A Message from the President:
Greetings Fellow Zontians and Friends of Zonta, Early November is typically the time of the year when people in the U.S, start to think about the
upcoming Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the meal that will be served on Thanksgiving and
football! The excitement grows as the guest list and menu are prepared. My thoughts are similar –
will my nephew invite me to his house, who else will attend and what can I bring? Since joining
Zonta in 2011, I’ve also become more aware of the numerous shelters and organizations in the
Harrisburg area that will serve Thanksgiving meals to men, women and children who do not have a
family or are temporarily living at a shelter.
November is a busy month for the members of the Zonta Club as well as we prepare for the “16 Days of Activism
Against Gender Violence” that begin on November 25 and end on December 10, Human Rights Day. Our Club’s
December 4 Rally at the Main Rotunda of the State Capitol will focus on the problem of Human Trafficking. I hope to
see you all there.
And last but definitely not the least of my November observations, I want to say “THANK YOU” to every member of the
Zonta Club of Harrisburg-Hershey and dedicate this newsletter to you! Club members working together was the reason
we accomplished so much during our 2016-2017 Zonta Year. It is also the reason we were honored and awarded four
Achievement Awards at the Zonta International District Three Conference.

If you are not a member of the Zonta Club of Harrisburg-Hershey and are receiving this newsletter, please consider
attending one of our meetings held on the second Thursday of the month from September – June. Throughout the
year, Club members raise funds to support Shalom House in Harrisburg, provide scholarships to local high school and
college women and support Zonta International’s humanitarian projects around the world. Plan now to spend an
evening with us and learn what Zonta is all about and how you can become part of this thriving Club.
Happy Thanksgiving!

November Program: Aiyana Ehrman and Michelle Kime from “Imagine Goods”
We are Aiyana Ehrman and Michelle Kime—two ordinary
women seeing extraordinary things. We are Imagine
Goods, and we partner with vulnerable and marginalized
people around the world to make products that, in many
cases, give them the first fair wages they've ever
received.
You might call us "accidental entrepreneurs". . . we never really intended to start a business. We had been working as a non-profit in Cambodia since 2006, and slowly came to the realization that this was the most empowering project we saw.
Around 90% of our artisans are survivors of human trafficking and they are the reason that Imagine Goods
exists. By giving people the opportunity to work, we give them hope. By empowering survivors with
employment, we give them the power to change their own lives.
We are a social enterprise, and that means that we do things a bit differently than most companies. People
matter to us way more than the bottom line, and we try to take a close look at the entire chain of people who
are involved in making our products. Are they earning a living wage (enough to meet their basic needs)? Are
they being empowered? That’s why we call ourselves a “Sustainable Supply Co” because we believe that
when we buy a product, the cost of the item should be able to sustain every person connected to it with a
living wage.
We will bring napkin sets, wristlets, scarves, and aprons to sell at the Nov. 9 meeting!

U.N. Buzz from Deb Crum, U.N. Committee Chair
On Tuesday, October 24th, we celebrated “United Nations Day”!
Zonta International enjoys a longstanding partnership with the United Nations, so we as Zontians consider
October 24th a day of special note and celebration. Excerpts below From the ZI Website Presentation “Zonta
and the United Nations” provide some of the history of the UN/Zonta relationship.
As an international women’s organization, founded in 1919, Zonta has always seen itself on the international
stage, promoting the status of women through its service and advocacy. As the organization has evolved, so
has its work internationally. Becoming involved with the United Nations after the Second World War,
Zontians have worked tirelessly to promote justice and universal respect for human rights and freedoms,
high ethics, and goodwill and understanding among the peoples of the worlds, to assure world peace.
The purposes of the United Nations as expressed by their Charter, shows a parallel structure of the two
organizations. While peace and security are the primary functions of the UN, the struggle for human rights
and understanding, as well as the economic, social, cultural and humanitarian goals of the UN, are all familiar
goals to Zontians worldwide.
It is clear that Zonta’s incorporation and bylaws are inextricably linked with those of the UN, and for that
reason Zonta was one of the first organizations to enter into consultative status. Additionally, Past
International President (or PIP) Helvi Sipila brought us into the forefront of UN work. As a diplomat and
representative of the Finnish government at the United Nations Headquarters, which were at that time in
Vienna, Sipila developed Zonta into a world call actor. Her leadership as the Secretary General of the UN
First World Conference held in Mexico City in 1975 again brought Zonta onto the world stage as she shared
her knowledge and passion with the organization.
UNIFEM, the United Nation’s Development Fund for Women, was established in 1975 and within 10 years
Zonta had set up its Foundation, awarding over $400,000 US to five grants at UNIFEM. When UNIFEM merged
into UN Women in 2011, the Foundation grants continued and the relationship today is that Zonta
International, through its Foundation and approved by the Zonta Convention, is the largest contributor to UN
Women of any non-governmental organization, providing more funding for UN Women and the Trust Fund to
Eliminate Violence against Women than some governments. Zonta has contributed to the development
agenda, and to research on women at the UN, and continues with its cooperation through participation in the
Women’s Empowerment Programme - a joint venture between UN Women and the UN Global Compact to
improve women’s employment opportunities and advancement.
Here are some key UN facts;
• Established in 1945 • Originally 51 Member States; now 193 • Stands for Peace, Diplomacy, resolution of social issues such as poverty, hunger, illiteracy, elimination
of disease, human rights, protection. While other organizations of the United Nations make recommendations to member states, only the Security Council has the power to make decisions that member states are then obligated to implement under the Charter.
SHALOM HOUSE HAPPENINGS – Suzanne Gale, Past. President Shalom House Coordinator

Mark your calendars now!
Zonta Club of Harrisburg-Hershey Annual Holiday Wreath Sale
Your support of the Christmas wreath sale in the last 5 years helped us raise $18,687 which we donated in support of
our mission – helping Shalom House, funding two local scholarships for outstanding young women and funding the
programs of Zonta International. We can still accept orders in early November so reach out to your family, friends and
business associates to see if they would like to purchase a wreath.
The 22” handcrafted wreath comes from the woods of New England, assembled from natural balsam fir evergreens.
Each wreath is double faced, skillfully decorated with three clusters of hard pine cones, a waterproof velvet bow and
embedded with clusters of red holly berries, all to add beauty and significance to the holiday season.
All wreaths are individually bagged and boxed for ease of handling and protection. They make great gifts or fabulous
additions to your outside decorating plans.
While the wreath is delivered with everything attached except the bow, customers love to embellish it to suit their own
decorating style - the wreath is sturdy and adaptable for many different decorations!
Prices:
22” wreath in box - $30.00 per wreath
28” display easel - $4.00 per easel
Over the door hanger (brass or black) - $4.00 per hanger (please specify choice)
Schedule:
Orders should be placed by November 3, 2017 with pick up the week of Thanksgiving. Payment should be made to
Zonta Club of Harrisburg-Hershey at the time of order. Members of the Zonta Club of Harrisburg-Hershey will
