WHERE IS BULGARIA ON THE MAP? The Republic of

Bulgaria is a country in southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the north, Serbia and  Macedonia to the west, Greece and  Turkey to the south, and the Black Sea to the east. Bulgaria is Europe's16th-largest country.

FLAG AND COAT OF ARMS OF BULGARIA

The coat of arms consists of a crowned golden lion rampant over a dark red shield; above the shield is the Bulgarian historical crown. The shield is supported by two crowned golden lions rampant; below the shield there is compartment in the shape of oak twigs with the national motto "Unity makes strength" inscribed on them.

The flag is a tricolour consisting of three equal-sized horizontal bands of white, green, and red. The meaning of the national symbol is the independence and sovereignty of the Bulgarian state. Other meaning of the colors are - white – hope and peace, red - strength and valour, green - represents the nature and the development of the country in agriculture.

Bulgarian Chinese Wall(Tsarevets fortress)It is a medieval stronghold located on a hill with the same name in Veliko Tarnovo . It served as the Second Bulgarian Empire's primary fortress and strongest bulwark from 1185 to 1393, housing the royal and the patriarchal palaces, and is a popular tourist attractionThe Shipka Memorial is a memorial

to those who died for the Liberation of Bulgaria during the Battles of Shipka Pass in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. It was opened with a ceremony in 1934 and designed by architect Atanas Donkov and sculptor Aleksandar Andreev. An important influence was the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Germany.

The Belogradchik Rocks are a group of strange shaped rock formations located on the western slopes of the Balkan Mountains near the town of Belogradchik in northwest Bulgaria. Some of the rocks reach up to 200 m in height. Many rocks have fantastic shapes and are associated with interesting legends. They are often named for people or objects they are thought to resemble.

The Seven Rila Lakes are a group of lakes of glacial origin (glacial lakes), situated in the northwestern Rila Mountains in Bulgaria. They are the most visited group of lakes in Bulgaria. The lakes are situated between 2,100 and 2,500 metres elevation above sea level.

3) BULGARIAN CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONSFire dancing, more famous in Bulgaria as nestinarstvo, can be seen in some villages in Bulgaria. This festival symbolises the transition from spring to summer. The dancers, who are most often women, perform a dance on hot glowing embers whilst in a trance state. The tradition implies that the fire dancer is chosen and guided by the saint of the holiday, whose icon is being held while dancing on the embers. This event takes place twice a year in

Bulgaria - the days around New Year’s Eve and on the holiday of Sirni Zagovezni (celebrated seven weeks before Easter).The participants in this ritual are called kukeri and they are dressed-up men in handmade costumes and masks. The outcome of their dances and games are that the evil spirits that the winter had brought have been chased away and only good is to be expected from now on.
