Regulation interoperability of spatial data sets and services
For the portrayal of spatial data sets using a view
network service shall be available:
(a) the layers specified in Annex II of Regulation
interoperability of spatial data sets and services
(b) for each layer
at least a default portrayal style
a human readable title of the layer to be used for display in user
interface;
the spatial object type o types that constitute the content of the
layer
6INSPIRE ConferenceJune 2012
Style and SD
Each Data Specification contains a section on “Portrayal”, where it defines the rules
for layers and styles to be used for portrayal of the spatial object types defined for
each theme.
For each spatial object type in the specification, a type of layer is defined for its
portrayal.
Layer Name Layer Title Spatial object type(s) Keywords

Style and SD
INSPIRE view services supports the portrayal of data, then:
it shall provide layers of the types.
it shall support the default styles
If no user-defined style is specified in a portrayal request for a specific layer to
an INSPIRE view service, the default style specified for that layer shall be used.
Layer Name AU.AdministrativeUnit
Style Name AU.AdministrativeUnit.Default
Style Title Administrative Unit Default Style
Style Description The administrative unit is rendered using a yellow f(#FFFF66)
fill.

All names are displayed in black, with font Arial 10pt, and located in order to touch the
geometry of the named place, at its centre if possible.

 Other points
There is no requirement in the Directive about portrayal,
but to guarantee that spatial data is portrayed in view
services, basic rules are necessary.
The view service according to the Directive
is not understood as a capability to create high-quality maps
but a capability to view the data.
10INSPIRE ConferenceJune 2012
 Other points
To reflect that proper cartographic visualization is out-of-
scope of INSPIRE, portrayal will at this stage only be
addressed from the perspective of a single theme only.
This means that generally it is not expected that cross-theme
issues are addressed in the data specifications.

 Other portrayal
In cases where no agreed/standardized style exists in a
community for the portrayal of a layer, the following three
simple styles (for points, curves and surfaces, respectively)
shall be used as default styles, which use the defaults
specified in the respective symbolisers of the Symbology
Encoding standard:
Point - grey square, 6 pixels
Curve - black solid line, 1 pixel
Surface - black solid line, 1 pixel, grey fill.
20INSPIRE ConferenceJune 2012
To conclude
Since is desired that view services provide harmonization
view about the data, the default style definition for each
spatial object type is essential. Therefore the portrayal
definitions developed by TWG has been very important.
However, the TWG should make an effort in order to
improve the quality of the symbolization and should study
cross-themes issues in details.
All DS can be extended the style defining not only a default
style but also a well-defined style
Thank you for your attention
