BIBLE TRIVIA LAST WEEK: What do you think is the meaning of the thirty pieces of silver paid to Judas to betray Jesus? The price of this betrayal is only recorded in Matthew. It has its origin in Zechariah 11:12 where it is the wages paid to the rejected shepherd, a cheap price (Zechariah 11:13). That amount is also the compensation paid to one whose slave has been gored by an ox (Exodus 21:32). TODAY’S QUESTION: Who was Mary of Magdala, the first witness of the Resurrection?

REALITY CHECK/BASIC TRUTH

From the book by Steve Weidenkopf: “The Real Story of Catholic History: Answering Twenty Centuries of Anti-Catholic Myths.” MYTH: “Corruption in the Church was so bad that only something radical like the Reformation could fix it.” THE REAL STORY: “There is no doubt that the Church was in need of reform in many areas of its life in the sixteenth century, but the notion that it was so thoroughly corrupt that only a complete revolution could fix it is a Protestant myth aimed at justifying the Reformer’s cleaving of Christendom. The Church attempted to reform itself long before Luther and Calvin, but poor leadership from the papacy prevented the reforms from taking root. True reform comes from within, and seeks to preserve what is good. Revolution is an external action that aims at destroying an institution and creating something wholly new. The leaders of the Protestant movement in the sixteenth century were revolutionaries who sought the complete destruction of the Church—but they failed, because the Lord promised that the gates of hell will never prevail against it.” (pp. 161-62)

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION With the temporary suspension of public Masses, the faithful are unable to receive Holy Communion. Here is a prayer from EWTN to use for An Act of Spiritual Communion: “My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.”

RESPECT LIFE NEWS

Quotes from Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), encyclical of St. John Paul II issued in 1995.

This quote is appropriate for the many good people who are doing so much during this current coronavirus epidemic: “Furthermore, how can we fail to mention all those daily gestures of openness, sacrifice and unselfish care which countless people lovingly make in families, hospitals, orphanages, homes for the elderly and other centers or communities which defend life? Allowing herself to be guided by the example of Jesus the ‘Good Samaritan’ (cf. Luke 10:29-37) and upheld by His strength, the Church has always been in the front line in providing charitable help…” MAY THE LORD WATCH OVER US AND PROTECT US. MAY HE DELIVER US FROM THE CORONAVIRUS AND KEEP US SAFE AND HEALTHY. AMEN.

ST. MARY’S “LIVE-STREAMED” MASSES St. Mary’s will have a live-streamed Mass each Sunday at 1:00pm throughout this time when public Masses are suspended.

CONFESSIONS

Since the churches must remain closed, Confessions will be suspended until further notice.

In the meantime, here are words of wisdom from the Holy Father during a homily on March 20: “People who cannot get to confession because of the coronavirus lockdown or another serious reason can go directly to God, be specific about their sins, request pardon and experience God’s loving forgiveness.” The Pope continues: “You do what the Catechism says. It is very clear: If you do not find a priest to hear your confession, speak to God, He is your Father, and tell Him the truth.” Enumerate your sins, ask the Lord for forgiveness with all your heart, and make an act of contrition, the pope explained. “Promise Him: ‘Later I will confess, but forgive me now.’ And immediately you will return to the grace of God.” The Catechism states that perfect contrition, “remits venial sins; it also obtains forgiveness of mortal sins if it includes the firm resolution to have recourse to sacramental confession as soon as possible.” Imperfect contrition, which is based on the consideration of sin’s ugliness or the fear of eternal damnation or other punishment, is also a gift of God, however, it is not enough to obtain the forgiveness of mortal sin without sacramental confession to a priest the Catechism explains. One can then make Sacramental confession when the crisis ends.

WE THANK SO MANY COURAGEOUS MEN AND WOMEN WHO ARE DOING SO MUCH DURING THESE DIFFICULT TIMES AND WE PRAY FOR THEM: DOCTORS, NURSES, MEDICAL RESEARCH, FIRST RESPONDERS, POLICE, FIREFIGHTERS, GOVERNMENT LEADERS, TEACHERS AND STAFF WORKING FROM HOME, PARENTS, CHILDREN, GOOD NEIGHBORS, AND SO MANY MORE. THESE ARE DIFFICULT TIMES, BUT IT IS INSPIRING TO SEE MANY “STEPPING UP TO THE PLATE” AND DOING THEIR PART.

