Welcome to the Stirling Silver brochure for February and March 2018.

We hope you like all of the events and outings included in this brochure.

Our program is very popular and unless indicated, bookings are essential. Please take the time to read through all of the details about the various events carefully.

The rating system is included to help you decide if the activity is suitable for you. If you have any questions regarding the outings and events, please speak to one of the booking officers.

We always welcome your feedback and ideas for future activities. Please speak to the program coordinator on 9205 7940 to share your thoughts.

Summerset Arts Festival 2018The Summerset Arts Festival is the City of Stirling’s premier cultural event, featuring 19 days of free and affordable entertainment for people of all ages across the community.

From Wednesday 24 January to Sunday 11 February 2018, the festival will transform the City’s parks, buildings and neighbourhoods into pop-up venues, creative spaces and hubs of activity. Jam-packed with comedy, music, circus, art, children’s activities and more, there’s something for everyone in this year’s program.

Celebrating the City’s unique lifestyle, diversity, heritage and culture, the festival is expected to attract more than 30,000 people to over 60 events around the City of Stirling.

Stirling Silver Rating system

Rating 1

Activity may require minimal physical exertion to:• Walk short distances at a leisurely pace• Walk on mostly even, flat surfaces• Minimal standing or steps• If travelling on the Stirling Silver Bus you must be able to negotiate foursteps to get on and off the bus unassisted.

Rating 2

Activity may require moderate physical exertion to:• Walk significant distances at a moderate pace.• Walk on moderately uneven and/or sloped surfaces.• Climb some steps independently.• Stand for periods of time up to 15 minutes

Rating 3

Activity may require a high level of physical exertion to:• Keep up with the group.• Walk long distances at a steady pace• Walk on a range of surfaces independently e.g. gravel, bush paths.• Manage flights of steps or navigating around obstacles.• Participate in planned water based activities.• Stand for long periods of 30 mins +

Crafternoons Day: TuesdaysTime: 1.00pm – 3.00pmCost: Gold Coin DonationCentre: Osborne Activity CentreDescription: Are you a ‘crafter’ who likes to socialise? Are you new to the area and want to

meet new friends? Come along to our regular Crafternoons sessions held at the Osborne Activity Centre on Tuesdays at 1.00pm. You will meet lots of friendly people who are keen to craft away on knitting, crochet, sewing or drawing and have a chat!

Notes: No need to book, just turn up and enjoy a cup of tea and a biscuit while you craft away!

Event: Twilight Movie – Moulin Rouge SSP015Date: Friday 2 February Time: 7.00pm – 10.30pmCost: $10Centre: Osborne Community/Activity Centre Description: Join us for an evening of ‘sparkle, spectacle and song’. First, enjoy a

complimentary drink in the sparklingly lit courtyard, before being transported into a spectacular world of artists, courtesans and the bohemian revolution. Take in Baz Luhrmann’s wonderful musical score while the sun sets and sample some wine and cheese before settling down to watch Moulin Rouge.

Notes: One alcoholic/soft drink is included in the ticket price and further drinks can be purchased during the evening. Cheese platters will be provided for the pre-movie drinks in the courtyard. As alcohol is available at this event, we respectfully ask that you observe the law relating to drink driving and get home safely. Please bring a cushion.

Outing: Day Trip to York SSP16Date: Tuesday 6 February Time: 8.00am – 4.00pmCost: $10.00Centre: Balga Community CentreDescription: Enjoy a day in York! Join a local guide for an interesting and informative tour as

we discover the history of Western Australia’s oldest inland town. Then spend some time wandering around town and maybe visit the museum, shops or just enjoy lunch or a drink at one of the local cafes.

Notes: There will be quite a bit of hopping on/off the bus, so it is essential you are able to move quickly to keep up with the group and not miss out on the guide’s commentary. Please dress suitably for walking in the hot weather and bring a water bottle. The group leader will advise you of the meeting time and place for the return journey. The bus will leave promptly at the advised time and if you are not at the meeting point you will be expected to make your own way back to the departure point at your expense. Please BYO picnic or purchase your lunch in York.

This activity is suitable for anyone who can walk at a moderate pace. It will include standing for long periods at various historical landmarks and there will be some steps. It’s anticipated that the weather will also be fairly warm. If you feel uncomfortable in very warm weather and being outdoors for sustained periods, please consider if this is the activity for you.

