The University of Skövde provides an effective learning environment which thrives at every level. We have an in-tegrated university offering program-mes of study at basic, advanced and research levels. Our students quickly discover that the content and struc-ture of their courses are very much a result of their own needs and wishes.
We have also designed programmes in close partnership with the business community. The positive learning envi-ronment is underpinned by the availa-bility of accommodation close to the campus, good communications and an extensive programme of cultural and social activities.
Our vision is to be a leading centre of learning in Sweden with our pro-minent research areas of Information Technology, Virtual Systems and Sys-tems Biology. With our established research programme in Information Technology, we are well on our way to achieving this vision.
I am keen to emphasise that the University of Skövde really is an inter-national community and workplace. We attract students and research sci-entists from all over the world and the University’s international popularity has continued to rise since its incep-tion in 1977.
The University of Skövde brings to-gether a long, academic tradition of knowledge and exciting new research, anchored in the real world. The upshot is a portfolio of completely new pro-grammes and courses that delve into a spectrum of relevant fields. Our Uni-versity prepares students for future careers as computer games developers, production and design engineers. It also offers a range of more traditional programmes including computer sci-ence, nursing and economics. All our courses share a strong focus on pre-paring our students for working life.
m O R E g R AD UAT E S g E T TI N g jO b S
Our graduates are attractive in the job market – a sign that their studies have prepared them well for the futu-re – this is largely because we design
new courses in response to the needs and wishes of the market . The de-mand for manpower must be strong and long-term.

There are numerous businesses of all sizes and levels in and around Skövde, ranging from small high-tech enter-prises to international industrial gi-ants. This provides excellent oppor-tunities for involvement in realistic projects and the chance to build a valu-able network of contacts for the future. The proximity to Gothia Science Park Incubator enables the implementation of ideas and creates a basis for the for-mation of new companies.
”The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

As you’ve probably realised, it is important for us to be firmly rooted in the real world. This applies par-ticularly to research. We want to find smart solutions for the future. That’s why we focus our research on the development and use of in-formation technology systems and models with applications within broad fields, from the production of crash simulation software for the automotive industry to analyses of information security in the health-care industry.

The University of Skövde has more than 10,000 students and about 500 employees. Everything you need is within easy walking distance on our compact campus where most of the student residences are located and the town centre is just around the corner. What’s more, we have Portalen right next to the campus. Portalen is a centre of research and innovation where researchers and the business community meet in a very special environment desig-ned to stimulate creative thinking and innovative approaches.
A university can only ever be as good as the people who work there. That’s why the staff is our most important resource. The University’s excellent, creative environment provides all em-ployees with the opportunity to deve-lop their skills and abilities.
We conduct in-depth research in a wide range of areas in collabora-tion with the business community. Our work with these businesses and industries, which are the future em-ployers of our students, serves as the foundation for continued growth and strengthens the University’s presence in the community. This allows us to in-crease the interest in the courses and research at the University of Skövde. And helps students feel welcome to come and study with us

