A Note from Pastor Christi
It’s that time again…the changing of the
seasons. It’s Spring. Spring always
comes as a welcomed relief after the
winter. It almost seems like the air is
more fresh in the Spring. Spring is the
season where there is new life; flowers
bloom, grasses are no longer dormant
and mowing begins. For farmers, it’s
the beginning of the hay season, so
they can support their livestock the
next winter.
Spring is a season of new life and
growth. We have seen new life in the
church since the beginning of 2018
from new ministries, new staff, and
new members. We will continue to
experience it with the celebrations of
Confirmation Sunday and Graduation
Sunday as we walk with our youth in
these milestones in their faith and life.
In February, I preached on an icy
Sunday that we can experience new life
through the season of Lent. The season
of Lent can be challenging. It is a time
where we focus on sin and mortality.
No one wants to talk about either of
these two things, but we forget the
other side of these things is life. When
we understand the gospel and hope
that we have through Christ of how we
can experience new life through him,
we experience this new life by turning
from our sins and we receive eternal
life from Christ in death. We know we
can be freed from our sins because
Jesus overcame them on the cross.
That’s what makes Easter so beautiful,
because we know the end of the story.
We know there is an empty tomb. We
know Christ is Risen! We know there is
life through Christ and in Christ! We
know that Christ has victory!
When we skip Lent or the events of
Holy Week we don’t get to experience
the fullness of Easter. It would be like
going from Fall to Spring without
Winter. We can’t jump over all the
events of Holy Week or all the events of
Jesus’ last days and experience the joy
of the empty tomb with Mary. Mary
walked with Jesus to the cross and the
tomb, then found that tomb empty on
the third day. We can’t deeply know
the joy of Mary without walking with
her through all of the events of Jesus’
last days.
We invite you to join us for Holy Week!
Holy Week is the last week of March. I
look forward to walking with you all
from cross, to the grave, and to the
empty tomb on Easter morning! I look
forward to sharing with you the joy of
Easter as we experience the
resurrection of our lives and walk with
our Lord in the new life! I look forward
to discovering the empty tomb with
you on Easter morning! I look forward
to the greatest April Fools in history
where they thought Jesus was dead!

March Mission of the Month: Hannah’s Haven, A Teen Challenge Center MISSION
Hannah's Haven, A Teen challenge Center, helps women develop in spirit, mind, and body so they can become all they were created to be in Christ. In partnership with the community, Hannah's Haven provides a safe and stable environment for women who are in recovery from substance abuse.
HISTORY
Hannah's Haven was born out of the heart and spirit of Founder, Bonnie Harris. After being set free from addiction, Bonnie felt God calling her to start a ministry for women like herself. The ministry is named after Hannah, the barren woman in the Bible who cried out to the Lord in great distress. The Lord "remembered her" and she gave birth to Samuel, who became a great prophet.
MODEL FOR MINISTRY (S.A.F. E.)
Spiritual Growth, Affirmation, Fellowship, and Education
PROGRAM
Hannah's Haven is a structured program with 24-hour supervision designed to facilitate drug-free living and a successful transition into productive life. Program Components include: Daily Biblical teaching, Christian discipleship, Community volunteering, Vocational assistance, One-on-one mentoring, and Aftercare upon graduation.
THANK YOU FOR HELPING
Because there is a nominal fee for the program, Hannah's Haven depends solely on the support of donors and volunteers in the community. The transformation of one woman can affect her entire family and community. Monetary donations may be made to ORUMC, memo: Hannah’s Haven. Thank you for supporting Hannah's Haven and helping transform lives.

FAQ About Giving & Taxes Ahhhh, tax season is upon us. One of the most frequently asked questions this time of year for many people that are
expecting a return is, "What should I use my return for this year?" A vacation? New furniture? Paying down
household debt or medical expenses?
Even with the changes enacted through the new Tax Reform Bill, you CAN still itemize your deductions in 2018,
including your charitable donations to Oak Ridge UMC. As Finance Chair, I would like to ask you to prayerfully
consider giving a portion of your 2017 tax return (if you are receiving one) to support the Church's 2018 general
budget. Year to date, we are running about 14% below our projected giving for the general budget, primarily due to
the impacts of inclement weather in February. Thank you for your prayerful consideration of this opportunity to help
support our Church, our staff and our ministries.

Journeying together until we all embody
the life and teachings of Jesus
Walking by the sea, Jesus “noticed a tax-collector named Levi sitting at his tax booth, and Jesus said to him, “Follow Me.”
And he left everything behind, and got up and began to follow Him.” Luke 5:27-28
And such began Levi’s journey of faith with Jesus. Just the same as every disciple of Jesus, it begins with the call to
Come and Follow! This was not highly unusual as Rabbis (teachers) called disciples (learners). A disciple would sit at
the feet of the Rabbi, follow the Rabbi wherever they sojourned, in essence; they did life with the Rabbi until they had
learned all that the Rabbi could teach them. Disciples followed their Rabbi until they could live their life the way their
Rabbi lived.
Jesus’ ministry began when he called people to follow Him. He called all sorts of people regardless of age, gender, or
moral righteousness. Levi was a tax-collector, Peter, James and John were fishermen, and yet each of them received the
invitation to follow. Jesus called some of the most unlikely folks, plain ordinary people like you and I, fallible people who
did not live life totally the way God intends. But the invitation to follow—to become a disciple—meant that by simply
doing life with Jesus, their lives would change. Disciples had the privilege of sitting at the feet of Jesus as He taught,
had the privilege of seeing how Jesus reacted in trying situations, watched how Jesus interacted with others, they were
with Him when he worshipped and when He did both mundane and miraculous things. What an awesome experience!
A life-changing experience!
The wonderful news for us today, is that Jesus is still calling disciples. Still calling the most unlikely folks to become
disciples, people like you and I. And we are called just as we are - broken, lost, imperfect, and struggling to get through
life day by day. But the call to Follow - means that we are called to be transformed into people who do life the way
Jesus would do life if Jesus were living our life today. We have opportunities to learn from Jesus during our times of
Worship, in small group studies, and in acts of mission and service.
As Director of Adult Discipleship, my prayer is that each person who calls Oak Ridge UMC home will regularly participate
in both worship and one of the many small group offerings designed to help us in our journey to become more and
more Christ-like in word and deed.

