A Message from President Mike Dickey

These dog days of 2016 seem slow and sultry, but our club is taking advantage of

the pause to consider who we are and where we want to go as an organization.

President-elect Eric has asked you all to complete a survey that solicits your likes,

dislikes and hopes for this club, in an effort to make Kiwanis the best it can be.

Have you filled out yours yet? Part of what makes this club so special is the

diversity of backgrounds and ideas among our members, and giving us your

insights is as important as showing up to serve pancakes (but don’t pick one over

the other—we need you for both!). Further, Eric has taken the time to ask for your

inputs regarding where you feel called to serve. Give that one some prayerful

consideration, and make a commitment to get more involved as the weather cools

and the calendar fills with volunteer opportunities. In the meantime, enjoy your

summer, and we’ll see you at the next meeting.

How important is your vote?

In 1649, one vote caused

Charles I of England to be

executed.

In 1845, one vote brought

Texas into the union.

In 1876, one vote gave

Rutherford B. Hayes the

Presidency of the US.

In 1923, one vote gave Adolph

Hitler leadership of the Nazi

Party.

In 1988, Carlos Valdes

defeated Miguel De Grandy by

a single vote in Florida’s

second primary and went on to

win a seat in the State House of

Representatives.

School begins on August 18th. Let’s help our SLP Clubs jumpstart the new year!

Kiwanis College

The first Kiwanis motto, “We Build,”

was adopted in 1920. It was proposed

by Roe Fulkerson, first editor of the

Kiwanis Magazine. “God inspired me

to write those two words—We Build,”

Fulkerson said. “I am prouder of them

than any other accomplishment in my

life.” That accomplishment served as

the Kiwanis motto for 85 years. A

bronze bust of Mr. Fulkerson is on

display at the international office in

Indianapolis. 15 years ago, after

careful consideration, it was changed

to “Serving the Children of the

World” to better define our purpose.

What is Kiwanis………………?

“Kiwanis is a global organization

of volunteers dedicated to

improving the world one child

and one community at a time”

Leaders Leaving a Legacy for the Children

In 2000, the presidential election

was decided by less than 600

votes.

In 2000, the Mayor for Panama

City Beach was decided by one

vote.

In 2004, a Springfield

Commissioner race was decided

by one vote.

In 2006, a Bay County School

Board race was decided by two

votes.

Get out and vote on August 30th as

you might be the deciding factor.

Free Invitation Kiwanis makes

communities better

through more than 6

million hours of service

each year. Every member

represents 36 hours that

improve lives every year.

Think about what could

happen if we all shared our

Kiwanis stories—and

inspired others to become

a part of our club. To add a

little incentive, the board

has waived the $50 new

member fee until Sept. 30th

so invite someone to join

today.

Day for Kids America does not have an

official day to celebrate its

children, so the Boys &

Girls Club is working to

change that by

establishing the 3rd

Saturday in September

each year as Boys & Girls

Clubs Day for Kids.

That’s Sept. 17th and we’ll

be helping serve 1500

youngsters hot dogs &

hamburgers at this free

event. Your help is

needed, and we are also

providing the funds to

purchase the food.
