More accolades for Outrigger Fiji’s Bebe Spa SanctuaryBy Donna Parkin

The accolades continue to roll in for Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort’s beautiful Bebe Spa Sanctuary with a recent win in the Pevonia Awards International Best Spa Design category. In addition, Bebe therapist Shivanjani Lata was a finalist in the

Best Therapist of the Year category, a title she won at the Australasian Spa and Wellness Association Awards in 2014. Earlier in the year Bebe Spa was awarded a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, listed by TripAdvisor as ‘The most captivating Fiji resort spa.’ Bebe Spa overlooks Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort from Vakalomalagi Hill with stunning views across a reef-fringed lagoon. It contains eight open-air treatment rooms, a Bure ni Loloma (House of Love) - wedding chapel and a post- and pre-treatment relaxation lounge and Kalokalo Bar that offers spectacular views of the best sunsets in the South Pacific.

Four of the treatment rooms contain luxurious sunken spa baths on balconies which overlook the reef, adding another level of luxury to treatments. Pronounced Behm-beh, Bebe is a Fijian word meaning butterfly. All treatments practiced at Bebe are based on giving guests a sense of renewal where upon leaving the sanctuary, guests feel the soothing effects of being transformed into a butterfly. Spa manager Praveena Dewan said that the spa menu focuses on uniting ancient Fijian therapies and beauty rituals with the world-renowned effectiveness of the luxury Pevonia product. “These awards recognise our traditionally designed spa which transcends through to the spa menu and the dedication of our highly trained team and their efforts to deliver the ultimate spa experience to our guests,” she said.

Castaway Island, Fiji Resort — first to train in gender sensitivityBy Donna Parkin

Castaway Island, Fiji Resort in the Mamanuca Islands is the first corporate organisation in the country to participate in training by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) to help its key male workers understand the issues of gender, violence against women, human rights and the role of men in eliminating gender-based violence. Nine of the resort’s male workers, including the general manager and human resources manager, successfully completed a three-day male advocacy for women’s human rights training. The training was facilitated at the resort by FWCC Coordinator Shamima Ali and counsellor-advocate Lavenia Tuitabu.Castaway Island, Fiji Resort General Manager Steven Andrews said they were prompted to participate in the training after reading about the spate of cases involving violence against women over the past few months in Fiji.

“The training has greatly helped us to understand women better and also recognise our own roles as men in helping eliminate violence against women.”

The men who underwent training will also play a lead role in their own villages and communities to promote the elimination of violence against women and girls. Shamima Ali said, “There’s a recognition that discrimination and violence against women has a huge impact on women’s productivity and none more so than in the hospitality industry, which projects an image of happiness through the ‘bula’ smile. However, many times for women, behind that smile is a

host of ongoing violence, trauma and abuse.” She said that Castaway Island, Fiji Resort’s management and staff need to be commended for recognising the importance of this training. “When companies recognise the importance of understanding an issue such as violence against women, training workshops like this have more of an impact. Castaway has set an example for other tourism and corporate organisations.”

Outrigger Mauritius Beach Resort Our place. Our Planet. Our Responsibility.

By Sandra Mussard

Saturday 17th September 2016 Outrigger Mauritius Beach Resort hosts and guests joined with the community in a Clean Up the World event, one of the world’s largest and most successful community-led global environment campaigns, now celebrated in over 130 countries. Our beach-cleaning activity was an event for a cleaner, greener and safer Mauritius. The theme of this year’s Clean Up the World held 16th-18th September 2016, was “Our place. Our Planet. Our Responsibility.” Thus, this beach-cleaning day was geared toward raising awareness and encouraging global support for the safeguarding of our environment. It was also in line with our commitment to routinely hold OZONE activities. We are proud to do our part to protect Mother Earth.

O Ke Kai Series at the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach ResortBy Luana Maitland

Friends of Hokule‘a & Hawai‘iloa (FHH) returned for their third O Ke Kai Series for 2016 and they invited the Pacific University football team to join them. Though the team had scheduled sessions going on throughout the day, some team members made their way to hear the history of Hawaiian canoe building and stories of Hokule‘a’s Worldwide Voyage. Also there representing the Polynesian Voyaging Society was one of Hokule‘a’s navigators, Keahi Omai, who sailed on the legs from Australia to Bali and from Mauritius to South Africa. Keahi couldn’t stop talking about how well he and the crew were taken care of by the hosts of Outrigger Mauritius Beach Resort. Fresh taro (root vegetable) and ulu (breadfruit) were introduced to our guests, as it was commonly seen aboard the voyaging canoe during her sail.

Save the date for the final O Ke Kai Series for 2016: Saturday, Nov. 12, 9 a.m. – noon.

Mahalo to the Friends of Hokule‘a & Hawaiiloa, Polynesian Voyaging Society, Lynn Cook and musician Kawika Kahiapo for a great day of sharing stories and music with our visitors, guests and hosts; and to Ho‘okuaaina for the poi (Polynesian staple), taro and ulu (below).

Outrigger shares aloha during XTERRA Championships in Utah!By Kathy Hansberry

The Snowbasin Resort in Ogden, Utah, hosted two championship events in one weekend. Ogden was transformed into XTERRA Title Town for the inaugural XTERRA Pan America Championship off-road triathlon on Saturday, Sept. 17, and the XTERRA Train Run National Championship on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016. The two events brought in roughly 1,500 of the nation’s very best amateurs, professional triathletes and trail runners, along with their families, to Snowbasin Resort to battle for the title of XTERRA Champion. As the presenting sponsor, Outrigger Hotels and Resorts had prime visibility a giant inflatable Outrigger arch and activations at the opening festivities in downtown Ogden at the Ogden’s Amphitheater Park and at the finish line at Snowbasin Resort. The Outrigger hospitality pavilion at the finish line provided a place of comfort and warmth for spectators waiting for loved ones to cross the finish line. Outrigger’s Signature Experience was showcased with free hot coffee, cocoa and make-your-own “Kukui Kupee” (kukui bracelet). For your viewing pleasure, below are video highlights of both events. Also, as XTERRA has partnered with Amazon, these videos will be uploaded and offered through Amazon TV.

genuineness – you see the pride and feel the love that they bring to every task, from warm greetings of aloha to the extra special touches that please particular guests, which they have a knack for remembering. That, I think, is an authentic expression of the aloha spirit, and it helps me understand why guests keep returning year after year. Laughter, fun and food seem to be hallmarks of the housekeeping department. I was privileged to attend some of the team luncheons held during the week and found the atmosphere delightful and the food fantastic. Thank you, housekeepers, for sharing your culture with me and for everything you do for Outrigger Resorts. You’ve earned my respect and admiration, and you are all top-notch in my book, just as you are in Dr. Kelley’s. Happy International Housekeepers Week!