Event: Community Board Games Socials Date: Saturday 17 February & 17 March Time: 1.00pm – 8.00pmCost: FreeCentre: Bob Daniel (Inglewood) Community CentreDescription: Would you like to rediscover playing board games? Want to meet and socialise

with people of all ages who meet monthly and have fun reconnecting with some old favourites or learn new games. If you have your own games you’d like to play, please bring them along too. This session is intergenerational and we encourage you to bring your grandchildren (ages 7+) if they are old enough to take part. On your own? Come along, you’ll be made to feel very welcome.

Notes: This is a drop in session and runs between the advertised hours. There are no set ‘game’ times and its dependent on numbers attending. Come along for an hour, or stay all day into the evening. Please bring your own snacks and drinks. No booking is required.

This activity is suitable for anyone. It is a volunteer led project, so if you require special assistance please contact the course organiser for more information.

Outing: Swan Valley & Bells Rapids SSP17Date: Wednesday 14 February Time: 9.30am– 4.00pmCost: $15.00Centre: Bob Daniel (Inglewood) Community Centre Description: Start your journey with morning tea in the Swan Valley at the Maison Saint-

Honore Café. Next, we take in the unique Bells Rapids circuit walk trail which passes along the Swan River and is an ideal spot for you BYO picnic.

Notes: Morning tea is provided in the price. Please bring your own picnic lunch to eat at Bells Rapids as there are no food outlets available. The walk is self-guided, but you may wish to sit by the river and enjoy the setting.

If you wish to take the scenic walk, please be mindful that this is uneven ground next to running water.

those who like to socialise and make new friends. Bookings must be made in advance.

Outing: Gloucester Park Chinese New YearSSP19Date: Friday 23 February Time: 4.30pm – midnight Cost: $50.00Centre: Osborne Community CentreDescription: Enjoy a delicious Chinese buffet meal in the Beau-Don function room that

overlooks the track whilst watching the excitement of harness racing. Includes entry and race book. Celebrate Chinese New Year watching the fireworks after the last race.

Notes: Bring along money to purchase drinks and to place your bets. This activity has a very late finish.

This activity is suitable for all. However, there may be some restrictions to the areas you can access within Gloucester Park.

Outing: WACA Tour SSP20Date: Wednesday 28 February Time: 9.30am – 2.00pmCost: $20.00Centre: Scarborough Community CentreDescription: The WACA is the iconic home of cricket in Western Australia. Join us for a

guided tour around the museum and other areas not always open to the general public. After the tour, enjoy a BYO picnic in the nearby Queens Gardens.

Notes: This is a walking tour around the museum and grounds without many opportunities to sit down, please be mindful of that when booking. As with all historical sites, there may be stairs or steps to climb and we can’t guarantee that all of the tour will be suitable for you if you are unable to manage these.

This activity is suitable for anyone who can walk at a moderate pace. This activity involves standing for long periods and there will be some steps.

Outing: Shopping Centre Trip – Garden CitySSP21Date: Friday 2 March Time: 9.30am – 2.00pmCost: $ 5.00Centre: Bob Daniel (Inglewood) Community Centre Description: Bored with your local shopping centre? Would you like to see what another

centre has to offer without the hassle of parking? Join us for a shopping trip south of the river!

Notes: Please bring some money to buy tea/coffee and meal or BYO lunch. Rating 1

This outing is suitable for all, however there may be short periods of standing.

Outing: Sculptures by the Sea SSP22Date: Wednesday 7 MarchTime: 10.00am – 3.00pmCost: $10.00Centre: Balga Community Centre Description: Over 70 local, interstate and international artists transform the popular Cottlesloe

Beach into a stunning sculpture park.

Notes: This is not a guided tour around the exhibition. You will be expected to ‘explore’ on your own or with friends. It’s also an ideal opportunity to make new friends!. You will have plenty of time to buy lunch at one of the local cafes or BYO picnic to eat in a shady spot.

This is an activity suitable for all but to get the most of the exhibition, you will have to walk on loose sand on the beach.

Rottnest Day Trip SSP23Date: Tuesday 13 MarchTime: 8.30am – 5.30pm (plus drop offs)Cost: $55.00Centre: Pick-ups from Balga Community Centre and from Bob Daniel Community Centre

(Inglewood). Meeting point at Hillarys Boat Harbour (you will be advised at the time of booking, please see notes).