KNOW YOUR SAINTS

St. Julius I (d. 352), April 12. Son of a Roman named Rusticus, he was elected Pope to succeed Pope St. Mark on February 6, 337. Julius was soon involved in the Arian controversy when Eusebius of Nicomedia opposed the return of Athanasius to the see of Alexandria in 338. Eusebius and his followers elected George, whereupon the Arians elected Pistus. Julius convened a synod in Rome in 340 or 341 that neither group attended, and in a letter to the Eusebian bishops, Julian declared that Athanasius was the rightful bishop of Alexandria and reinstated him. The matter was not finally settled until the Council of Sardica (Sofia), summoned by Emperors Constans and Constantius in 342 or 343, declared Julius’ action correct and that any deposed bishop had the right of appeal to the Pope in Rome. Julius built several basilicas and churches in Rome and died there on April 12.

LLETTER FROM MONSIGNOR KEN It’s Easter but this year it feels more like Good Friday: “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Rather than the usual scene of a Church filled with parishioners and their families joyfully gathered, we have locked doors and empty streets. How can this be? Where is God? Doesn’t He hear us? Indeed, we find ourselves in scary times. Even though those feelings are real, my faith remains strong and I have undying hope. On Good Friday, all seemed lost. The apostles did not understand and they were afraid. We are blessed to know what they didn’t know on that dark day - that Easter was coming. Even though circumstances this year seem to have delayed the final outcome, the resurrection is coming. Just like the devil couldn’t keep Jesus in the tomb, God will win. New life will be upon us! My hope is more than a simple Pollyanna optimism. One reason is my belief in the great American spirit. My parents, as you know, were part of the Greatest Generation. One of their challenges was the Great Depression and that lasted from 1929 into the 1930’s. In the midst of its overwhelming difficulties, there were so many stories from those years of acts of kindness and generosity of neighbor helping neighbor. That same goodness is happening today. Some of you remember the devastation of Pearl Harbor. We were taken by surprise and knocked back on our heels. Americans again rose to the occasion. Every corner of this great country mobilized and joined the effort – and we won. As the Japanese Admiral Yamamoto aptly noted, “we have awakened a sleeping giant.” I see the same today. So many people are doing so many things, it gives me hope for what lies ahead. Were people afraid in those days? Of course, but they didn’t give into it or let it overwhelm them. As President Roosevelt stated in his first inaugural address in March 1933, “The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.” These are different times; we have new generations; and the enemy we face is a virus not an army. But we are the same great nation, and the spirit of that generation lives on in all of us. While that great American spirit gives me great hope, my deepest source of strength is my faith. I am a baby boomer and my generation faced very different challenges. One of those was the struggle for civil rights. One of the anthems for that movement is a powerful expression of faith and so appropriate for today. That song is “We Shall Overcome,” and was performed by several artists. The first stanza is an expression of hope to fill our hearts this Easter Sunday: “We shall overcome, we shall overcome; We shall overcome someday; Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, We shall overcome someday.” That anthem is based on a Gospel song written in 1900 by an African American Methodist Pastor, Charles Albert Tindley. That original hymn was titled, “I’ll Overcome Someday.” There are many performances of both this and its more recent version. I encourage you to check them out on youtube and give yourself an Easter boost. As a prayer for all of us today, I want to share the full lyrics of the original version: This world is one great battlefield, With forces all arrayed; If in my heart I do not yield I’ll overcome some day.

I’ll overcome some day, I’ll overcome some day, If in my heart I do not yield, I’ll overcome some day. Both seen and unseen powers join To drive my soul astray, But with God’s word a sword of mine, I’ll overcome some day. I’ll overcome some day, I’ll overcome some day, But with God’s word a sword of mine, I’ll overcome some day. A thousand snares are set for me, And mountains in my way; If Jesus will my leader be, I’ll overcome some day. I’ll overcome some day, I’ll overcome some day, If Jesus will my leader be, I’ll overcome some day. I fail so often when I try My Savior to obey; It pains my heart and then I cry, Lord, make me strong some day. Lord, make me strong some day, Lord, make me strong some day, It pains my heart and then I cry, Lord, make me strong some day. My mind is not to do the wrong, But walk the narrow way; I’m praying as I journey on, To overcome some day. To overcome some day. To overcome sone day. I’m praying as I journey on, To overcome some day. Tho many a time no signs appear, Of answer when I pray, My Jesus says I need not fear, He’ll make it plain some day. I’ll be like Him some day. I’ll be like Him some day. My Jesus says I need not fear, I’ll be like Him some day. And, if you’re still not sure, let me end with the second stanza of, “We Shall Overcome:” The Lord will see us through, The Lord will see us through, The Lord will see us through someday; Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, We shall overcome someday. Happy Easter! “When Peter saw this, he addressed the people, ‘You Israelites, why are you amazed at this, and why do you look so intently at us as if we had made him walk by our own power or piety? The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, the God of our ancestors has glorified His servant Jesus whom you handed over and denied in Pilate’s presence, when he had decided to release Him. You denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. The author of life you put to death, but God raised Him from the dead; of this we are witnesses.’” (Acts 3:12-15)
