Christmas Fast Begins

For any work well done, preparation is the key to

success. In this spirit, in the Christian-Orthodox order, the

great feasts are usually preceded by a preparatory period.

As the Lord shows us, the spiritual battle is done through

fasting and prayer. On the evening of November 14, that is,

of St. Philip the Apostle, we enter the Fast of the Nativity.

Although it is long, it lasts until the evening of December

24 and is a feast of joy, being much lighter than Easter

Lent. During Lent we are urged to refrain from eating

meat, dairy and eggs, but especially from sins! Significant

days with a red cross have a fish release. During this

period, the Church calls us to restrain ourselves from

parties and to focus on reading the Bible, to live our lives

by repenting through Holy Confession, and to draw closer

to God by participating in the Holy Liturgy and receiving

His Holy Body and precious Blood of Christ. The

improvement of our life will entail: love of neighbor,

altruism and doing good, but especially deeds of mercy.

The essence of this period is our preparation in

anticipation of the Birth of the Son of God, which we

relive. Therefore, we will read the messianic prophecies

and honor the Mother of God, who represents deified

humanity.

In this pandemic, in order to come to the aid of our

believers, we will have Akathists and a confession

schedule on some Wednesday evenings and Friday

mornings, as well as Saturday, after Vespers. I urge you all

to renew your intimacy with Christ by receiving the Holy

Sacraments.

So, this fast has been appointed for all of us. Let us strive

to live it with spiritual benefit! After we renew our souls,

let us also receive Christ in the cave or in the Bethlehem of

our heart!

Începe Postul Crăciunului

Pentru orice lucru bine-făcut, pregătirea este cheia succe-

sului. În acest spirit, în rânduiala creștin-ortodoxă marile

sărbători sunt de obicei precedate de o perioadă pregătitoare.

Așa cum ne arată Domnul, bătălia spirituală se face prin post

și rugăciune. În seara de 14 noiembrie, adică de Sf. Apostol

Filip, intrăm în Postul Nașterii Domnului.

Deși este lung, acesta durează până în seara de 24 de-

cembrie și este un post de bucurie, fiind mult mai ușor decât

Postul Paștilor. În timpul postului suntem îndemnați să ne

abținem de la mâncăruri de carne, lactate și ouă, dar mai cu

seamă de la păcate! Zilele însemnate cu cruce roșie au dezle-

gare la pește. În această perioadă, Biserica ne cheamă să ne

înfrânăm de la petreceri și să ne concentrăm pe citirea Bib-

liei, să ne întreptăm viața pocăindu-ne prin Sfânta Spo-

vedanie şi să ne apropiem de Dumnezeu participând la

Sfânta Liturghie și primind Sfântul Trup și scumpul Sânge

al lui Hristos. Îmbunătățirea vieții noastre va atrage după

sine: iubirea față de aproapele, altruismul și facerea binelui,

dar mai ales a faptelor de milostenie.

Esența acestei perioade este pregătirea noastră în

așteptarea Nașterii Fiului lui Dumnezeu, pe care o retrăim

aievea. De aceea, vom citi profețiile mesianice și vom cinsti

pe Maica Domnului, cea care reprezintă omenirea îndumne-

zeită.

În această pandemie, spre a veni în ajutorul credincioșilor

noștri, vom avea Acatiste și program de spovedanie în unele

Miercuri seara și Vineri dimineața, precum și Sâmbăta, după

Vecernie. Vă îndemn pe toți să vă reînnoiți legătura cu Hris-

tos, primind Sfintele Taine.

Așadar, postul acesta a fost rânduit pentru fiecare dintre

noi. Să ne străduim să-l trăim cu folos duhovnicesc! După ce

ne vom înnoi sufletește să-L primim și noi pe Hristos în

peștera sau în Betheemul inimii noastre!

the Holy Sacraments of Baptism, Chrismation

and Eucharist last weekend in our church, by

Fr. R. Grama. Sunday, received her first Holy

Communion. Her Nașa was Irina Bălan.

Though she is already known as a volunteer for church activities,

De ce aprindem lumânări?

Încă din Vechiul Testament lumina și

lumânarea au reprezentat o parte din cultul

religios al Templului. Ea este o expresie a

adorării și un dar pe care îl aducem lui

Dumnezeu. Biblia ne spune că la rugăciunea

din fiecare seară, Marele Preot, Aaron, va

aprinde lumânări și va arde tâmâie, iar aceasta

“se va face de toate neamurile, pururea” (Ieșire

30,8). Levitic 24, 2-3 menționează că acestea vor arde

înaintea Domnului “până dimineața”. Continuând

această rânduială sfântă, creștinii proveniți din evrei au

continuat cu dragoste acest obicei sfânt, atât în vremea

Noului Testament, cât și după aceea.

Lumina lumânării, pe lângă caracterul ei practic, are

un simbol profund biblic. Psalmul 41,35-2 spune: “Întru

lumina Ta vom vedea lumină”. Iisus Însuși spune: ”Eu

sunt lumina lumii” (In. 8,12) și, de asemenea: ”Am venit

în lume în lumină pentru ca tot cel ce crede în Mine să

nu rămână în întuneric” (In 12, 46). De fiecare dată când

aprindem o lumânare, ea ne bucură sufletul și ne aduce

în legătură spirituală cu Dumnezeu, la care ne înălțăm și

noi inima.

În viața creștin-ortodoxă nu se poate concepe rugă-

ciune fără lumânare; atât la Liturghie, cât și la toate

celelalte servicii divine. Prin numărul brațelor, chiar și

candelabrele, au un adânc simbolism religios, care ne

duce cu gândul la Sf. Treime (3), la un Dumnezeu (1), la

darurile Duhului Sfânt (7) sau la Sfinții Apostoli (12).

