Every year 6.5 billion kilowatt hours

are wasted on parking garage

lighting – that amounts to over

$2 million a day, $730 million a year.

Philips Wide-Lite’s innovation award winning VizorLED and value driven

QLP parking garage and under canopy luminaires coupled with LimeLight’s

ZigBee based wireless control system provides the ultimate lighting solution

for today’s demanding and challenging markets.

Integrating LimeLight wireless technology into our industry leading LED parking and

under canopy products creates a high-density mesh network of communication between

luminaires that can ultimately be managed from any remote location. In turn we maximize

energy savings, streamline facility management and maintenance, enhance safety and

emotional experience within the space, all while reducing total cost of ownership.

Building the case

for LEDs and

dynamic controls

Putting a stop to energy

and illumination waste

Millions of dollars and a tremendous amount of energy

is wasted on parking garage lighting annually. It’s wasted

because luminaires are operating 24 hours a day, 365 days

a year. LED luminaires utilizing controls makes it easy to be

proactive versus reactive in reducing energy consumption.

As a result, over six and half billion kilowatt hours of

energy is wasted each year in parking structures alone.

Conservatively, a typical parking structure is only occupied

with traffi c 30% of the time. This means energy is wasted

for two thirds of the day by continuously running your

lighting at full output. Controls and dimming allow you to

save energy during unoccupied periods.

Utility rebates and

tax incentive programs

Many utility companies nationwide have instituted financial incentives for employing energy efficient light sources and controls towards existing and new construction facilities. LED luminaires coupled with controls are your highest rebate potential. In addition to utility rebates, parking structures are covered under EPAct 2005 deduction energy saving incentive for lighting and building efficiency. 1

Increases in electricity rates and

legislation initiatives

As our nation continues to face historic economical and environmental challenges, the need to conserve energy has never been greater. When specifying controls with Philips

Wide-Lite’s LED parking garage luminaires, customers are

better equipped to react to increases in kilowatt rates, load

shedding, and economical demand responses set forth by

local and federal energy legislations. Waste not, want not.

References:1. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management and Incentive Programs. 2. Title-24 and DesignLight Consortium. 3. U.S. Energy Information Administration

1 A significant tax deduction may be available under EPAct 2005 for an energy saving lighting. Parking garages qualify under this program as interior spaces. Contact your Philips Wide-Lite representative or visit http://lightingtaxdeduction.org for further details.

“With lighting controls, building owners and

operators benefi t from a more valuable,

effi cient facility. The environment benefi ts

from fewer construction-related impacts

and the decreased ongoing demand for

natural resources.”

Extend and sustain

LED performance

When specifying controls with Philips Wide-Lite parking and under canopy LED luminaires, the predicted LED life and reliability increases compared to luminaire confi gurations without controls. Increased life means less maintenance, and less maintenance equals a lower cost of ownership over the life cycle of the luminaire.

Preserving our

natural resources

Adopting the use of LED lighting and controls systems in your outdoor space can substantially decrease energy consumption to promote a greener self image by signifi cantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, LED luminaires contain little to no IR or UV elements, and are mercury and lead free for ease of disposal and recyclability at end of life.

“We’ve worked with communities to create smarter cities with sustainable parking garages, with colleges and universities to provide safe, well-lit environments, and with contractors to build “green” garages that previously were unimaginable. At the end of the day, the team at LimeLight and Philips is about developing smarter solutions that support our vision of a better world. We take this responsibility personally, and consider it a privilege to serve the planet well through LimeLight.” -TwistHDM/LimeLight

LimeLight’s wireless controls system has the ability to adjust light

levels according to ambient light conditions and as a result, dim

or deactivate perimeter facing luminaires to provide additional

energy savings opportunities. The units will remain at a lower

light level mode until natural light levels decrease to the point

where electric light contributions are once again required.

Daylight harvesting helps to maximize both energy savings and

extend fi xture operating life.

The LimeLight system has 4 daylight settings: Light

harvest high, medium, low, and “sleep” mode. Each mode

is commissioned on-site during the initial set up. If future

adjustments are needed, modes can be changed from the

web using LimeLight’s on-line graphical user interface portal.

A unique feature to LimeLight is its ability to utilize the

gateway’s internet connection to obtain local temperature

readings. Every 30 minutes, our “Temperature Guardrail”

program monitors changes in ambient temperature

conditions as the weather fl uctuates during the day.

Should outdoor temperatures reach extreme levels,

LimeLight controlled luminaires can be programmed to

decrease drive currents and light output to preserve the

life of the luminaire and its electrical components.

This is ideally suited for higher

ambient climates or for when

mother nature decides to bring

Enhance fixture and system

reliability for your customers

and reduce maintenance costs

Because you can view your facility’s lighting status

from any remote location, maintenance has never

been easier. The system will e-mail or text you

directly in the event of a power outage, fi xture failure

or drop in light levels. System outages and sudden

drops in illumination can be tracked immediately to

individual fi xtures. As a result, maintenance issues can

be automatically diagnosed before a repair crew is

dispatched. No more guessing or costly spot checking

to ensure peace of mind that your facility is 100%

operational and safe.

Measuring activity can

improve energy efficiency

LimeLight tracks energy usage by groups, fl oors

or individual fi xtures. The beauty of the system

allows owners to evaluate energy consumption

by generating daily, weekly and quarterly reports

using the on-line reporting tool. This feature allows

users to modify light level presets and scheduling

events straight from the web. Furthermore, when

conducting daylight harvesting and occupancy

activity analysis, wattage reduction calculation

and opportunities for further adjustments can be

verifi ed with real-time data feedback.

