Daimler Dingo Scout Car Mks I-III
Digitally reproduced from original Army documents
The Dingo was a light and fast armouredreconnaissance vehicle first developed in 1938. Itwas designed for a crew of 2 and operated ahead ofarmoured formations as well as in liaison roles.Dingo was well armoured for its size and wasequipped with the Bren Light Machine Gun, smokedischargers and the radio set No 19.
All 4 wheels are driven and the vehicle waspowered by a rear mounted Daimler 6 cylinder 2.5litre petrol engine. Unusually the Dingo had a fluidflywheel and a 5 speed pre-selector gearbox. This
coupled with a transfer gearbox gave 5 forward and5 reverse gears. With its high speed and excellentmanoeuvrability it earned an excellent reputation inthe units who deployed it.
The Dingo was so successful that it was not replacedin service until the early 1950s. It saw service inmost theatres of operation and remained in servicewith the British army until it was replaced by theFerret Scout Car. In total 6500+ Dingoes were builtin several variants.
