Homecoming Carnival/Football gameAndrew Kunk X18

On October 17 The Apprentice School Student Association put on a fundraising carnival with proceeds to benefit “An

Achievable Dream”. The carnival had a variety of festivities for all ages. Activities included a rock climbing wall, jousting, a dunking booth and pie throwing. The dunk tank was very popular especially with the student body. Mr. Costa and Dr. Hughes were among many who graciously volunteered to sit in the cold as

students and visitors hit the bull’s eye target to soak them. This year’s Apprentice School Homecoming Game was played against the Wolverines .The Builders fought valiantly against the Wolverines rushing for 91 yards to Wesley’s 54 yards. During half time Latoya Mosley X43 was crowned the Homecoming Queen. Denise Smith was First Runner Up. The Queens court includes; Sharonda Holland X31, Nikita Wright X42, Artisha Skeeter

- Vince Lombardi

This year’s event was held at Newport News Park. Although the weather was less than perfect

the event was a big hit. Teams competed for bragging rights in a number of races. A score of volunteers, participants, and spectators were on hand to ensure the success of the event and raise much needed funds for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. A great time was had by all. A proceeds check will be presented to Khedive Shriners at the November 14th Oyster Bowl Football Game. Visit the Apprentice School student chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers(SME) website for additional photos and to see the video. http://www.nnapprentice.com/sme. If you are interested in participating or volunteering for 2010, e-mail [email protected] to be added to the distribution list. For questions, contact the POC Tracey A. Naumann (E06/E51) at (757) 619-4500.

2nd Annual Shipyard 5KPaul Norton X18

Although the day was a little cold and wet, the weather certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of the almost 500 hundred runners and volunteers who turned out for the Shipyard 5K. Around 80 Apprentices

participated in the race as well as many Apprentice School staff and faculty members. Winners of the race are as follows:

The race was part of "Health & Wellness Day" here at NGSB. After the race the runners/walkers were all able to see the wellness expo with such vendors as Bon Secours, Gold's Gym, HealthWaves. It was a great turnout, and next years will be even better.

What Quality Means to MeVan Gentry X33

Here are a few thoughts that come to my mind when I think of quality. Quality is the result of an unwavering commitment to achieve the best possible work even if no one ever knows who did the work.

Quality workmanship is just another way of expressing my personal integrity. Quality is the outcome of always doing the right thing at the right time and for the right reason. Quality is the way of life that says I will always do my best at everything I do inside of the shipyard or outside. Quality is not just what I do it is who I am.

14th Annual Trades DayVan Gentry X33

This year the Northrop Grumman family of Shipbuilders celebrated our 14th Annual Trades Day event. Once again it was held at the Apprentice Field. Despite the overcast weather conditions over

2950 employees and their family’s members were treated to a magnificent event. Among the family friendly activities was a picnic lunch that included barbecue, fried fish, beans and coleslaw. The children were treated to many activities that included a rock climbing wall and moon walk, air slide and face painting, baseball and football throwing booths. Additionally free thank you gifts included a water bottle and miniature football. The goal of the event is to say thank you to all the hard working men and women who put so much of themselves into building “Good Ships, Always Good Ships”. So to all those team members here at Northrop Grumman who say “I am a Shipbuilder” THANK YOU!!! We also need to say a Big Thank You to all the volunteers who worked to make this event a huge success. Your efforts were noticed and appreciated.

Letter From the editor Paul Norton X18

Greeting and salutations to my fellow apprentices, I would like to introduce myself as the new editor of the Builder Bulletin. My first order of business is to thank the previous editor Darlene Deerfield for the excellent job she has done as editor of the Bulletin and Chair of the Student Councils publications committee. Dar has worked tirelessly on the bulletin and raised the standard of excellence to a new level. My goal is to continue that standard. I would like to extend an invitation to all readers of the Builder Bulletin to submit ideas and comments for improvement of the Bulletin. Also I would like to encourage any apprentice who has anything noteworthy to be printed in the Bulletin to contact me. You can send any communication about the Builder Bulletin to [email protected].

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.- Robert Collier

2010 Student CouncilRob Heard X11

The new Apprentice School 2010 Executive Council is: President- Rodney Huffman X31/X84, Vice President- Phillip Foster X06, Treasurer- Ricky Jones X11, and Secretary- Kim Dalrymple X42.

Congratulations to the new Executive Council and thanks to all of the apprentices that came out to vote!

ASSA DelegatePaul Norton X18

THE ASSA STUDENT COUNCIL WANTS YOU! To inquire about becoming an apprentice delegate. The ASSA student council is looking for dedicated apprentices to be delegates to represent their trades. What

does a delegate do? Basically, a delegate attends meetings of the Student Council to vote on how apprentice dues are used, help plan, coordinate and run ASSA events, and keep other apprentices informed of upcoming events. In addition to that each apprentice delegate is assigned to one of the following committees: Yearbook, Communications, Publications, Activities, Class, Bylaws, Athletics or Public Relations. What are the requirements to be a delegate? An apprentice wishing to be a delegate must maintain good school and shop grades, have good attendance and approval from their respective craft instructor. Some of the events the ASSA Student council does every year is: trips by bus to professional and college sports games, homecoming carnival, Christmas dinner dance, concessions at Apprentice School home games, Spirit of Norfolk cruise, graduation, charity events and many other worthwhile endeavors. The ASSA Student Council works hard to provide events and services for apprentices. Leadership, responsibility, and follow through are just some of the things apprentices can learn by serving on the ASSA Student Council. If you are interested in getting involved please get with your craft instructor or delegate and ask how you can become a delegate.

Apprentice School Summer Blast Report

The August 15th Apprentice School Summer Blast was held at Harvey Field on the campus of Mariners Museum this year. On hand to host the event was our ASSA President Pat Nicholson and our Vise

President Kimberly Jordan. A special thank you is due to everyone who worked so hard to arrange this magnificent event. Despite the heat and humidity a great time was had by all who attended. Everyone enjoyed the Smokin’ Joe’s pork BBQ, hotdogs and hamburgers as well as many side dishes. Our children were treated to Apprentice School drinking cups filled with candy. Deserts included some delicious cookies. Among the highlights of the Summer Blast was the on site DJ who played all our favorite music. That great music prompted Kimberly Jordan and other ladies to break into dance. Among the other activities were horse shoes and “Corn Hole” (Corn Hole is a game much like a bean bag toss with a lot more details on scoring). And remember all this food and fun cost only $1 per person. Photos of all the fun are available on the ASSA web Site www.nnapprentice.com/assa/index.htm under Family Picnic Pictures.

A Scorching Good Time Van Gentry, X33