Prorocii și Evanghelia prezintă pe Hristos ca pe “o

lumină mare.” De aceea, de fiecare dată când aprindem

o lumânare, să o facem cu bucurie. Prin gestul nostru,

noi luminăm lumea cu rugăciunea, așa cum spunem la

Sfintele Paști: “Lumineaza-te, luminează-te, Noule

Ierusalime, că slava Domnului peste Tine a răsărit.”

Așadar, cu fiecare lumânare aprinsă, noi intrăm într-

o comuniune de crez, dragoste și suflet cu Domnul,

precum și cu cei cărora le împărtășim gândul nostru cel

Why do we light candles?

Since the Old Testament the light and

the candle represent a special aspect of the

religious life of the Temple. It is a gift and

an expression of our adoration offered to

God. The Bible tells us that the High Priest,

Aaron, was supposed “to light candles and

burn incense” and that “this is be done by

all nations.” (Exodus 30,8). In Leviticus 24,2-3, we find

that these shall burn before the Lord “until morning”. In

the New Testament, the Christians descended from among

the Jews kept practicing this afterwards as a holy custom.

Besides its practical character, the light of a candle has

a profound biblical character. The Psalm 41,35-2 says: “In

your light we shall see light”. Jesus Himself says: “I am the

light of the world” (John 8,12) and, also :”I have come into

the world as a light that all who believe in Me may not

remain in darkness” (Jn 12, 46). Each time we light a

candle, our soul rejoices and its light brings us in spiritual

communion with God before whom we lift up our heart.

Orthodox Christian liturgical life, from Liturgy to other

divine services, cannot even be imagined without a candle.

The candle holders have their own symbolism,

especially by the number of their arms. For instance, if it’s

one arm it reminds us of the one God; three remind of the

Holy Trinity; seven of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and

twelve, of the Holy Apostles. The Prophets and the Gospel

describe Christ as “a great light”. When we light a candle

we rejoice in God. By this gesture, we enlighten the world

with our prayer, exactly as we pray at Holy Pascha: “Shine,

shine, O New Jerusalem, for the glory of the Lord shone

upon you”. In conclusion, with every lit candle we enter

into a communion of creed, love and soul with the Lord

and also with those for whom we pray.

Christmas Fast Begins

If we are lovers of Christ, let us receive Him, become like

Him, proclaim Him to others, and especially cling to the

Christian "family" of the local church. I call on those who

are Baptized to become active supporters of the church. For

this, announce your good intention, then, ask for the

blessing of the Parish Priest to receive you in the Romanian

Orthodox family in this area. One of the saints of the

Church tells us that "no one can have God as his Father

unless he has the Church as his mother."

I wish you all a blessed fast and spiritual fruits! I'm

Începe Postul Crăciunului

Dacă suntem iubitori de Hristos, să-L primim, să devenim

ca El, să-L vestim altora și mai ales să ne alipim “familiei”

creștine a bisericii locale. Chem pe toți cei Botezați să

devină sprijinitori activi ai bisericii. Pentru aceasta, anunțați

-vă buna intenție, apoi, cereți binecuvântarea Părintelui

Paroh ca să vă primească în familia ortodoxă română din

această zonă. Unul din sfinții Bisericii ne spune că “nimeni

nu poate avea pe Dumnezeu ca Tată, dacă nu are Biserica

drept mamă.”

Vă doresc tuturor un post binecuvântat și cu roade

THE TEMPLE (November 21)

When the Virgin Mary

was three years old, her

parents Joachim and

Anna, decided that it

was time for them to

fulfill their promise to

God. Joachim called for

several other girls to

escort the Virgin Mary

into the Temple. Each

one of them was

carrying a lit lamp to

light Mary’s way and

give her strength so that

she would not change

her mind and turn back.

Upon arriving at the Temple, the priest greeted, kissed,

and blessed her. Then he said to her:

God give His Grace to the Virgin Mary. The people of

Israel loved her. This is how the Virgin’s life began at the

Temple. She lived there like a dove, being fed by the hand

of an angel of the Lord.

The Most Pure Virgin Mary remained at the Temple

until her early teenage years.

40th Anniversary of Episcopacy.

A New Meditation Site

Last Year, when the

parish paid homage to the

30 years of service of our

current parish Priest, the

Parish Council decided to

dedicate a granite bench

in his appreciation. The

idea has evolved and the

area around the column of

the Most Pure Virgin

Mary, in front of the

school building, has been

enhanced with a cement

patio.

The old overgrown

shrubs have been then removed and, finally, the project

comes to an end. Father suggested that other clergy, who

served our parish well be also honored. When this will be

done, three granite benches will be etched in honor of the

following clergy who shepherded our parish for three

decades each: Fr. John Trutza (1928-1954); Fr. Vasile

Hatgean (1955-1982) and Fr. Remus Grama (1989 - pre-

sent). This new meditation station enhances the parish’s

cultural complex. The cost of the project was already cov-

ered by generous individual donations. The next step is

for our volunteers to finish the electrical installation for

the illumination of this symbolic monument.

If you did not know yet, the marble column was

brought from Romania to the World’s Fair in New York

(1939). It was sculpted by the well-known Romanian

sculptor Militza Patrascu. Once brought to Cleveland,

originally showing the image of King Carol II holding his

son, King Michael, has been reshaped into the image of

the Mother of God holding the Lord Jesus Christ. So, the

column has become emblematic for this Cleveland church.

Above the base-relief of the Mother of God stands the

royal crown of Romania, that ever reminds us of our

origins. This historical monument is often admired by

visitors and it certainly invites to prayer and introspection.

Cleveland-Romanians love their history and culture and,

above all, their church. We hope our faithful will visit it

and pray before it and, particularly, teach the younger

generations to love their church, faith and history.