Thank You! I want to thank a special person who has been so supportive of the blood drives for all the many years we've been hosting them. Thanks also to several other loyal helpers for setup and takedown, registration, and canteen help: John Crain, Mike Brooks, Rich Sydell, Pete Bass, Alan Mallard, and Bo Henley. Thanks also to all who bring canteen goodies or lend assistance when called upon.

Great news, several people have already signed up for the October 2018 teams! Last year was amazing. For the first
time we served 400 Guatemalan families with our two teams. This is a life changing ministry, not only for the people
we serve but also for team members. We serve God by serving others. The primary goal of the ministry is growing
God's Kingdom. Many of the people we serve are not Christian. This ministry establishes a connection between the
families we serve and the local church. Many are led to a relationship with Christ through that connection. As we go
into their homes and install their stoves, we get up close and personal with some of the most humble and grateful
people you will ever meet. For a relatively small investment on our part, they go from life threatening air and water, to
clear air and purified drinking water. For more ministry details check out this link on the church website:
www.oakridgeumc.org/outreach/article445376c8867534.htm
Another important part of this ministry is water filters in schools. For the water filters at home to be truly beneficial,
the children must also have clean water to drink at school. Our goal is to put a water filter in every classroom of the
schools in the villages where we serve. The teachers routinely demonstrate the proper use of the water filter and
express the importance of clean water. Putting water filters in the schools is obviously very important to the overall
success of the ministry.
This year we are planning three teams. The first team, October 13-20, will include many High Point University students.
The second team is scheduled for October 20-27. Pastor Andy will serve on the third team, October 27 - November 2.
This will be a fantastic opportunity for fellow parishioners to demonstrate God’s love as we serve together with Pastor
Andy. You have heard Pastor Andy talk about being passionate for Christ. Can we be passionate for Christ and not be
passionate for missions and serving others? I know we will see Jesus daily. Many on the third team will be from Oak
Ridge UMC. What an awesome opportunity to be passionate for Jesus and share unforgettable experiences with
church family.
There are many benefits from the Guatemala Stove and Water Filter Ministry including better health, clean air, clean
water, cost savings and a reduction in deforestation. Even better, many will come to know Christ because of this
ministry.
Please be a part of this amazing ministry. You can download the application and covenant from the webpage
referenced above. The deadline for your application and $600 deposit is May 21. The total cost will be approximately
$1300 for the team fee. This fee may be reduced for church members from budgeted funds. We also ask you to help
raise the funds necessary for the Guatemalan families we serve. I urge you to contact me now to reserve your spot on
a team. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or if you would like for me to email the forms to you.

6 Tips to Help “Spring Clean” Your Medicine Cabinet It’s that time of year again - the weather is slowly warming up and the days are getting longer! Despite what the temperature
outside may indicate, spring has officially arrived. And with the new season comes that time-honored ritual – spring cleaning.
Chances are, if you open up your medicine cabinet, you’ll find some old prescription bottles or maybe some leftover medication
that “might come in handy someday.” In actuality, those medications may have expired and may cause more harm than you
realize.
It’s important to extend spring cleaning to your medicine cabinet and here are 6 tips to get you started:
1. Check the dates. Examine everything in your medicine cabinet, including ointments, supplements and vitamins. Discard any
item that is beyond the expiration date. Many medications lose their effectiveness after the expiration date. Some may even
be toxic.
2. For prescriptions, follow the one year cut off rule. Discard any prescription medications that are more than one year old.
3. Ditch any items that have changed color, smell or taste. This includes any colors that have faded, because they may have
been exposed to too much light.
4. Discard unmarked containers. If something is no longer in its original container and cannot be identified, get rid of it. In the
future, try to always keep medications in their original containers so that you can easily recognize every medication. This
includes ointments, since these can easily be mistaken for creams.
5. Be careful about throwing out medication. Because of the potential harm to the environment, it is not recommended to
simply throw out medication or flush them down the toilet. Here’s what to do:
Place all medication in a sealable bag. If there are solid medications, add some water so they can dissolve.
Add kitty litter, coffee grounds, saw dust, or any material that mixes well and makes it unappealing for children or animals
to eat.
Seal the bag and put it in the trash.
Remove any identifying information on the prescription bottle (like the label), clean and recycle.
Your local pharmacy, police department or Drug Enforcement Agency may also be able to assist in disposing of medication in a
safe manner.
6. Consider relocating your medicine cabinet. Many people don’t realize that the bathroom cabinet is not the best place to store medication. The temperature and humidity changes that take place while the shower is running can lower the potency of your medication. Medications should be kept in a cool dry place, away from children. Consider a drawer in your dresser or a lock box in your closet.
