If you had one volunteer wish what would it beAmy More people volunteering and giving it their all That may be two I was never one to follow the rules Letrsquos be honest our chapter is the 5th largest in the US and we have over 4000 members Can you imagine the difference our Chapter can make if we had more volunteers making it happen
