Life Thoughts in the Church Year One Gospel-motivated voice For Life said, “No one wants anabortion as she wants an ice cream cone or a new car. She wants an abortion as ananimal, caught in a trap, wants to gnaw off its own leg.”
Poverty and pain, disability and disease, abuse and abandonment take away a lot. But incarnate, crucified, and risen-againLord Jesus guarantees suffering cannot take everything. Even amid afflictions we overcome these evils not with death but with His joy and hope, courage and compassion(Romans
12:21).
Stewardship Matt. 16:26 – “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life?” He who
dies with the most toys … is dead. But the one who trusts in the Lord, even though he dies, yet shall he live. We live out our trust in the Lord by faithfully fulfilling the roles God has givenus to play in the
home, church, and society as loving, generous people. Those who don’t know the Lord are afraid to be generous because they think that what they give away is lost to them. But we who know the Lord
know that the things of this world become true blessings when they are used for God’s Kingdom.
Are You a Christian? by Rev. Steve Scharnell, Associate Pastor

Jer 15:15-21; Rom 12:9-21; Matt 16:21-28
The theme for this sermon arose from:
Matthew 16:23b, “For you are not setting your
mind on the things of God, but on things of man.”
and
Matthew 16:26, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?”
What those are referring to are the things of

Putting things into context.
After Jesus tells the disciples what He was going to do, Peter has a response.
Matthew 16:22b, “Far be it from you Lord, this
shall never happen to you.”
Why does Jesus react so harshly to this?
The things of this world are temporary. The things
of God’s heavenly kingdom are eternal.
Who is the ruler of this world?
Who is the ruler of God’s kingdom?
We are in a ___________________ battle.
Ephesians 6:12, “For we do not wrestle against
flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the
authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil
in the heavenly places.”
Do the marks of a true Christian make us a
Christian?
Romans 12:9, “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.”
Your homework is to meditate on our Epistle lesson
Romans 12:9-21.
Think about and pray on the marks of a Christian.
What areas are you pretty good at and lead by
example? What areas do you need to work on?

THE THIRTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
Jeremiah 15:15–21 O LORD, you know; remember me and visit me, and take vengeance for me on my persecutors. In your forbearance take me not away; know that for your sake I bear reproach. Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and
the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O LORD, God of hosts. I did not sit in the company of revelers, nor did I rejoice; I sat alone, because your hand was upon me, for you had filled me with indignation. Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Will you be to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail? Therefore thus says the LORD: “If you return, I will restore you, and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall be as my mouth. They shall turn to you, but you shall not turn to them. And I will make you to this people a
fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, declares the LORD. I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.”.
Romans 12:9–21 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be conceited. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is
honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
St. Matthew 16:21–28 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of
God, but on the things of man.” Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. Truly, I say to you, there
are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
