Issue 9/2020 5 June 2020

A prayer for peace in the human family Creator God,

in love you have fashioned the human family in a variety of races, languages, and cultures.

Do not let our diversity divide us, but help us to welcome gifts

we can give and receive from one another. Save us from prejudice, arrogance and fear,

and teach us how to live together as members of one family,

sharing one home, and the children of one God.

Amen.

Trinity Sunday May the blessing of the

Creator who is the Source and Sustainer of life

Jesus who is the Lesson and Liberator of life and the

Spirit who is the Stirrer and Animator of life

be with each of us to guide and encourage, today and forever.

Amen

3 June 2020 Dear Parents/ Guardians, The purpose of this letter is to provide you with some updated end of year dates for our Year 12 students. Year 12 Graduation Dinner – Park Hyatt, East Melbourne The Graduation Dinner provides the College with the opportunity of formally farewelling the Year 12 students as well as celebrating their achievements.

Please take note of these key dates. As you would understand, we are unsure of the restrictions that will still be in place at this time of year which could significantly impact the number of people attending each event. We are hopeful that there will be a significant decrease in social distancing restrictions by that time which will enable family members and teachers to participate in these end of year events. It has been a difficult year for our 2020 Year 12 cohort, with many of their eagerly anticipated ‘final’ events unable to take place. They have been extraordinary in their acceptance of these disappointments and the manner in which they have positively moved forward. We look forward to celebrating their six years of schooling and acknowledging the enormous contribution they have made to the College over those years.

With best wishes

Sr Mary Moloney rsm Mr David Molino Principal Year 12 Wellbeing Leader

Visit to the Academy by Archbishop Peter Comensoli Archbishop of Melbourne

At his recent visit to the College in February, Archbishop Peter Comensoli launched the Make Your School Slavery Free resource. At the end of the launch, he indicated that he would be very pleased to return and engage in a discussion with our senior students about present day topics. We were thus very fortunate to welcome the Archbishop back to the College today to join in a dialogue with our Year 12 students during their Religious Education classes. Archbishop Peter met with the students via Google Meet and graciously spent 90 minutes with them.

Students appreciated his presence today and reflected with him on questions relevant to current day life.

On the 26 May Sherry Balcombe spoke to us as a year level about the importance of modern day prophets and their role in advocating for Aboriginal Australian rights. She told us that a modern day prophet is anyone who stands up as a voice in the wider community for the betterment of society overall. Past prophets have included Vicki Clark who started the Opening The Doors Foundation; Sir Pastor Doug Nichols, the first Aboriginal Minister; Aunty Joan Hendrick, a theologian; and Mr Paul Keating, former Prime Minister whose Redfern speech was highly thought of by Sherry. Sherry told us that we were all modern day prophets at one time or another. When we speak out against what we believe to be wrong, when we support justice causes, when we propose alternative solutions to problems and when we question the group we are acting as modern day prophets. Sherry told us that now, we as Victorians need to show the courage of the prophets who have come before and advocate for a treaty. As 'the political state', Sherry said we had the opportunity to lead the way on this issue. - Eloise Kenny 9 Barak Sherry Balcombe from the Aboriginal Catholic Ministry spoke to the Year Nines on Sorry Day (May 26) about the

importance of a treaty and what a treaty actually is as well as how we can give Aboriginal people the recognition they deserve. This would mean changing the date of Australia Day, the day that the land was taken from the First Peoples, Changing the national anthem to pay respect to those before us and changing the Australian Flag to recognise the First Peoples. The most important would be a treaty which should recognise the land rights of Aboriginal people and we were told how we can support and recognise this important idea. Most of us did not even realise the disrespect that is associated with these national symbols and we all have a much deeper understanding and respect for our First Peoples. In Religion we have also been focusing on modern day prophets. A modern day prophet for Sherry is anyone who

speaks out against injustice. She told us about both Aboriginal and non-Indigenous modern day prophets fighting against the injustices against the First Peoples. Sherry went into depth about so many inspirational stories of Indigenous people which was extremely interesting because some were familiar but many were not, and these people deserve to be recognised. A few of the Aboriginal modern prophets include: Joan Hendriks, Uncle Bob Randall, Boniface Perjert, Eddie Mabo and Aunty Marg Tucker. A few non indigenous modern prophets mentioned were former Prime Ministers, Mr Gough Whitlam and Mr Paul Mr Keating, singer Paul Kelly and the band Midnight Oil - Krissy Francis Class Justice Captain 9 Barak
