A Message From the President:A Parent’s Reflection

June 2012

As we finish another school year, it is a time to reflect on where we are as an Alumni Association. We welcome another

group of graduating seniors into our ranks. Welcome to the Class of 2012!

This year my youngest child is part of the graduating class. This moment in time gives me the unique perspective to remember as a graduate, but also reflect as a parent. West Irondequoit is a family to which we all belong, and, just as our immediate family gives us the wings with which to fly, so too does our West Irondequoit family. We send our graduates out throughout the world to new experiences to continue to learn, and to share what they have learned; whether to colleges, careers or other adventures. While as both parent and students we feel the excitement of what is to come, the new door opening; we also endure the melancholy of feeling the other door closing.

Having been a West Irondequoit student, I remember teachers who touched my life, and friends who are still friends today. As a parent, I have enjoyed watching my children build those same relationships, and watching them grow to be an integral part of a loving community. I have had the opportunity to continue to live and grow in my comfort zone, as well as to further the progress of this world dear to my heart. The values taught to me, I have passed to my children. As alum, we hope to continue to enrich West Irondequoit with a tight community of neighbors who believe in the success we build together.

This brings us to the value of our Alumni Association as a tool to be able to come back through the door, not only to bring our new knowledge and life, but to also take comfort in our common roots and special memories. n

Each year, a new class of graduates joins our Alumni Association. Many of those graduates are following in the

footsteps of parents and grandparents who are also alumni of Irondequoit High School. In 2004, the West Irondequoit Alumni Association began to showcase this tradition of excellence by awarding the first Generations of Excellence scholarships.

To be eligible for this award, graduating seniors must have a parent or grandparent who is a graduate of Irondequoit High School. They must be a good student who worked hard in school and they must be planning to attend a two or four year college or a vocational school. Applicants must write an essay telling of their experience belonging to a family that has had two or more generations of students in West Irondequoit schools and must provide two letters of recommendation.

On May 29, Steve Arter Englert ’57 presented the ninth set of scholarships to our newest graduates. Elizabeth Amato, Maria Currie and Tim Ferriter each received a check for $100 and an engraved clock.

Elizabeth followed her father Joseph Amato ’83 and grandfather, also Joseph ’56 as well as her aunt Michele Amato Fisher ’76 and her uncle Michael Amato ’78. In her essay Elizabeth wrote, “…yes, my Aunt Michele was a cheerleader and participated in Sugar when Irondequoit first produced the musical. My Uncle Mike also participated in the musicals, and

excelled academically. My dad dove for the swim team and

Generations of Excellence — Years of Traditiondanced in all of his musicals.” Elizabeth has followed her family’s traditions and participated in the musical each of her four years as well as being a member of Tri-M. She is headed to the University of Dayton in the fall.

Maria followed the footsteps of her father John Currie ’75. “More than in any other school I have attended, teachers at IHS have been both nurturing and challenging. Coursework with them has improved my critical thinking, daring me to question accepted thought and theory.” Maria will attend Boston University to study Trumpet Performance.

Chris and Leslie Knapp Ferriter ’77 paved the way for their son Tim, as did his Aunt Linda Knapp Williams ’70, cousins Karen Weller Burns ’95 and Michael Burns ’96 and Kristin Weller Drader ’99 and Jeremy Drader ‘99 along with aunts and uncles David Ferriter ’76, Michael Ferriter ’79, Sharon Ferriter Perticone ’83 and Matthew Ferriter ’85. “My parents…often speak of the good times, friends and teachers they had at IHS. They continue to hang out with other IHS graduates and their closest friends went to IHS. There is a strong sense of community not only at IHS but in West Irondequoit.” Tim is off to SUNY New Paltz in the fall to study engineering.

The West Irondequoit Alumni Association continues to collect used cell phones as a fundraisingcampaign. Proceeds benefit our Generations of Excellence scholarship fund. Cell phones are shipped to Pace Butler Corp, which pays the association for them. “It’s a simple fundraiser that is working well for us,” says WIAA president Leslie Ferriter.