“The wireless controls system tracks

energy usage, dims fi xtures when there

is no activity or in areas of strong natural

light, and provides the kind of real-time

data that garage owners need.”

Ensuring safety at every turn A group of lighting fi xtures illuminate to full power as soon as customers

enter or exit your facility, providing a safe and inviting visual experience year

round, and a sense of security like never before.

With a motion sensor in every fi xture, LimeLight safeguards the entire garage - ensuring

that if a customer enters or exits your garage at any time, the system will light the way.

Fixture grouping allows an entire row or fl oor to illuminate once motion is detected

from an entry point. As cars exit the facility, the fl oor below will illuminate ahead of time.

Patrons will experience a seamless and 100% uniformly illuminated space, unaware of the

controls behind the scenes.

Furthermore, LimeLight provides real time monitoring of the system with diagnostic

feedback to notify facility managers of any equipment failures requiring maintenance, along

with detailed activity reports to see fi rsthand when the garage is quiet and when it is busy

– allowing you to tailor the system around your facility’s specifi c schedule.

www.wide-lite.com11

Leveraging the intelligence

of the system via the web

Event programming is as

easy as 1, 2, 3

LimeLight’s wireless access allows users to set up

multiple program events to accommodate activities

such as maintenance, manual, reactive and high

occupancy level schedules. If you need to override your

active schedule for holidays, sporting events, or other

special occasions, simply log on to the portal and create

a specifi c event program. Again, all in real time without

having to manually reprogram in the fi eld. The regular

scheduled event will resume automatically the next day.

Manage and monitor fixture

groupings in real time

LimeLight’s grouping tool provides tremendous

fl exibility with up to 50 fi xture groups per gateway.

Group the entire fl oor or individual rows to provide

full line-of-sight views for your customer in the evening

hours, or group the entrance areas to keep fi xtures at

maximum light output regardless of the time of day.

The fl exibility and control is yours. After initial

confi guration, you have the ability to change and update

individual fi xtures and groups as required. Thanks to

the wireless communication, changes are done in real

time and from the ease of your computer. No need to

manually reprogram each individual luminaire in the fi eld

like other traditional standalone or wired installations.

LimeLight’s graphical user interface (GUI) is truly the power of the

system enabling you to manage your entire parking garage facility

lighting via the web. Every fi xture has its own MAC address so

owners can check the status of a single fi xture and any fi xture can be

interdependent or independent in terms of grouping. The GUI is a web

based tool that can be accessed straight from the internet, requiring

no additional software installation. Each user will receive a unique user

name and password to access the LimeLight user interface. There are

fi ve levels of access to ensure that the owner, building operator, or

security manager can access only the information they need.

LimeLight’s GUI allows you to control light levels and operate in large or small zones, or by multiple fl oors to best suit your parking garage’s needs all in real time without having to reprogram each fi xture in the fi eld like traditional control systems.

Scheduling special events and adjusting light levels are easily achieved directly from your computer on-site or by remote web access.

www.wide-lite.com 12

Eliminate the ‘popcorn effect’ of single luminaire dimming control

Although widely accepted, individual fi xture control is true line-of-

sight, which means each luminaire is brought to high output only when

motion is detected. This creates a visual domino or ‘popcorn effect’ as

a patron makes their way through the space.

Thanks to LimeLight’s ability to easily create fi xture groups or lighting

zones, patrons will never see any change in illumination levels and will

always be in a fully illuminated space until exiting the parking structure.

Eliminating the undesirable domino or popcorn effect to create a

seamless, safe and inviting visual experience.

After the patron has safely exited the garage, the previously activated

zones gradually dim back to their low state as long as no additional

occupancy is detected. This time delay can be easily programmed

to specifi c settings to further ensure safety and security as well as

maximize energy saving potential.

A parking patron enters the third fl oor to retrieve their vehicle, illuminating the entire fl oor upon entering

As the patron exits the garage, the luminaires on the next level illuminate to full power before the vehicle makes the turn

The ability to perfectly calibrate the facility throughout the 24-hour cycle is the true power of the system. In balance with the substantial energy savings, the safety of the parking patron is also a key driver in the development of the algorithms. Our ability to ignite an entire fl oor to full light output with clear line-of-sight visibility is a key feature of the LimeLight system. - Pat Burel, Director of Technical Services at TwistHDM/LimeLight

Understanding LimeLight’s wireless technologyLimeLight is a web-based system that operates through high density mesh (HDM) wireless technology. The diagram below

demonstrates how all of the components of our wireless system work together to create a true mesh network. The system starts

with the web based graphical user interface (GUI), which is accessed to view fi xture status and to manage the luminaires in the

parking garage. All of the commands to the system go through the central LimeLight database, which receives information from the

LimeLight Gateway and checks the status of every fi xture.

3. The customer fi rewall

The internet connection to the gateway is

provided by the facility owner or operator.

The system pays strict observance to

customer’s security and fi rewall rules.

Complete remote technical support

capability is provided.

2. Central LimeLight Database

The central LimeLight database is based on

an M2M platform - a proven, secure, and

reliable store-and-forward messaging

protocol. All activity within the LimeLight

system is captured in the database for easy

retrieval and reporting – which can be

directly accessed through the GUI.

1. Graphical User Interface (GUI)

The Graphical User Interface (GUI) is a user-friendly,

web-based tool that requires no special software on your

personal computer. Each user is given a unique user login,

password, and defi ned level of access. Within the GUI, users

can create groups, edit profi les, set up events, and adjust

light level settings in the facility straight from the web.

You can also generate reports to track the system’s activity.

For enhanced security, alert notifi cations can be set up via

e-mail or cell phone.
