Statutory Authority
• The authority of District and municipal courts to suspend or defer sentences and impose probation terms and supervision is found in Revised Code Washington (RCW) 3.66.067 and RCW 3.50.320. Continuing jurisdiction over suspended or deferred sentences for two years for most offenders and for five years for those convicted of DUI and DV, RCW 3.66.068 and RCW 3.50.330, pursuant to RCW 9.94A.535

Probation officer – core services
• Determine risk to the community using a standardized classification system with a minimum of monthly face to face interviews for offenders classified at the highest level.
• Evaluate offender’s social problems, amenability to different types of treatment programs, and determine appropriate referral.
• Supervise offenders with face to face interviews depending on risk scores.
• Oversee community agencies providing services required of offenders with input to the judicial officer (e.g. Alc/Drug, BH,DV,SD)

COMMUNITY SERVICE
• Community Service Program began in 1978.
• Offenders are placed at non-profit organizations/government funded agencies.
• All participants are screened for appropriate placement by the community service coordinator.
•Defendants earn $10.00 an hour toward their court fines and credit for 24 hours jail time for 8 hours of community service.
FOOD CONNECTION
WORK CREW PROGRAM
•Began in 1995 with an appropriation from the county council.
•District Court Judges refer defendants by court order for specific # of work crew days in lieu of jail time or to pay court fines.

WORK ASSIGNMENTS FOR WORK CREW
• Clearing creeks/ditches of overgrown vegetation, plant trees, general landscaping, hosing treatment tanks, cleaning defusers, washing vehicles.
• Cleaning, painting, moving and arranging furniture and office equipment, vacant lot clean up.
• Raking leaves, cleaning parking lots, clearing brush, grass cutting.
• Filling sandbags
• Pick-up trash and general cleaning of weigh-stations.
WORK CREW PROGRAM
•Crews operate 7 days a week. • Two pick up points
• 7:45 to 4:00 PM • Safety vests, goggles and
gloves are provided

Group Orientation is held one day a week & program fee of $35.00 is mandatory.
Credit for 24 hours of jail time is given for 8 hours on the crew.
$150.00 credit toward fines is given for 8 hours on the crew

DAY REPORTING PROGRAM:
The Pierce County District Court Probation Day Reporting Program was developed during 2000 as an alternative to jail that offers offenders practical living skills that are based primarily on a cognitive-behavioral treatment approach.

•Began in 2003 and works in coordination with the Sheriffs Department.
