Becoming CommunityJim Powell, Executive [email protected]
I f you were to spend any amount of time on our beautiful campus, I believe that you would soon begin to experience what a myriad of other guests have felt on their visits. There is a sense of community! So much so that we
often joke about the fact that we live “under the dome” in our comfy, thirty acre patch of green, surrounded by corn fields (I could call it a “Field of Dreams”, but our kids would never agree with that!).
We have made a concerted effort over the past year and a half to share with our young people what we all know and enjoy – God’s love. After all it was God who introduced us to “community”, long before the early Christians began practicing it in the Book of Acts. Woven throughout the pages of scripture is a recurring message about caring for those who cannot care for themselves, the weak and vulnerable, and especially those who are widows and orphans. We spend a lot of time at Shults-Lewis talking to our kids about community, and what that means for them. It is strange to them to hear phrases like, “All of us are smarter than any one of us”, then find themselves included in meetings with staff where their input is not only requested, but valued. We speak about concepts like social learning, and social responsibility to stress that they have a part to play in their personal relationships. Our goal is to help them understand that everyone needs the help of other people as we traverse through life.
Becoming part of a community means having things in common with those around us. In the days of the early church, this commonness involved the activities of daily life, but was fashioned by the relationship each of them had in Christ. They encouraged one another by sharing time together in fellowship and worship, sharing their possessions to make sure no one was in need. The Hebrew writer also speaks to this subject by use of a synonym (“partakers”), with an exhortation to be mindful of those who are in danger of falling short of God’s promised rest.
We are so grateful to know that there are so many folks like you who are willing to share and sacrifice your time, energy, and financial resources, in order to encourage all of us who work in this ministry to continue the great work that began nearly sixty-two years ago. God has richly blessed Shults-Lewis through the years, and I want to take the opportunity to thank you for “becoming community” to the children and staff here. We look forward with great anticipation to your continuing care and support in the common cause of “Responding with God’s love to serve and strengthen children and families.”

Mike and Jennifer Zandstra stepped out of houseparenting in November due to family circumstances. We appreciate all of their service and for the love they have given to our kids. Mike is still a part of our education staff and Jen will continue to volunteer and will always be a part of our community.

Annual Staff Appreciation DinnerI n November the Board of Trustees honored the staff at the Annual Staff Appreciation Dinner. All of the
staff were honored for their service this year to Shults-Lewis. Jennifer Zandstra was recognized with the Service to Children Award and Dick & Nita Stockton were given the highest award, the Trustees Award,
for all of their service to children. Dick & Nita have been “grandparents” to the children here, served on the Board, as well as volunteered as Sojourners. We appreciate all of their efforts, as well as all that Jennifer has done for this ministry.

I was either texting Jim Stone about the upcoming Phone Campaign or sending a snap to Lisa Ramsay when Kerri Halsey, Housemom of Home 2, emerged from her home
into the office. “Are you working or are you playing?” she laughingly said as she walked past my office. “Yep!” I’ve said it before, but I am truly blessed to spend my time with you, my friends! Best Job Ever! I have an awesome community.
As I type this article, my best friend walks out of her office and into her daughter’s office, carrying with her the inserts for your end of year receipts. I am blessed to have a Development Team consisting of my best friend and her daughter. I have an awesome community.
In the moments after Kerri walked past my office, Jim Powell and Joe Allen gather in the hall to discuss Operations issues. And us, being us, get on a side tangent conversation, causing us all to laugh. I have an awesome community.
I stood in our morning Community Circle and one of our young men, laughingly tells me his goal is to “annoy Ms. Beth today” which he quickly changed to “have a great day”. Another young lady gives me a hug as she walks out the door to class. I have an awesome community.
I sit in a Communication meeting and am greeted by Aley Franklin, Housemom of Home #6, “Hi, Friend” and I begin to scan the faces around the table. Friends or Co-Workers? Yep! I have an awesome community.
Just 3 miles up the road or 10,000 miles away, you sit and read about the happenings at Shults-Lewis. You are a part of our awesome community! I absolutely love our community. I am blessed.
I love that God created a Church, His Community of people, that “we, though many, are one body in Christ…” (Romans 12:5). It is awesome that God created us to be a part of each other. We each use our gifts and talents to glorify Him.
Together, as a community, we have several opportunities to serve God and His children this year. How will you get involved?
Have you considered your Phone for Children Campaign pledge for 2018? We’ll be calling starting March 1st.
While you were budgeting this year, did you consider becoming a Helping Hand in 2018? Helping Hands are our monthly givers. Helping Hand donors receive a monthly update on things happening on campus with the kids. Helping Hands also do not receive solicitation letters or a Phone Campaign phone call.
Have you decided where you are going to place your Change Can so that you can be one of the 1,000 families to fill your can with at least $40 for the children?
Have you submitted your “vacation” day for Friday, June 22nd for our Golf Tournament?
Have you marked July 29th as Day of Prayer & Giving for Shults-Lewis?
Have you considered visiting campus, seeing your mission field? Load the van up and bring a group to see campus, and if you are able, commit a few days of service.
Have you started talking about Annual Day, Saturday, September 15th, and started planning to come spend the day with us?
I look forward to serving alongside you this year in this ministry. Thanks for being a part of my awesome community!