Inactive phones (any age or make) may be dropped off at any school or at the District Office located at 321 List Avenue. Call (585) 336-3067 with any questions.

One day this past January an envelope arrived in our office from

a woman named Trudy living in Bath, NY. Inside the envelope

was an IHS class ring from 1965 with a note from Trudy telling

us that she found the ring in a sale box at an auction and she

thought that someone would appreciate having it back.

Through the initials inside the ring, our database and the 1965

graduation program we were able to track down the ring’s

owner, Dave Kinsella. Dave now lives in South Carolina and

shared an amazing story with us. In 1966, Dave’s car was towed

after an accident in the Keuka Lake area and when he went to

retrieve it a couple of days later, he discovered that his class

ring had been taken from his glove box. He resigned himself to the fact that he would never see it again.

Because of the thoughtfulness of a complete stranger, he now has his ring back, almost 46 years later! n

When most people hear, “5-second rule,” they wonder what dropped to the floor.

In the Rochester a capella world, however, 5-Second Rule brings other thoughts

to mind.

Founded in 2008 by 2001 IHS graduate Cristin Sick Mancuso and friends, 5-Second

Rule is a local a capella group made up of six talented singers. After involvement

in music in high school and college, these women wanted music to continue in

their lives. Cristin’s vocal musical journey included Sweet 16 and Women’s Show

Choir in Irondequoit, Call4backup at Nazareth, and, now, 5-Second Rule. Not only

do the members of 5-Second Rule sing for fun and for their own enjoyment, but also for the enjoyment their music brings to others.

In addition to singing at local coffeehouses, farm markets and various private engagements, 5-Second Rule also lends their voice

to charitable causes such as Relay for Life, Buddy Walk and other fundraisers. In addition to Cristin, group members include Bitsy

DeLorme, Leia Jones, Corinne Paull, Denise Anderson and Nichole Sears. While their backgrounds and career paths vary, their

voices join in tight harmony in their leisure time. With one CD already produced, 5-Second Rule hopes to create a second CD of

lullabies to keep the music flowing. Find 5-Second Rule at http://5secondrulemusic.yolasite.com/. n

Stop by the athletic field area on central campus in West

Irondequoit and you can’t help but notice the new wind turbine

installed in the summer of 2011. Funded through a grant from the

West Irondequoit Foundation, the turbine harnesses wind power

and turns it into electricity. The WindTamer was purchased from

Arista Power and is tied into the power grid via an underground

cable.

Adjacent to the turbine is a solar light pole. The pole was largely

funded and constructed by the high school Alternative Energy

Education Club. Completely self-contained, the light pole captures

solar energy using a panel atop the pole. Energy is stored in two

batteries mounted near the base of the pole. Participants in the

club are learning about new sources of energy and working to

educate their peers.

District science and technology classes, as well as younger

students from our primary schools, visit the new Alternative

Energy Classroom to learn about sources of green energy. n

A self-contained solar lamp lights the walkway adjacent to the Gordon Allen Field and concession stand.

Next event – a birthday party

The 50th Reunion for the IHS class of 1961 took place on July 15-16, 2011, and was attended by close to 125 classmates out

of our original 365. The weather was perfect which added to the enjoyment by everyone, many who traveled from long distances, from California, New Mexico, Texas, Florida and even Alberta, Canada. The festivities began on Friday with a catered picnic at Camp Eastman where “A Taste of Rochester” was served. On Saturday morning many showed up for our interesting and informative tour of the high school led by Steve Arter (IHS ’57). That evening we all gathered at the beautiful Rochester Yacht Club for hors d’oeuvres and a delicious dinner followed by dancing to many old-time favorites.

Because of the enthusiasm from everyone who attended our 50th, it was decided to plan a 70th Birthday Celebration during the summer of 2013. We will be posting the information on Facebook when we have the details. Please contact Joe Calabrese at [email protected] with any ideas and your availability to help plan it.

