NOTES ON CHARACTERSAND COSTUMES

BECKY: Becky, the daughter of the royallaun­dress, is about sixteen and very pretty. She wearssimple but pretty dresses, except for the Emperor'sbirthday ball, when she appears in a harlequin cos­tume with cap and bells (or whatever costume the di­rector decides to use).

VICKI: Vicki. is Becky's younger sister. She isabout ten years old and very earnest. She dressessimilarly to Becky throughout.

EMPEROR: The Emperor of Libertania wearsfine clothes decorated with frills. In the early scenes,he is elaborately dressed, but less sumptuously thanduring the levee (Act One, Scene Seven), which is acourt scene. In the Birthday Bl.ll scene, he appearsbarefooted and wearing only red underpants and a thinwhite undershirt decorated with the royal insignia inred. In all scenes he wears a crown and carries hisscepter Q

EMPRESS: The Empress wears fine clothes, ex­cept in Act Two, Scene Four, when she appears in alight flowered muslin robe (worn over the court dressin which she appears in the next scene), bedroomslippers, and a ruffled muslin night cap. In SceneFive, she wears a court dress.

PRINCESS: The Princess wears clothes suitableto her station in life, except in Act One, Scene Sixwhen she wears one of Becky rs dresses. In Act Two,Scene Four and thereafter, she is elaborately dressedin a beautiful court dress.

MILLIE: The Princess! lady-in-waiting is aboutseventeen years old, pretty, and loyal. She wearsclothes similar to the Princess but simpler and suitedto her lower rank. In Act One, Scene Six, she also

wears one of Becky's dresses;and in Act Two,ScenesFour and Five, an elaborate court dress.

PRINCE MICHAEL: The Prince is a handsomeyoung man. Except for a brief interval in Act One.Scene Two, (the Mirror scene) he is dressed in arough jacket such as a woodsman or hunter wouldwear, until Act Two, Scene Two, when he is providedwith more suitable attire for his role as a royalweaver. For the Mirror scene he wears a smartlybraided jacket.

LORD MAL: Lord Mal is tall,evil-Iooking, andsports a mustache. He dresses in fine clothes andwears a long sword or cutlass. In the Birthday Ballscene, he is very elegantly dressed.

ATTENDANTS to Lord Mal: Lord Mal's at­tendants are dressed rather like pirates, with whipsor cutlasses stuck in their belts.

LORD OLD: The faithful old councilor is dress­ed always in a plain long black gown like a scholar'srobe. He wears "Ben Franklin" spectacles, throughwhich he peers nearsightedly.

JESTER: The court jester wears a colorful cos­tume, with cap and bells.

form, scarlet or gold cushion (option­al), smaller armchair, small gilt chair,standing full-length mirror, banner orbanners bearing royal coat-of-arms,bench.

Scene 5: Gilt chair and dressing table, plain lowchair,draped windOW, dressing gown ongilt chair; mirror, comb and brush ondressing table; small stand with work­basket on it; thimble, needle, thread andunfinished needlework in workbasket.

Scene 6: Straw on floor (on tarpaulin), highbarred window, stools.

ACT TWO:Scene 1: None.Scenes 2 and 4: Loom and bench, cutting table,

shears, benches, crown jewels in glasscase, bedroll containing mirror; tailor'sdummy on roller skates (offstage).

Scene 3: Gilt chairs, large standing mirror.Scene 5: Same as Act One, Scenes 4 and 7.

Add decorated card table holding hugebirthday cake, bench, chairs.

STAGE POSITIONS

Upstage means away from the footlights, do-. l­

stage means toward the footlights, and right andleft are used with reference to the actor as he facesthe audience. R means right, L means left, U meansup, D means dmpn. C means cente'l", and these ab­breviations are used in combination, as:.. U R for upright, R C for right center, D Lefor down left cen­ter, etc. A territory designated on the stage refersto a general area, rather than to a given point.

