W hen sa il ing from Singapore ro Fiji , a ship is of ten in sight of land . Thc hills of Java, the high , sh:1pc1y conc,," of Sumbawa and Flores wreathed in mountain smokc, lie in the dista nce curtained by hazc. T hc small coral islands of thc Torrcs Strait seem to leap out of the sea ahead. One minute lhe horizon is hard to disti nguish in lhe metallic shcen of sea alld sky, :lIld thc next time you look up you sec a low island covcred in br ight green foliage alld ringed by whitc sa ncly bcachcs lhat arc almast close cl10ugh lO swim to. At the narroweSl part of thc straits, the islands are close enough for you to sec huts under me palm trccs, boats pulled up on the beach, and onc or two dark-sk inned nat ives si lhoucllcd agai nst the snowy whitencss of lhc sa nds. Within a couple of days, the south coast of Ncw Guinea is in sight , anel if yOll pass Port Morcsby in thc early hours of the morning you scc lhc sunlighr gl il1l ing on meta! rooftops of the town, with thc Owen Stanley Ra nges towering behind . T hc chart on thc navigator's t:lblc on Lhe bridge is a con~ stant source of pleasurc to a tr:lveller on a c:lrgo ship. Being thc only passenger, rhc officers are happy lO let you look at it whenever you like, so long as you do not intcrfe rc with their business of guieling rhe ship through thc tricky, six miles wiele, channel bctwcen the islands. T hc island to starboarel, you lcarn, is Pcntccost, anel the other is Ambrim lsla nd. T he settlcment is cal\ cel "0 Lul Mission" . As we stcamed through, lhc officers took compass bearings on Malo Killi Killi lsla nd anel a point called Cape Wowo, LO fix our position accurately.

As I looked at these mysterious and exeiting islands, Capta in Kloots said I \ooked like a landlubber, aching to get ashore.

A big passenger "esse! is nOlhing but a Aoating hotel , and the '''vonders'' of thc sca seldom extend beyond decorativc sea-horses on bedspreads and shower cu rtains. During the day the officer of the watch shoots thc sun with the sextant , anel a few min utes later shows you the lilde cross on lhe chart marking the Van C loon's position. When thc ship is close to land, the charts are replaced once or twice cl day, and lhc crosses st ride hom OIlC chart to anothcr with exciting speecl. But voyaging across oeeans and wide seas, eh;;lrts of smaller scale are used, and the crosses seem to t ri ckle across, loitcri ng on their way. Before you know it, [hey are halt way ::.cross anel land is in sight again.

So it was as the Van Cloon left thc eor::.1 Sca behind anel nosed out into thc Western Pacific . We had been al sea aboul three weeks - I h::.cI lo ng ago lost all rrace of time - and Fiji was still thrce da ys away. Our gl impses of land 50 fa r had been tantalising, like lhe whiff of a gorgcous d illllcr te eOl11e te a starving man. All day, on the third d::.y , I was o n the bridge, probing the way ahead fo r thc fi rst sigh t o f lanel. And sudelenl y, there ir was. Land! It rose out of sea and sky, dead ahcad, in thc middle o( the afternoon. [ (dl like dancing. I feit like running to thc top of the mast, sta nding on my head, anel running down aga in . On deck, lhe Chinese crew lookeel just as happy ... . .. Lautoka , here we come!

For over ten years, R .IL. Post has benefiled by the erudite knowledge ol this Jndelatigable man, who has regularly wriuen Ollr interesting baak reviews, as weil as on a great variety of subjects. NoUJ he combines his orien/al kn.owledge with the ' know~how' of a seaman, to produce (I n (lccount - which even a landlubber can appreciate - of a:

In the February issue an article appeared on the subject memioned above; in it was inclicated that the compass depicted had nothing whatever to do with the sea . Indecd, but what does a Chi nese compass tha t is used fo r navigation look like?

Some twenty years ago when war was rag ing all around us I used to rest my bones in the library of the Sinological Instiwte at Leyden. P rofessor Duyvencbk, just prior to obtain ing board anel lodging in the Oranje H otel at Scheveningen , had uneanhed a Chi nese work from amongst the thousa nds in the depot anel dropped it in my un~ suspecting lap, with the remark tha t I should do somcthing about it!

COMPASS

For a sai lor, the work certai nl y was one to do something about.

lts tit le was \Vu Pci Ch ih ( ~Vijj~ ), Notes on Mili ta ry Preparat ion; it was offered to the throne in 1628 and ils au thor was Mao Yua n~i.

Part of it conta ins combined charts and s3 iling~directions , wh ich accorcl ing to the experts are belicved to be based 011 mater ial and info rmation collected dur ing Cheng H o's voyages (see R./.L. POst vol. V No. 10 August 1958).

The sea durts as such cou ld not be used as wc do but the sail ing direct ions wrinen on the charts were easy to

follow. The usual text was : sail ing from A and se tting a course X, afte r Y watches, the ship makes B.

A watch was 2.4 hours alld there remained to be figured out how many miles it contai ned.

Now in another work on travels to foreig n coun tries we had founel th at " in measuring sea-tracks, 60 li constitu tcs a walch" anel that woulel mean 20 sea-miles. And , ho wever much we aelmired Cheng Ho and his voyages, wc could not poss ibly imagine his vessels avemging 8 knots for any length of time. So we set out w:::ll-know l1 tracks on a modern chart anel soon found that 10 sea-m iles for the watch was much nearer to lhc tru th.

The courses g iven presented another type ot d iflîculty: somc werc g ivcn lil one simple cycl ical character alld there could be no doubt about them. Thc 360 0 was div ided into 24 parts and indicated by a cyelical charter. Others were g iven in 2 characters, always two ncighbouring cyelical characters j that aroused my suspicions, for 110 sailor, and certa inly not a naviga tor of Cheng Ho's ab ili ty, would prescribe a course-to-sail within 30 0 !

Still other courses were indica ted in cyel ical characters preceded by the ord inary character Ulf1 (fJ), mea ning red or vermillion. H ere was a myste ry.

For a long time we went hunting through all that had been written on the Wu Pei Chih byeminent sillologues

So, having all the time till V-E Day, I cu l\ed the courses given throughout the Wu Pei Chih sail ing d irec­tions alld entercd them on a drawi ng of the cirele d ivided inlo 24 sections of 15 0 each. A lld then it dawned on me that the two-cha racter courses plus the tan-character courses were 5 0 sect ions of the 15 0 cyel ical d ivisions.

In due course I had to publish this phenomena l discovery In a learned journ:t! (T 'oung Pao 1944) and never hea rel of it again. Un:il last year, when a friend of mine d rew my attention to a book published by the Un:versity of Malaya Press, entitled "The Golden Khersonesc" by Paul Wheatley, in which the author w holly agreed \V i h my explanation and pri nted "the essentials of a nfte~nth­century Ch inese compass card (with Arabic numerals added (or reference)" .

Therc remains to be tolel th at I checked several sa iling directiolls on modern sea-charts. Natu ra lly thc courses given werc magnetic courses alld with the material at my disposal in those days I could not poss ibly nncl OUt thc exact var iat lon in the beginning of the XVth ceillu ry. But we had a va riatioll cha rt of that part of the worlel a nd si mply assumed that the annual increase or d ~crease ha:! been cons tant over the nve centu ries. So a ll estimated varialion was ngured out, applied to the course give.n and the " true" courses plotted on a modern sea chart. Amazingly cnough we safely navigated fr0111 Nank ing to the cas t coast of Africa and never hit a rock or all island! Or l1uybe not so amazing after all?