The WEST IRONDEQUOIT FOUNDATION (WIF) is a not-for-profit organization established in 1987 to receive gifts, bequests and donations in order to provide funding to enhance the educational programs of the West Irondequoit Central School District (WICSD). It raises funds to underwrite teacher-initiated grants for projects, equipment and programs that cannot be supported by the district’s annual operating budget. Through a strong annual campaign and a variety of fundraising activities, the WIF has granted more than a half of a million dollars to WICSD since it first awarded grants in 1990. In 2003, the Foundation undertook its largest fundraising effort to date. The highly successful Windows Project, a unique public art project in which artists transformed vintage wood windows removed from IHS during renovations into works of art, raised more than $77,000 for WIF’s Endowment Fund. The WIF is led by a volunteer board of directors whose energies are deeply rooted in an enduring pride and abiding commitment to WICSD. They rely entirely on the support of alumni, businesses and the community to carry out the Foundation’s endeavors in support of educational excellence.

HOMECOMING

Some of our alumni have elected to receive their copy of the annual newsletter electronically. If you would find this option

more convenient, just send an e-mail to our office at [email protected].

If you received a copy of the newsletter in the mail, you may notice that it is not addressed to a specific person. This is on

the advice of our mailhouse, for the following reasons:

• Wesendonenewslettertoeachhouseholdwherealumnireside.Forexample,ifthereisamom,dadandtheir

college age children and they all attended IHS and live at the same address, we only send one

newsletter to their home. If you would like additional copies, please contact our office.

• Ifwesendanewsletteraddressedtoaspecificpersonandthepersonhas

moved, because this mailing of 12,000 newsletters is sent using our bulk

mail permit, the post office discards the newsletter. If we send it to

“our friends at,” then no matter who lives there, it is delivered. You would

be surprised at the number of phone calls we receive from folks who tell us

that our alum has moved. This helps us maintain our database.

Tom Volk ’71 – On the International Stage

Anyone who attended music department concerts or

drama department musicals at IHS from 1967-71 will remember the contributions of Tom Volk. He played just about every instrument imaginable and conducted some theatrical productions. Given his love of music Tom obtained a music degree from Fredonia and went on to Cleveland Institute of Music where he met his wife. They then

moved to Graz, Austria to work in the symphony. He has worked for several different musical organizations throughout Europe including in Hanover, Stuttgart and Seitz. He was rehearsal director at the opera house in Nice, France where he met musicians like Yehudi Meduin and Wolfgang Wagner.

Currently, Tom and a partner own das Theater Pädagogisches-Zentrum Zeitz, a theatrical company that produces shows and runs classes in theatrics. The school systems in Germany are different than America and by about middle school age children

are separated into either a college track or laborer track. Music and theater are not a part of either system so their organization fills a gap in the needs of the community. They have awakened the idea that a well rounded education includes music and drama and that the arts aid children in the learning of other subjects. They produced PInkel Stadt (Urinetown) an acclaimed satirical musical along with shows like Miss Saigon and Cats. One thing Tom noted is that students who attend their organization lose the class distinction that pervades the educational system in Germany. He also works with a group named Kolorit which produces many types of musical performances from opera to contemporary review. Tom looks forward to growing the theatrical school and aiding schools in developing programs to educate children and other citizens in the area.

Thinking back on his time at IHS Tom remembers fondly going to Abbott’s, working with teachers like Messers. Bollinger and Badger, friends such as Jeff Rehbach. He has two sons and is now a grandfather. He comes back to Rochester periodically to see his mom but you will have much better luck running into him in Germany!

Alumni Spotlight Shines on Class of 1985

Michael NolanBy Victoria Nolan ‘10

He is highly ambitious and self-motivated. He has many talents for building and is a masterful boat driver and

apple-tree planter, as well as dedicated family man and world-traveler. He now plans to take on building an entire town center! Who is the man behind the backhoe, you might ask? Well it’s my dad and Irondequoit High School class of 1985 member, Michael Nolan of course!