NOTE: Before starting rehearsals, chalk offyour stage or rehearsal space as indicated above inthe Chart of Stage Positions. Then teach your ac­tors the meanings aJrld positions of these fundamen­tal terms of stage movement by having them walkfrom one position to another until they are familiarwith the~. The use of these abbreviated terms indirecting the play saves time, speeds up rehearsals,and reduces the amount of explanation the directorhas to give to his actors.

ACT ONEScene One

(The play opens before the curtain. There is aneffect of a postern door into the castle at Rstage. A small bench and a small woodenstool stand near it. At L stage, and suggestedby a few potted plants, there is a garden en­trance. A SENTRY is walking guard duty backand forth across stage. He carries a staff andpaces smartly from the postern door to thegarden entrance. BECKY, followed by VICKY,enters from the garden. BECKY is about six­teen and very pretty. VICKY is about ten andvery earnest. )

BECKY (hissing it out).Vicki, go home!

VICKI (standing up for her rights).Mama said I could come. I'm to help bring thelaundry.

BECKY (scorning such "help").I don't need your help and I donlt want you al­ways tagging after me.

VICKYMama said ----

(At this point the SENTRY slams down hisstaff, turns, and sees them.)

SENTRYHere! Here!

(Holds his staff crosswise, barring theirway. )

The castle grounds are private.

BECKY (curtsying)I came for the royal laundry, if you please,sir.

VICKI (also curtsying)And I'm her sister. I'm to help.

BECKYShush!

SENTRYUh - well--I'll see if the laundry's ready.

(He raps lightly on the door, listens amoment. No response. He grounds hisstaff and steps inside. )

BECKY (fiercely)Why do you always talk. so much? You neverknow when to shut up !

VICKI (meekly)I only said----

BECKY (cutting in)And you're always saying-­

(Mimics her. )"Mama said. "

VICKI (ready to weep)Well, you're always scolding me and Mama didsay----

BECKYAround this castle the only thing that counts is

what the Emperor says. I found that out fastenough. And now, if you'll kindly go home.

VICKI (backing up)But Mama----

BECKY (advancing on her with hands like claws)Go home, or 1'11----

(SENTRY re-enters with a dark bluelaund"'y bag decorated with a stylizedgold ,.. ... ')wn. )

SENTRYThe laundry.

(Puts down the bag. )

BECKY (taking it)Thank you.

(She and VICKI start to leave. Off­stage there is a fanfare of trumpets. )

SENTRYThe Emperor! Stand back.

(Motions them back. BECKY andVICKI hastily obey. )

(The royal party enters. The party consists of theEMPEROR, the EMPRESS, and the PRINCESS.)

SENTRY (bashing down his staff)The Emperor, the Empress, the PrincessRoyal!

(BECKY and VICKI drop deep curtsies. )

EMPEROR (pausing and surveying them)Whom have we here?

BECKYWe came for the royal laundry, Sire.

EMPERORThe ~aundry--ah, yes.

(To the EMPRESS.)Speak to them, my dear. It was unsatisfactorylast week.

(The EMPEROR continues, and exits offstage R. He hums the music of ItI LikeThe Way I Look. If)

BECKY (very worried)What was wrong?

EMPRESSI'm sorry to mention it, but it's so important 1You recall the deep lace frills on the Emperor'sshirt cuffs?

(BE CKY and VICKI nod in anxious con­cern. )

Well, usually they are fluffed out like this.(Demonstrates with her hand bouffantfrills. )

Last week they were like this.(Demonstrates limp frills. )

BECKYExcuse it, please. I'll tell my mother.

(EMPRESS nods and starts to exit. )

VICKI (brightly)It was all the fault of our cat, your Highness.

EMPRESS (pausing)You said--

(She can hardly believe it. )--a cat?

(BECKY makes frantic gestures toVICKI to shush, but VICKI plungesahead. )

VICKIOur cat just loves the laundry basket. It'swhere she always has her kittens and she likesto sleep there, too.

EMPRESS (the enormity of it)You mean your cat slept on the Emperor'sclothes?

BECKY (in anguish)It won't ever happen again, ma'am.

PRINCESS-Mother, surely it's not that important.

EMPRESS (coldly)It's very important. Dressing the part of anEmperor is hard, time -consuming work.

PRINCESS (she's heard that often enough)I know.

