A Note from Sally Anderson As we go to press with this issue in mid-April, we hold hope that some of our programs and activities will resume in the coming months. But there is, of course, no guarantee.

One thing we can guarantee is that we care about your well-being and are here for you! During this unprecedented time, we have found new ways to stay connected and support older adults and families throughout our community. We have offered ways to stay engaged through Daily Activities that can be found on our website. Our staff and volunteers have created a sense of connection and caring by making check in calls and delivering groceries, prescription medication, and other essential supplies to older adults and families in need. And, thanks to the generosity of our neighbors, we have collected gift cards and donations to help purchase essential items needed by so many during this uncertain time.

We recognize that social distancing is difficult and hope that you will be uplifted by the stories and future activities you find in this newsletter.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you need support or are looking for a way to support others. We invite you to stay current with program and activity updates on our website at www.CommmunityThreadMN.org or by calling us at 651-439-7434.

Hope to see you soon!

Thrive: Building Upon What Matters Most Since its inception, Community Thread has recognized the importance of connecting people to enrich lives. In more recent years, we have begun to explore options for harnessing the neighbor-helping-neighbor nature of our community to ensure older adults and others in need can live vibrantly. As we have mentioned in previous issues, Thrive at Community Thread is a new program that will be offered as a membership-driven network, making independent living a bit easier as our community ages. During the COVID-19 crisis, several activities of Thrive have been swiftly and temporarily put into action to meet the time-sensitive needs of our community. These activities include buddy or check-in calls, coordination of online social activities, rides to errands, and shopping and delivery of essential goods. Though some structure and refinement of Thrive is still necessary, the crisis has shed a light on the most important needs that arise in our community - needs that will not simply disappear even when the crisis does. Thrive at Community Thread will be dedicated to leveraging resources and volunteers to meet our community needs at all times. Thrive will not only ensure good mental health and well-being by fostering connectedness and support for those who need it most, but will build upon the response to the COVID-19 pandemic to help our community be more resilient for whatever challenges the future brings. Thrive encompasses much of what Community Thread already does to serve our community, but will formalize, expand and elevate our work to create a sustainable solution that addresses long-term needs for those who wish to remain independent. Stay tuned for more information. Questions? Contact Rachel Presslein, Director of Thrive 651-439-7434 or [email protected]

Flood Assistance Available for Homeowners Community Thread is supporting Emergency Response throughout Washington County again in 2020. This year, our role will include assisting with volunteer recruitment efforts for homeowners in need. Support for homeowners will be provided on a first-come first-serve basis and is based on volunteer availability. Homeowners must provide all supplies needed (i.e. sand, sandbags, shovels, etc.) and proof of homeowners insurance. Every homeowner requesting help from flood volunteers must complete a Request for Services Form.

From the California mouse mother who has to kick start her partner's paternal instincts to Adelie penguin parents who can't leave their eggs alone for five minutes, we see just how far these incredible parents go to protect and nurture as many offspring as possible through to adulthood.

Chore Services & Transportation News 20

Volunteers Help During COVID-19 During the recent Stay at Home order, many of our chore services and transportation volunteers went above and beyond to continue their support. Some made phone calls to other volunteers and continued with tasks such as data entry (from home). Others made check in calls, assisted with a chore or offered a ride to an older adult who they have helped in the past.

No matter the service, these extra acts of kindness meant a lot - especially during such challenging times.

About our program...

The Chore Services and Transportation Program connects older adults and adults with disabilities to trained volunteers who assist them with home maintenance tasks and door-to-door rides to medical appointments.

Assistance may be available on a one-time or ongoing basis. Some of the chore services tasks that volunteers perform include light housecleaning, minor home repairs, lawn care and other projects to help people age in place. Transportation to medical appointments varies from once a year trips to the doctor for an annual exam to weekly physical therapy appointments.

Volunteer with us…

Over the past three years, there has been an increase in the number of people who need help with home maintenance projects and rides to medical appointments.

Volunteers are needed to meet these needs. Share your time and talents to help others stay independent in their own home.

“Thank you to all the drivers who help when

I need to see one of my doctors

or go to physical therapy.

The drivers are all special people.

I know that I can always call the office and

ask for a ride. It gives me peace of mind that

I don’t have to worry about getting to my

medical appointments.”

- Alice, Transportation Recipient Oak Park Heights

Meet Fred Anderson

Fred Anderson has served on the Community Thread Board of Directors since

2017 and currently serves as Treasurer. Prior to volunteering with Community

Thread, Fred worked as an infectious disease epidemiologist for Washington

County Department of Public Health and Environment for nearly 32 years.

As you can imagine, this background has been invaluable to Community Thread

as we have developed response plans to keep our staff, volunteers and

participants safe during the coronavirus outbreak.

As a second term board member, Fred shares:

“After retiring, I wanted to stay active and continue to contribute to the overall health and vitality of our

community. My involvement at Community Thread has given me deeper insight into how the organization

makes a difference and has fulfilled my desire to have a deeper commitment to a local nonprofit that improves

lives.”

Fred and his wife have lived in the Stillwater area for over 32 years. They have two grown daughters. He is an

avid sea kayaker and outdoors person. Thank you Fred for all you contribute to Community Thread and your

deep commitment to our work!

Thank You & Farewell to Pat Carlson-Rukavina

Pat’s journey as a volunteer began as a teenager growing up in St. Paul, Minnesota. It became a lifelong

endeavor with activities ranging from teaching children in Mexico the joys of art and painting to being a part of

an Emergency Response Team with the Red Cross.

Pat is a gifted artist who has had paintings showcased at the Minnesota Museum of Art and been featured in

Who’s Who of American Women. She first came to Community Thread in 2017 as a student in our weekly

painting class. When the painting instructor retired, Pat quickly offered her help. Since then she has led our

painting class and participated in a variety of activities including Fun with Yarn, Artful Creations, Holiday Hope,

and Baubles, Bangles and Bling.

Her favorite thing about Community Thread is her connections

with the people. “I love it!” she exclaims.

Pat and her spouse, Carl, will soon be embarking on a new

journey - moving to Texas where they will build a home from the

ground up. Pat has already scouted out locations where she can

share her passion for teaching and painting.

Thank you Pat for your years of service and for sharing your

passion with us! You will be missed.