Mike grew up directly next door to Seneca School, which he attended alongside his five siblings, Michelle, Lisa, Jeannine, John, and Julie. They moved onto Iroquois, Dake, and Irondequoit High School.

Still a teenager, Mike moved to Florida with his best friend, Jim Taylor, where he met his wife Wendy while working at the Sun-Sentinel newspaper. They were married in 1988 and moved back to Irondequoit in 1992.

Mike, who has always been interested in cars and motorcycles, went to work at Bob Johnson Chevrolet in 1992 until 2000 in the Business Department. During this time, Mike and Wendy had two children, myself and my brother Nicholas. We are both graduates of Irondequoit High School, classes of 2010 and 2012.

In 2000 Mike bought Spex Precision Machine, a machine shop

which has become enormously successful under his watch. The company grew so large that he eventually had to build a larger shop to accommodate the many employees and machines he needed to continue to grow his business. The shop occupies the area formerly known as Silver Stadium.

In 2010, Mike decided to expand our home as well, and built a new house for our family on King’s Highway, near the town hall.

Mike enjoys activities at our family’s cottage on Silver Lake, including water skiing, cook-outs, and firework displays. He spends his free time with our family dog, Bear, and working on odd projects around the house.

Mike’s newest project is called “I-Square,” which began as the town’s vision for a more beautiful town center, located at the intersection of Cooper Road and Titus Avenue. Mike is making this vision a reality. He bought his first I-Square property in 2011, and presented his plan to Irondequoit through Facebook on April 21, 2011. So far, his plans have been met with acceptance and praise, and we continue to cheer him on to success!

IHS is truly lucky to have had an alum who is so dedicated to his town, and determined to make the area a better place for future graduates! Go I-Square! Go Mike! n

We are one of the great, vibrant, close-knit classes of Irondequoit High. Our class is the only one to have spent

two years at the “old” school at Titus & Cooper--squeaky stairs, tilted floors, mice in the lockers---and two years at the “new” high school on Cooper Road--cost $1,000,000 to build--a huge sum in 1950! A contest to re-name the new high school fell flat-it’s still Irondequoit. Classmates came from Reuben Dake, Seneca, Hosea Rogers, Durand-Eastman, and Ridgewood grammar schools (Eastridge wasn’t built yet), and some parochial schools. The first exchange student, from Germany, is in our class. We were proud to be Irondequoit Indians, a noble name we never thought derogatory then or now.

Girls wore pearl necklaces. Marijuana and cocaine were unheard of. We went to drive-in movies, rode bikes, swam at Windsor Beach or the bay outlet, played miniature golf at Whispering Pines, got a hot dog and milkshake at Don & Bobs, went to IHS football, basketball, and baseball games. Some boys were All-County, or honorable mention in the major sports. Title IX for girls didn’t exist then. You could get a summer job, despite no Wegmans, McDonald’s, Home Depot, Starbucks, nor scores of drug stores and pizza parlors in the area.

The junior prom (Deep Sea Dream), and senior ball were attended by couples. Corsages were about $3, a tux wasn’t required, there were no limos, and dress gowns were inexpensive. I think the trend now is to go to the dance in groups--a great idea, because no one is excluded. One hundred thirty-four students graduated in 1952. We knew every classmate by first name. We’re down to a little over a hundred now. Seventeen of us still live in Irondequoit, with 49 in the area, or in New York. Sixteen went south to Florida; 22 live in nineteen states, Germany, Thailand, and Israel. After sixty years, only three are unaccounted for.

We received a head start from excellent teachers. No one was allowed to flunk Hazel LaLonde’s geometry class. Butler Shaw taught us how to drive. Big Red, John Dodge, Katherine Reichel, Harry Wagner, our advisors Otto Hahn and Isabel Averil, Jin Alessi, etc.,--they’re all gone now, except our librarian, Helen Rice. She’s over a 100 years old now, living in town.