J ust as in a city, our campus is made up of various communities that may be different in their own way, but
work together for the whole.
The education community has gained a new teacher in Maddi Nelson. Maddi joins our classroom in the afternoons. She had already been filling in from time to time, but now joins in a regular schedule of consistency in the school in addition to her role as a relief housemom.
With the return from Christmas break, we also begin our second semester. We continue with the growth and development of our online classes. The kids are becoming more settled with the
courses available to them. We have also made some adjustments to routine and schedule to better accommodate their learning needs.
Our seventh, eighth and tenth grade students will soon be getting ready for the ISTEP state test. This measures their skills in the subjects of English and Math.
You too are also a part of our community. For this program and for the school. The Box Tops for Education that you generously send to us continue to be a benefit. We are looking to use them for a school field trip this year.
Thank you always for your continued support and prayers!
School HappeningsMike Zandstra, Interim [email protected]
A lthough it is so very cold right now, it never ceases to amaze me of the beauty that winter brings. Anyone that knows me KNOWS I am not a fan of cold weather,
but I can always see the beauty of God’s handiwork in the winter, just as I can see His handiwork in the spring and fall. I believe most of us “see” what we are looking for. If we are looking for beauty and blessings, we can find those things; if we are looking for ugliness and something to complain about, we can find that as well. Being in the field of social work, this is something I have to keep in mind. I often joke about “seeing things from the strengths perspective” and concentrating on the positive instead of the negative. I apply this same concept into all areas of my life. It is so easy to become hardened and “accepting” of all the injustices that have happened to our residents. I know this is not what God wants from me though. He wants me to focus on the little things that show me that each resident is learning, growing, and maturing as they continue their placement here at Shults-Lewis. God wants me to shout accolades when a resident makes a consistent level 3 for a month; He wants me to pat that resident on the back who decides he/she is not going to let what has happened to them in the past define them; He wants me to pray for those residents who are struggling with doing what is right instead of going along with what they have always done at home. God wants me to support and encourage all our residents, no matter how many tantrums they might throw and how many times they might cuss me out. He wants me to remember and ask, “What has happened to this child?”, and then do whatever I can to lighten their load and empower them to be able to mature and grow into the successful adult that God knows they can be. Yes, I truly believe the “strengths perspective” is one of the many
ways I can show God’s love to not only our residents but to the world in general.
Our kids were showered with Christmas gifts this year, as they are every year. I want to thank everyone who bought a gift, a gift card, sent a donation, prayed for, etc., for one of our residents or houseparents. Your commitment and love for our community means more than you will ever know. For many of our residents, the gifts they receive while here at Shults-Lewis are the only Christmas gifts they receive, period. And from past experience, most of these residents will remember long after they have left our care, how generous donors were to them during the holidays. Your generosity does not go unnoticed.
We celebrated with the residents at their Christmas party on Friday, December 22nd. Santa even took time out from his busy job (Thanks Glenn Robertson) to join us and hand out a gift to each of the residents. Both staff and kids enjoyed a delicious “cook-out” lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs (Thanks to Chef Jim Powell) with staff bringing sides to share. After lunch, we joined in several games until Santa arrived.
And that brings us back around to the New Year, 2018. For this New Year Shults-Lewis has chosen “Community” as our theme for the year. We cannot do the work we do here without the support and prayers of other people. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a community to support and continue this work. That community includes YOU and we are so thankful for all of you.
May God give you peace and health during this exciting New Year!
From My Heart to YoursAngela Robertson, Program [email protected]

Because of your support in the 2017 Day of Prayer & Giving, our kids are actively involved with the Barn, Goats, and other 4H
programs! Thank you!!!
