Dear Parents, There are great learning experiences happening each and every day at Creekside. When I was a classroom teacher I ended each school day by having the class brainstorm to this queson: “What did we accomplish today?” I wanted the students to reflect on the day that was and to remember the learning that had happened that day. I also wanted the students to have a ready list of learning and accomplishments to share with their parents when they got home from school. What does your child say when he/she comes home and you ask what all was learned at school that day? I’ll bet that somemes you hear “nothing” or a similar response. Do you let that response stand? I hope that you ask further and deeper quesons about your child’s day and really try to hear about what all was accomplished that day. Talking with your child about learning and school is one of the best acvies that any parent can do to stay close and connected with their child, but also to connue to show the child that learning is valued. Please think about this the next me your child comes home from school and their response to “What did you do today at school?” is something like “nothing!” Please inquire further and really learn about and explore the day with your child. Dear Parents, There are great learning experiences happening each and every day at Creekside. When I was a classroom teacher I ended each school day by having the class brainstorm to this question: “What did we accomplish today?” I wanted the students to reflect on the day that was and to remember the learning that had happened that day. I also wanted the students to have a ready list of learning and accomplishments to share with their parents when they got home from school.

What does your child say when he/she comes home and you ask what all was learned at school that day? I’ll bet that sometimes you hear “nothing” or a similar response. Do you let that response stand? I hope that you ask further and deeper questions about your child’s day and really try to hear about what all was accomplished that day. Talking with your child about learning and school is one of the best activities that any parent can do to stay close and connected with their child, but also to continue to show the child that learning is valued. Please think about this the next time your child comes home from school and their response to “What did you do today at school?” is something like “nothing!” Please inquire further and really learn about and explore the day with your child. There are great activities and learning happening each and every day at Creekside and I want you to hear all about it from your child each and every day.

From Our School Nurse, Mrs. Robbins As the snow starts to melt and the temperature starts to get warmer a lot of kids are thinking sports. There are lots of advantages to participating in spring activities. Sports can build up your child.........or drag them down. Make athletics a positive experience by using these strategies: Keep games in perspective. At the elementary age, sports should be about having fun and developing their skills. Ask about his or her favorite part of practice or the most interesting play in the game, rather than focusing on his performance or score. Encourage your little athlete to set some goals-----but be sure they are realistic. You might suggest that they try to catch the baseball in the air, or try a particular move in gymnastics that they have never done before. Remember those little goals add up. Avoid comments about your youngster's size or body. Concentrate n the friends he is making, the places they are playing, and the effort they are putting forth. Say positive things like, "I love how you tried to get that rebound", or "you really hustled to get that ball." Spring sports should be a time for fun and physical activity. When we focus on our children instead of the sport we are encouraging them to find the activity they love to do and teaching them to be winners in life.

National School Breakfast Week March 2nd-6th is National School Breakfast Week

There will be FREE Breakfast for all students on Monday, March 2nd to

celebrate School Breakfast Week! Mornings can be really crazy…the alarm doesn’t go off…the kids don’t want to get up…there’s no time to eat breakfast before the bus comes…or they’re just not ready to eat. Or maybe your teenager grabs a can of soda and a candy bar on the way to school. If this sounds like your house, we have a great solution for you! Breakfast is served at school every day!! School breakfast will energize your child’s day and provide them with a healthy start. A nutritious breakfast helps students be more alert so they can learn more in class, and has plenty of vitamins and nutrients for a strong and healthy body. Breakfast at school is affordable too. If you qualify for free or reduced price meals, you also qualify for the breakfast program, with no additional paperwork. You can’t find a healthy breakfast at such a low cost anywhere else. So, help your child start the day right with breakfast at school!

Counselor’s Corner From Mrs. Vidal, School Counselor

*The Classroom Guidance Theme for March is CAREER DEVELOPMENT!*

CAREER DAY: Creekside will hold the 5th annual Career Day for all fourth grade students on Thursday, March 26, 2014. We will also hold a half-day Career Day event for our 3rd grade students on Friday, May 15, 2014. The speakers will give a short presentation about their career and are encouraged to provide hands-on, interactive activities to help the children learn about the career. The theme for 3rd grade is “turning a hobby/interest into a career.”

MOCK INTERVIEWS We are recruiting parent volunteers to help during our 4th grade 30-minute mock interview session, 11:30 – 12:00, on Thursday, March 26. During this session, adults will conduct a brief interview with students in order to practice social skills such as eye contact, shaking hands, posture and politeness. Adults will be given a script to follow.