(To BECKY.)Did you bring my dresses?

BECKYWe left them with the housekeeper.

(Dreamily. )We love to do them. They're so beautiful!

PRINCESS (surprised and pleased)Why, thank. you, dear.

BECKY (shyly)I always picture you dancing in them- -usuallyin the moonlight--with some handsome youngprince.

PRINCESS (smiling)I picture myself that way, too--only, of coursethere isn't any prince.

BECKYThere isn't? I sometimes thought PrinceMichael of Transylvania--his country is rightnext to ours----

PRINCESSBut we're not on friendly terms with Transyl­vania.

(Sighs. )These old misunderstandings!

EMPRESSThe Emperor means to end all that--as soon ashe has time. Besides it's rumored that PrinceMichael was interested in a lady -"of his father'scourt. Later he simply dropped her.

PRINCESSWell ... ?

EMPRESSThat shows Prince Michael is fickle.

PRINCESSOr perhaps it only shows she wasn't his type.

BECKYIf you don't dance with young princes, thenwhom do you dance with?

PRINCESSWhy, usually with my father's councilors. Theyask me out of politeness, though dancing tiresthem very much.

VICKI (blurting it out)Dancing with them must tire you verymuch, too!

PRINCESSNo--not too much. Because I have a secretthat I try to remember at such times.

VICKI (eagerly)A secret? Oh, please ten us!

EMPRESSMelissa, don't delay too long. Remember yourneedlework.

PRINCESSYes, Mother. I have it with me.

EMPRESS (to BECKY and VICKI)And remember the Emperor's frills.

BECKY and VICKI {bobbing curtsies)Yes, your Highness.

(EMPRESS exits.)

VICKI (eagerly)You said a secret? I love secrets!

BECKY (aghast at such boldness)Vicki, you musn't ask!

PRINCESSBut it's fun to share a secret. Come here andI'll tell you.

(She takes VICKI's hand and leads herto bench. PRINCESS sits on bench andmotions VICKI to draw up a stool andmotions BECKY to join them. BECKYhesitates and then runs to kneel at otherknee of PRINCESS. Both look up raptlyinto face of PRINCESS. )

(There is a patter of running feet off R anel a prettyseventeen-year-old [MILLIE] enters in greatexcitement. )

SENTRY (bashing down his staff)Lady Millie, Lady-in-waiting to the PrincessRoyal.

PRINCESSWhat is it, my darling lady-in-waiting?

MILLIE

Wonderful, exciting news, my Princess!13

PRINCESSPlease go on!

MILLIE (getting her breath)A rumor that two handsome young men havebeen seen in the Royal Forest.

PRINCESSIs the rumor from a good source ?

MILLIEThe best!

PRINCESSTell me .

MILLIE (crossing DR)The Constable told the arrow-maker, whotold the butcher, who told the candlestick man,who told his wife, who told the page, who toldthe gilder, who told the Empress, who toldme to warn you to come straight inside thecastle.

PRINCESS (rising)But who saw them first?

MILLIEOh, some dumb kid, who told the Forest Rang­er. They're hunting for them now. You'renot to leave the castle until they've been foundand are safely in the dungeon. So come along.

PRINCESS (going with MILLIE)Not leave the castle? We'll see about that!

ACT ONEScene Two

(The curtains open on a glade in the forest, not farfrom the Emperor's Castle. A rustic effectmay be achieved by setting up large brances ofevergreens or other foliage to give the effectof trees, and smaller potted branches to simu­late undergrowth. Some odd pieces of drift­wood or old fallen branches and a stump or twoadd to the effect, as does an occasional pottedflower. The time is late afternoon and the skybeyond the trees still shows light. The RANG­ER enters with a small BOY as guide.)

BOYHere's the place.

RANGER (skeptically)Two men, acting like spies, you said- -justhow does a spy act?

BOY (aware that he is being baited, but sticking tohis story)I told you. They kept looking around in a sus­picious way.

RANGER (stumbling over a stump)We'd better keep looking aroWld, too, or we'llbreak a leg!

BOYOne of them had a bundle on his back.
