Editorial DeskDear Friends,
In today’s era we all are caught in tumultuous, frenzied spiral of chasing money, success, power
and a faster pace of life that imposes not only physical but social, mental and emotional burden
on us. Good health which is physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being is a fundamental
need of every individual.
Mental health is one important component of health that is often neglected. According to WHO
mental health is defined as “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own
abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and
is able to make a contribution to his or her community”. Mental health problems can affect
anyone regardless of age, gender or race. It is influenced by interplay between biological,
psychological, environmental and socioeconomic factors. Poor mental health poses a major
challenge to the community due to its debilitating effects. It causes low self-esteem, poor body
image, malaise, chronic stress and psychosomatic pain resulting in low physical activity leading
to obesity, hypertension, diabetes and other non-communicable diseases. The correlations
between poor mental health and an increased prevalence of musculoskeletal conditions,
multiple areas of pain, chronic and preventable diseases, emphasizes the need for an effective
and holistic multidisciplinary approach for the management of these conditions Physiotherapy
and mental health have been widely debated topic since ages. Physiotherapy plays a major role
in preventing and treating patients with somatoform, anxiety, obesity, depression, personality
and behavioural disorders. Exercise can improve anxiety, mood and depression by increasing
blood circulation to CNS and influencing hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis, moreover exercise
releases endorphins and monoamines leading to decreased negative mood. Exercise alleviate
symptoms such as low self-esteem and social withdrawal. Society is less aware about the
physiotherapy services and its role in mental health disorders.
The World Physiotherapy day 2018 comes with the theme “PHYSICAL THERAPY AND MENTAL
HEALTH”. It is a step to make the world aware about the role of physical therapy beyond
physical conditions such as mental disorders.
We have shared a small write up prepared by the WCPT on the occasion of world physiotherapy
day with the theme focusing on role of physiotherapy in mental health in this issue.

“Physical therapy and mental health” A briefing by WCPT
The campaign message of World Physical Therapy Day 2018 is “Physical therapy and mental health”, demonstrating the role that physical therapy and physical activity has in mental health. The campaign is focused around the following key messages.• Exercise as an evidence-based treatment for depression.• The role of physical therapists working with patients who may have mental health issues.• The benefits of physical activity in protecting against the emergence of depression.• How better outcomes are experienced when exercise is delivered by a qualified healthcare professional, such as a physical therapist.• How people with mental health issues are more at risk of having poor physical health.WCPT encourages member organisations and physical therapists around the world to use WCPT’s toolkit to convey these messages to the public and policy makers. These messages are important not just to encourage health and activity in populations. They can help demonstrate how physical therapists keep people moving through advice and exercise programmes.
About World Physical Therapy Day
World Physical Therapy Day is held every year on 8th September, the day WCPT was founded in 1951. It is a day when physical therapists can promote the profession, its work and:• Showcase the significant role the profession makes to the health and wellbeing of the global population• Raise the profile of the profession• Campaign on behalf of the profession and its patients/clients to governments and policy makers.
The day marks the unity and solidarity of the physical therapy community around the world. It is an opportunity to recognise the work that physical therapists do for their patients and community. WCPT aims to support its member organisations and individual physical therapists in their efforts to promote the profession and advance global health, using World Physical Therapy Day as the focus.
