Community Involvement Teen Shelter: We are in the beginning stages of funding a new teen

shelter in Salem, OR. Our goal is to have the shelter completed by end of year 2020. There is a real need for another teen shelter in the Salem-Keizer District. Currently, there is only 1 overnight shelter available between Portland and Albany for homeless minors. That home houses 10 minors. It is estimated that there are approximately 250 homeless minors in the Salem-Keizer School District. If you would like to donate, you can do so through United Way and have the funds earmarked for NAWIC Salem.

Habitat for Humanity: We are partnering with Habitat to volunteer for a monthly build day. We are shooting for the last Saturday of the month. The next build date is 11/23. If you would like to join us, please email one of us on the Stay Connected page and we will provide more information.

2What We Have Done

Fall ConferenceJuli Foscoli represented the Salem Chapter at this Pacific NW Regional Event that was held at the Eldorado Resort Hotel in Reno, NV on October 25-26. Here is what Juli had to say about the conference:

“Fall conference in Reno, Nevada was a fantastic time, as all the conferences are. We walked through a hotel renovation project job site at The Sands. We listened to educational speakers giving professional advice and tips to better ourselves in the Construction Industry. We learned what to do in the event of an Active Shooter from Homeland Security and the FBI. We heard from Reno’s City Councilor about projects in the big city. We helped the first-timers navigate NAWIC and connected with NAWIC members from as far as Guam, New York, and Florida and many others from the Pacific Northwest Region. We discussed potential new chapters in Montana, Bend, and Reno. And finally we discussed plans for future conferences: Spring Forum: April 23-25 of 2020 in Boise, Idaho; Annual Education Conference: August 12-15 of 2020 in Houston, Texas; and Fall Conference 2021 will be in Eugene, Oregon! (Dates to be determined when The Ducks football team release their schedule, as hotels reach capacity on those dates.)”

Who We AreMember Spotlight

1) Your Name – Susan Wood

2) Company – Salem Heating & Sheet Metal, Inc.

3) Years with your employer

I will have been at Salem Heating for 39 years this December 2019. I started at Salem Heating at a very young age. I love the family run business and the Gladow family have been very kind to me. They make me feel like part of the family. I am on my third generation of Bosses and I can say that each Boss has treated me with respect and they value my input into the company. I feel honored that I have always been part of the team.

4) If you could star in a movie, which one would it be and what actress would you be?

Twister and I would be Helen Hunt. I love the movie and she is a great actress!! I believe this was the last movie that I saw in the movie theater.

5) What is your vision for NAWIC - your chapter or PNW region or Nationally?

My vision for NAWIC is to make sure that we keep it alive and growing. I have been a member for 27 years and have met so many NAWIC members and some are still good friends today. I would love to have 30 members in our own Chapter. We need to reach out to the young women.

6) Considering all the styles of architecture (contemporary, baroque, prairie, gothic, queen anne, roman, etc.) which is your favorite and why?

My favorite style of Architecture would be the contemporary style. I like the modern look which has clean lines. I also like Baroque which is completely opposite of the contemporary style. I love the detail of the old buildings. So you might say that I appreciate the beauty of all styles of architecture!

7) What was your best chapter event this year?

Construction Career Day and Canstruction. They both were very exciting events and have a lot to offer in the community.
