A motion graphic are video footage or animation to create an illusion of motion. Motion graphics usually have audio added to them. The most popular program for creating motion graphics is Adobe after effects, although there are more expensive ones for creating more complex motion graphics. One thing all the motion graphic programs have in common is there tools, they can add text, combine videos and even make it 3D which is the most important part of creating a motion graphic. The BBC often use sting and one I have looked at was the BBC Olympic Sting, A sting is a way to try and keep the audience on the same channel throughout adverts. In the clip you see a short flash of light which then opens up to show you red blue and white lights starting to go behind and past the text of the bbc logo, the colour could be there to show the fact they are supporting great Britain in the Olympics as they are the 3 colours in the British flag, there is also a line of white light that shoots towards to camera and disappears. A TV ident is a way for a station to promote its brand identy and remind what channel the audience are watching. In the Viva ident there are lots of things going on, the start of the motion graphic there is just a letter V in the shot with some sparkle effects around it until the rest of the word comes around and the word viva is formed, the letters are then moved further back. The main difference between a sting and an ident is that a Ident is usually longer than a sting and is there to remind the audience what station they are watching in between adverts and a TV sting is usually a lot longer and is there to keep the audience watching between shows while the breaks are on and to advertise other products on the channel such as new TV shows.

The finding nemo DVD menu is created by Pixar using a piece of software called renderman. The clip contains movement on the coral and light effects over the words finding nemo to give the effect that its under water. There are lots of features available on renderman and one of the main reasons Pixar use renderman is because it has great displacement, and its performance is amazing as well as great depth of field, it also has lots of great tools for adding effects such as fur and hair. Although there are no direct disadvantages of using renderman for creating Motion graphics it is very expensive and requires a lot space on your computer to be able to run the software. If you were to add the effects of the waving coral using software such as adobe after effects you would add a time scale and set the object to move a certain amount in that period of time and repeat on each object . To add the particle effects using renderman like the ones seen in finding nemo you would need to get the maya toolbar which has a lot of particle effects from rain to hair and fur. My research suggests that The 300 dvd menu was made on adobe after effects one

of the main advantages of using Adobe after effects is that it integrates very well with other software especially all other adobe software such as Photoshop or after effects and that the skills you learn in Photoshop can easily be transferred into after effects. Another advantage is the good range of tools it has for the price, such as one tool called light falloff which allows users to realistically mimic light effects and how they would appear in the real world. Although it does have some good advantages it also has some disadvantages such as one of the main disadvantages is that it requires a lot of ram in order to perform the more complex tasks. Also it is not a 3D animation programme and because of that it is quite restrictive and has limited 3D capability’s.

In the bbc Olympic broadcaster Ident the first few seconds of the clip, the image is far away and the camera zooms in and the closer it gets to the bbc logo the more lights appear and it starts to unblur, the lights then rotate around the image. If you wanted to recreate this on adobe after effects using the light effect tool and the zooming in tool.

There are lots different types of file formats including mp4 and flv and much more. MP4 is mostly used for sharing videos on the internet such as YouTube and is a relativity small file size so can be stored in emails or devices such as phones. FLV file format is a good choice for embedding videos on the internet, Most big video sharers on the internet use it from YouTube, Google videos and yahoo videos. FLV can be watched by anyone with a flash player installed although FLV files can run slowly if your computer isn’t that fast.