Behavioural scientists and psy-chology coaches are experts at understanding how people function in different social contexts. We offer the chance to study everything from edu-cation and teaching to how the brain functions and how we are affected by our environment.
We have courses for those who wish to work with people and understand how individuals interact. Here at our university, you can learn the best way to lead individuals, groups and organisations. We offer you the chance to practice and deve-lop your ability to analyse and evaluate.
w HAT C AR EER PROS PEC T S wI l l YO U HAV E ?
Behavioural scientists will find career opportunities in a wide array of areas. You may decide to specialise in consciousness studies or study to become a psychology coach. You can use your expert knowledge of how people function in social con-texts to facilitate communi-cations and relations in com-panies and organisations. You could work as an HR developer, social welfare officer, project manager, product specialist, personal development coach and any number of other pro-fessions.
COgNITIVE SCIENCE PROgRAmmE
How do people think and interact with
one another? How can we achieve the right
balance in the interplay between people
and technology? This programme gives
students insight into issues like these and
prepares them for careers in designing and
harnessing the potential of technical pro-
ducts to ensure ease of use.
CONSCIOUSNESS STUDIES
– PHIlOSOPHY AND
NEUROPSYCHOlOgY
Here you become acquainted with a combi-
nation of philosophy and cognitive neuro-
science with a focus on consciousness.
You study the relationship between the
human body and consciousness, the rela-
tionship between the physical brain and
our thoughts, from both humanistic and
scientific perspectives.
Annika studied Social Psychology and complemented
her studies with courses in employment and con-
tract law as well as project management. With these
qualifications up her sleeve, she works as a Consul-
tant Manager for Manpower in Skövde.
Annika saw an advertisement for the position at
Manpower. Her first job role involved managing
applicants but one thing led to another and Annika
quickly worked her way up the ladder to her pre-
sent position.
“I am very grateful for the education I received at
the University. It has meant a great deal to me in
both my professional and personal life. I particularly
enjoyed the freedom that the programme offered.
That suited me perfectly.
Annika feels that the course of studies equipped
her with a solid platform in behavioural science.
Particularly as it allowed her to focus on the area
she was most interested in.
“I chose to specialise in human resource mana-
gement. Behavioural science is all essential when
working with applicants, colleagues and clients. It’s
very much about having a good basic outlook on
life and an understanding of other people - about
decoding what others really mean and why they say
and do the things they do.
“I knew almost from the start what I wanted to
work with. I think that’s benefitted me tremendously
in my studies and career. I knew what I was aiming for
and university helped greatly to guide me towards
my goals.
“My work as a consultantgives me freedom and enrich-ment in equal measure.””

He decided to study at Skövde partly because it was
close to his home town of Mariestad but the main
reason was its leading position in areas such as
automation and flow simulation,
“The course taught me to think and solve problems

I make great use of the photo editing and layout software
that we worked with on our course and I apply my know-
ledge of images, colour and design. I didn’t really realise
while studying that I would use all this later on because I
was focused on working in sound production. I am incredibly
pleased that I chose this programme. It’s been very useful
to me in my career so far.
“This course has opened many opportunities for me in my career.”

Gothia Science Park is like a binding agent be-
tween the research activities at the University
of Skövde and the market. The innovative
environment helps ensure that research find-
ings are transformed into practical solutions,
e.g. new products or companies.
From qu e stio n s an d pro b l e m s . . . .
New research ideas stem from a need for new knowledge
and expertise. A company may have a problem that needs
solving. Or a scientist asks an interesting question. Whichever
it is, the research work we carry out at the University of Skövde
focuses on society’s needs for knowledge, skills and expertise
and aims to produce results that will be of general benefit.
OUR RESE ARCH PORTAlEN gOTHIA SCIENCE PARK
Resulting in new knowledge From research to innovation Bringing research findings into the market
Our research activities focus principally on the development and use of informational technology systems and models. We specialise in three stra-tegically important areas within this broad field. Areas in which the surrounding community re-quire new knowledge, i.e. information technology, virtual systems and systems biology. In addition to these three specific research areas we conduct research in some other areas that are relevant to our courses, e.g. nursing, economics and research in teacher training.
I N FO R m ATIO N T EC H N O lO gY Here we focus on the development and
use of information technology systems. We have five research teams working
in the fields of artificial intelligence, cognitive science, distributed real time
systems, information systems and software systems.
Our three research centres:
VI RT UAl SYST E m S Here we develop and analyse the use of virtual worlds
and systems for a range of purposes. We have six research teams which focus on
the areas of logistics, automation, integrated product development, mechanics
of materials, games development and social psychology.
SYST E m S b IO lO gY The focus in this interdisciplinary field is on the integra-
tion of information from different levels to help us understand the functioning
of a variety of biological systems. We have five research teams working in the fields
of bioinformatics, ecology, molecular biology, tumour biology and physiology,
pharmacology and toxicology.
I N FO R m ATIO N F U SIO N – A U NIqU E R ESE ARCH PROgR Amm E
Researchers from all three of our centres come together
to examine how information from databases, sensors and
simulations can be integrated and used in decision-making
processes. Research is vital for companies, the Armed Forces
and areas of the public sector, such as the medical service.
Information fusion is the only research programme of its kind
at any Swedish university.
Portalen is designed for the creation of meetings. A place in which people, skills, research focus areas, methods and techniques can come together.
The building is divided into two huge sections covering about 5 500 square metres each. One of these accommodates the researchers’ offices and lab rooms for the University’s three research centres. The other houses Gothia Science Park

companies. There is plenty of space between these sections for the conference rooms and the constant meetings that take place in the centre. Quite simply, it’s a stimulating mix of entrepre-neurs, researchers and investors interacting in various ways to draw on and benefit from each others’ expertise.