This September we will hold our 60th reunion, preceded by a 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 45th, 46th (the previous year must have been a good one), 50th, 52nd (another special), and 55th. Our German alumnus plans to be here. In our younger days we were doctors, nurses, teachers, Air Force officers, publishers (remember the Irondequoit Shopper?), engineers, stay-at-home moms, Volunteer Fire Dept. Commissioners, a champion water skier, salesmen, managers, a reverend, entrepreneurs, Irondequoit D.P.W. Foreman, a CIA operative, a renowned artist, and one multi-millionaire. Also, one maybe arsonist; one of our mates (now deceased) was the last person seen in the old high school before it burnt to the ground on the night of March 26, 1951.

Many of us males were drafted into the Armed Forces for at least two years of active duty, either after high school or college, courtesy of Universal Military Training. There were few exceptions-teachers and doctors being two. George Mc Avoy Park, at Winton & Empire is named after the head of the Draft Board. We’re in our late seventies now, retired, widows, widowers, grandparents, and a few great grandparents. Bald heads and white hair predominate. We’ve put on weight. Our interests are in grandkids, senior discounts, pains, IRA’s, recent surgeries, Medicare, prescription drug costs, Social Security, and assisted living opportunities. With a lifetime of memories, we remain:

Fireman, athlete, coach, Kodak employee, WICSD

employee, Universi ty o f Rochester employee... dancer? Chris Harvey is a man of many talents, all of which keep him connected to his hometown.

Chris has lived in West Irondequoit his whole life. He is a 1978 graduate of IHS.

While at IHS he played football and lacrosse. In his freshman year of high school teacher Pat D’Ambrosia was short a few male dancers for that year’s musical production of Fiddler on the Roof. She recruited Chris and several other football players including Brud Harvey, John Martynec and Bob Clark to dance and lift the girls. In his senior year, Chris participated in the musical Bells are Ringing. That year he shared the stage with other athletes such as Mike Amato, Sam DiJune and Steve Strnisha. Chris also recalls the football team learning the cheerleading routine “Sweet Georgia Brown,” and performing it at the fall pep rally in his junior and senior year. Footwork is important in football, and these guys certainly had footwork! Sophomore year Chris started playing lacrosse. He recalls an extremely snowy day when even the parking lots were not plowed. The whole team was hoping Coach Ernie Lisi would cancel practice, but instead he made the team run to the lake and back. Chris was also president of the Varsity Club in his senior year, and co-chair of Blue and Gold his sophomore year.

After high school Chris worked at Kodak for 23 years. In 2005 he took a job with the West Irondequoit Central School District

as Labor Foreman and this year he started working as a Skilled Trades Supervisor at University of Rochester.

Chris has always been very involved with the West Irondequoit community. He has been a volunteer fireman with the St. Paul Blvd. Fire Association since 1979. He had the honor of taking his father’s badge number upon his dad’s retirement. In 1981 Chris became an EMT with the department. He has also held many positions with the fire department including Assistant Chief, Chief and is presently Commissioner. If you drive by the St. Paul Exempts on Thomas Ave. and see the guys playing softball, look near the backstop for Chris – he is their starting catcher.

Chris’ love of lacrosse started at IHS but still continues. He has been a volunteer coach for Irondequoit Youth Lacrosse. He also volunteered as a coach for the IHS Girl’s Varsity Lacrosse team. This led to a paid position as assistant coach.

Not only has Chris been involved with the IHS lacrosse team, but he also volunteers his time at other extracurricular activities. He volunteered as assistant coach for the Nordic Ski team for two seasons. He has also been to Camp Cutler with the Rogers/Iroquois students for Outdoor Education where he put his training as an EMT to work.

Chris has been married to Sheila for 27 years. They have two children: Rachael (IHS class of 2006) and Bridget (IHS class of 2009). To quote Chris “West Irondequoit is where my heart is – I bleed blue and gold.” Our thanks to Chris, his love of this community, and his willingness to get involved. n
