A MESSAGE FROM THE MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN

It is my pleasure to present the new members of our Society; they number 96. There were 74 members dropped from our rolls, producing a net gain of 22 members for a total membership of 2146. Admittedly, this represents little growth from the 1985 members of 1990; steady new membership is being offset by the attrition of those we dropped or who resigned and the inevitable deaths. While this latter trend will likely continue, our challenge is to increase recruitment efforts. The Society continues its healthy mix with 26% women, which is similar to the past four years. A modest drop in non-physician new members was offset by an increase in physician members from academia, government agencies and industry.

I am impressed at the quality of our new members, many of which have already demonstrated consider- able productivity in our discipline and will no doubt help create and establish our future. Besides the qual- ity, we continue as a balanced Society representing our many faces.

It is a pleasure to serve as your membership chair- man. I promise to expand my efforts regarding new membership and challenge you to do the same.