CAREERS ON WHEELS We will have our 4th annual “Careers on Wheels” event on Tuesday, April 21st. The event will take place 12:30 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. in the Creekside parking lot. This community event will help second grade students understand how a variety of vehicles are used in different occupations. We will have representatives from various organizations bring their work vehicles to the Creekside parking lot. These guests will talk about their occupations, the vehicles and how they are used, as well as what a typical workday is like. We still need speakers for this event. If you would like to participate or volunteer as a guest speaker, please contact Mrs. Vidal.

SMALL GROUP COUNSELING: Please contact Mrs. Vidal to refer your child for the following groups: • Camp Care-A-Lot allows students, K-4, to talk in a small group about issues they have

concerning many different life changes. • Lego Bunch works on social skills and motor skills for students in grades K – 2.

SCHOOL COUNSELING SUBSTITUTE Mrs. Vidal is having a baby very soon! Her due date is April 7th. She will not return for the school year after Spring Break. Luckily, we have an amazing substitute to fill in while she is gone. Please use our substitute as a resource the same way you would use Mrs. Vidal. She is a licensed school counselor and will do a fabulous job! The direct phone number will remain the same; however, please note that her email address will be different. We will formally introduce her to students and families soon!

CAMP INVENTION 2015 ILLUMINATE

Dates: June 15 – 19, 2015 Location: Creekside Elementary Time: 9:00 am – 3:30 pm

Camp Invention is where BIG ideas become the next BIG thing! Join us as we celebrate our 25th year of reinventing summer fun! In partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Franklin Community Schools is pleased to offer the nationally-acclaimed Camp Invention program to children entering grades one through six. It’s an exciting, weeklong summer adventure with lessons that explore connections between science, technology, engineering and innovation. Children will work together to seek solutions to real-world problems, turn ordinary into extraordinary and sharpen critical 21st century learning skills while rotating through several fascinating modules. In the KartWheel™ module, children let their engineering skills glide them across the finish line as they build, enhance and upgrade their very own freestyle racing cart. Boys and girls will explore what it means to prototype a product from scratch as they become an entrepreneur during the Design Studio: Illuminate™ module. In the I Can Invent: Next Level Gamers™ module, participants will take apart broken or unused appliances using real tools to create a physical video game model in the 3rd dimension! Finally, in the Inducted™ module, personalized video challenges from National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees are introduced along with hands-on activities like constructing super-structure mega-towers, assembling out-of-this-world space rockets and so much more! Local educators will facilitate program modules and enthusiastic high school and college students will serve as Leadership Interns ensuring that one staff member is in place for every eight children. Register on or before March 20, 2015 to receive $25 OFF the base price of $220. Every registration includes a complimentary Camp Invention t-shirt. Always have books on hand. Keep a book in your bag or your car’s glove compartment so your child can read in the car, or while waiting in line at the grocery store. Make regular trips to the library, and keep an eye out for books at bargain sales or garage sales. Or, consider holding a “book swap” with neighbors and friends. For birthdays or holidays, give your child new reading material.

Keep it up. Find ways to encourage your child to pick up new reading material to read once one book is fi nished. For instance, introduce him or her to a series or ask your librarian for books by the same author. Draft a “to-read” list that your child can check off . Consider subscribing your child to a magazine for kids.

Focus on their interests. Encourage your child to check out books from the library that feature characters or topics he or she is interested in. Whether it’s NASCAR to NASA, the topic doesn’t matter (as long as it’s age-appropriate), as long as your child is reading.

Read out loud together. Schedule time to read aloud together, taking turns to read passages. Invite your entire family to participate. Use diff erent voices for diff erent characters, or invite your child to make sound eff ects for the story.

Make it a routine. Consider how to make reading habitual. Your family could have a weekly read-aloud session, or you and your child could read each week before bed.

Be a patient listener. No matter how slowly your young learner reads, avoid fi nishing sentences for your child.

Gently correct mistakes, sound out words together, and let your child know you’re proud.

Cut the distractions. During reading time, turn off or put away electronic devices. Make sure you follow the rule, too.

Ask questions. Ask your child about what he or she is reading in school or what you are reading together. Try open-ended questions such as, “Why do you think the character did that?,” “What would you do if you were in that situation?,” or “What do you think will happen next?”

Read beyond books. Invite your child to read menus, greeting cards, movie listings, newspaper comic strips, or directions to a destination. Word recognition is an important step for

reading fl uency, so consider using strips of paper and tape to label everyday objects in your home to boost your child’s familiarity with words.

T he seeds for success in the classroom are sown at home. Encouraging children to read at home is one of the most powerful ways that parents can support students’ learning. Just 15 minutes of reading at home per day

can make a diff erence in students’ reading fl uency. Prioritize reading with these tips.