N EEDS - O R I EN T ED R E S E ARC H
Our research is based on a need for new know-ledge and expertise, and it’s for this reason that we work in close partnership with the business community, constantly trying to identify cur-rent needs and effective ways of satisfying these needs. Consequently, our research findings are often used in practical life and are of use to the business community and society in general.
Did you get the butter out of the fridge this morning? Did you strap yourself into your car or did you catch the bus? We see the results of research every day often without thinking about it.
Adjacent to the University is a brand-new research and innovation centre called “Portalen”. It provides a setting in which the University of Skövde and Gothia Science Park can work collaboratively in a mutual exchange of knowledge and expertise between the University and the business community. The research conducted here helps companies to develop and the companies contribute by promoting the quality of the University’s research.
This is where good ideas are transformed into new products and companies, or companies that have been established for a while are stimulated to grow and develop. The aim of GSP is to create a long-term sustainable technology and research park that opens up opportuni-ties for students to embark on careers, entrepreneurs to start and develop businesses and researchers to put their findings to good practical use.
. . . TO I D E A S AN D D E V ElO Pm E N T. . .
Portalen is the daily meeting place for researchers and the busi-
ness community. It provides us with a forum where we can work
together on research problems and the development of ideas. As a
result, research becomes more focused on the companies’ problems
and the companies are able to develop their businesses based on
the new findings. We have a number of demonstration settings in
Portalen that we have developed to illustrate how our research
findings can generate growth for businesses and the community.

The University of Skövde offers its students ex-citing international exchange opportunities. The University has an exchange agreement with more than eighty universities around the world at reason-able fees. You are insured during your studies abroad and if you choose a university in a European Union country you will be entitled to receive a scholarship from the Erasmus programme which is for about EUR 300 a month. You can also study at other uni-versities as a Freemover student but you must be prepared to pay tuition fees.
Studying abroad is a great way to enrich and im-prove your learning experience – above all, you have the chance to explore new cultures, improve your language skills and build new contacts. Many em-ployers value overseas experience and you enhance your chances in the job market. Students returning from exchange visits testify to the value of spend-ing time abroad which contributes to greater self-confidence and personal development. THE STUDENT UNION
The Student Union at Skövde is managed and run by stu-dents for students. They work to ensure students are offered top-quality education, a more rewarding student life and more job opportunities after graduation. All students who are members of the Student Union can join in activities and have a voice in what the Union works for.
One of the Student Union’s main functions is to ensure that the University’s courses maintain a high level of qual-ity. They appoint student re-presentatives to act as the students’ voice in different bodies within the University. The Student Union is also re-presented when the University is discussing and making im-portant decisions and it has a strong voice that keeps a focus on the interests of the students.
I N T H E b E ST I N T ER E ST S O F T H E ST U D EN T S
Good health, a good learning environment and comfortable accommodation are three vital factors for ensuring that our students enjoy their time with us and are successful in their studies. The Student Union is involved in all social issues that affect students during their time at university.
FO CU S O N T H E FU T U R E
The Student Union helps to ease the transition from stu-dent life to working life by ar-ranging visits to companies, local authorities, career expos and by inviting students to its annual employment market day “Future”.
g R E AT ST U D EN T l I FE
What would student life be without a rich and varied so-cial life and recreational ac-tivities? The Student Union’s committees offer a great range of activities. Atlas2 is a dan-ce, song and satire committee, hifs is a sports committee, ic takes care of the internatio-nal students and the Rainbow students work to improve the situation for homosexuals, bi-sexuals and trans-gender per-sons.
Boulogner, the Student Union building, stands just a stone’s throw from the Uni-versity. It is regularly used for parties, meetings, lecture and seminars. It’s a natural place for students to meet up.
Enhancing student life
The Student Union Building “Boulogner” was built at the end of the 1800s. Since then it has been a hub of enter- tainment and gatherings. Today, it is constantly used by the Student Union for parties and meetings. In the background you can see the 18-storey student apartment building.