Description: Kick back on soft sand beaches, see marine life and meet the happiest little animal on earth, all on Rottnest Island. With 63 beaches ‘Rotto’ is a great destination for water sports, including swimming and snorkelling. The Explorer bus provides an easy and convenient way to explore the island. The bus loops around in 90 minutes and you will get an insight into the island’s cultural and historical heritage. You can hop on and hop off the bus at designated stops and make the most of your day out. There are plenty of food and drink opportunities close to the visitors centre or you can bring a picnic.

Notes: The cost includes a return ferry ride, but doesn’t include any bus tickets or bicycle hire. You are not permitted to take your own bicycle on the ferry on this occasion. You can make your way around the island at your own pace. Staff and volunteers will accompany you on the outward and inward ferry but once on the island, you have the option to do whatever you wish. The Stirling Silver bus will have two meeting points across the City to collect those who can’t make it to Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Passengers will be collected from Inglewood Community Centre at 8.30am promptly. Priority is given to those who live in Inglewood or Dianella. Numbers are limited.

Passengers will be collected from Balga Community Centre at 9.00am promptly. Priority is given to those who live in Balga or Mirrabooka. Numbers are limited.

Meeting point at Hillarys Boat Harbour is outside the ferry office no later than 9.30am. All staff will be wearing City of Stirling uniforms. Please identify yourself to staff when you arrive.

You will need to bring money to buy bus tickets or something from the cafes for lunch.

You will need to bring a towel and swimwear if you are going to take a dip.

We recommend you plan ahead for your visit so you can make the most of your time on the island. You will need to return to the agreed meeting place for the ferry back. If you fail to return to the meeting place in time, you will be expected to make the return journey on your own and at your own cost.

This activity is suitable for all, but is unassisted. You can enjoy the island at your own pace. If you don’t feel comfortable exploring on your own, please consider this when booking. Please be mindful that this is an island activity and is close to water.

Burswood Park Guided Tour & PicnicSSP25Date: Monday 19 March Time: 9.00am – 3.00pmCost: $10.00Centre: Scarborough Community CentreDescription: Enjoy a guided walking tour of the park, highlighting Western Australia’s history

and unique flora and fauna. There is also a heritage trail that takes you around the park, which features bronze sculptures of historic figures and tables. Maps and heritage trail provided.

Notes: Morning tea is provided. BYO picnic lunch. Rating 1

The park has public footpaths and is easy to navigate.

Booking Procedures

Bookings open Monday 15 January for City of Stirling residents. All bookings are made through Osborne Community Centre and are on a first come, first served basis.

At the time of booking you will need to confirm proof of residence and pay for your entire booking or multiple bookings.

Bookings can be made for a maximum of two people – each person must be a City of Stirling resident.

You are able to book over the phone, and pay over the phone, but you must submit a valid booking form within seven days to confirm your space. Payments can be made by credit/debit card at time of booking on (08) 9205 7940.

Priority is given to bookings made in person.

Bookings can be made in person at Osborne Community Centre, located at the corner of Royal and Main Street, Osborne Park. Payment can be made by cheque, cash or credit/debit card. The office is open from 9.00am to 4.30pm.

Due to demand, we are not able to reserve bookings without payment.

Bookings will open for non-residents on Monday 22nd January

Please note these important points for the 2018 Program:• Bookings are essential for all events apart from Crafternoons and Community Board Games

socials.

• Bookings can be made for up to two people, please staple the two booking forms together.

• Please ensure you thoroughly read all the details for any event you book, so you are aware of the venue, the start/finish times and what you need to bring!

• We recommend that for any event you are attending, you arrive 15 minutes before the start time and bring your receipt.

• Please ensure that you pay particular attention to the rating system. Often activities require a lot of walking or standing. There may be a lot of steps to consider or the activity specifically requires you to stay as a group. We suggest that if embarking on exercise for the first time in a while, you talk to a health practitioner first. If you are unsure whether or not an activity is suitable for you, please speak to a program coordinator before booking. As the Stirling Silver Bus has limitations to the amount of walking aids it can accommodate safely; you must consult with the program coordinator at the time of booking.
