A national rail safety program bringing train, track and level crossing safety into the classroom
TrackSAFE Education offers teachers free learning resources for engaging student-centred lessons within various Australian
Curriculum learning areas, with a train and track safety theme. Our resources are based on substantial evidence that students learn and retain safety messages best when they are positive and integrated as part of their normal curriculum. We aim to make rail safety education easy for teachers and at the same time relevant, meaningful and fun for students. Our resources are relevant to schools in rural, regional and metropolitan areas of Australia.

Why teach rail safety?
More than 250,000 school students catch trains each day. Many more cross tracks at level crossings to get to school, or travel on trains in school and public holidays and on excursions.
The importance of exercising caution and staying safe when anywhere near the rail network cannot be understated. Every year we witness a situation where there are around 136 trespass incidents causing death or serious injury on the rail network. Additionally, there are over 4,200 near hits resulting from trespass. Every near hit is only seconds away from becoming a potentially devastating incident.Tragically, more than a third of the 130 Australians who die or are seriously injured each year in pedestrian level crossing incidents are young people aged between 0 and 24 years.Teachers know their students best, so we offer a curriculum-based safety education program to enable teachers to facilitate their students’ learning in rail safety.
All units of work include:• Comprehensive teacher
notes including suggested assessment rubrics
• Differentiated learning activities to help you tailor lessons to your students’ needs, and
• Accompanying printable or linked resources

How to get the most out of the TrackSAFE Education resources
Download the unit of work for your relevant year level and learning area. Read through the teacher notes and select which lessons suit your students.
2Schedule the lessons in your program - they can be sequential or spread out over a term. Curriculum links are provided to make fitting rail safety into your program easy. When you run the lessons, you can encourage students to visit the student section of our website for research help, ‘Track Facts’ and games.
3 Check for changes in students’ knowledge, skills and attitudes towards rail safety by using our quick and easy assessment and evaluation tools before, during and after your students do the lessons. We’d also love you to share the results with us so we can continually improve our program.
4Share student work with us. We’ll publicise your school and send your class some great giveaways!
We’ve designed our resources within
English, The Arts and Health & PE, linked with the General Capabilities
of Personal & Social Capability, Critical
& Creative Thinking, and Literacy.
